Chapter 164: A pledge of loyalty
"Sister, I will go first." Kiki volunteered eagerly. Chi Lian could see that the girl’s entire caprice had changed. She was no longer gloomy and hopeless. She appeared to be entirely full of hope for the future.
"First have some tea, let one of your brothers talk." She shut Kiki’s offer down. Kiki was willing to follow her; her brother’s attitudes were yet to be determined. She needed to hear directly from the other involved parties. Especially the buff older man, from all signs, he was the leader of the group. "I am sure Kiki has filled you in on the proposal I made. I am extending the same proposal to you all; I will take you in, fund you, protect you, arm you and defend you. That is if you offer me your loyalty wholeheartedly." Her voice was euphonious, not because she was offering them shelter and relief but because it was magnetic and charming. Even the devil could be tempted to sign a deal with her.
The brothers in front of her were certainly tempted. If she were a loan shark, they would have signed for the loan already and put up all their valuables as collateral.
The older man took a sip of tea, frowned and added milk to it. Chi Lian patiently watched his actions. Kiki too impatiently watched the actions of her senior and huffed her cheeks angrily. She was probably wondering why her senior was taking too long to talk.
Finally, he opened his mouth and asked, "What exactly would be our duties?"
"Anything I ask of you." Chi Lian declared blatantly. Anything meant it did not matter how gross, dangerous or ridiculous her requests were. If she wanted it done, they were to do it without question.
"What if you ask us to kill for you?" He asked dead serious. It was a ridiculous question given the fact that she met Kiki after the girl tried to kill the shifter. And the fact that they intended to take on the Aoi organization which would be a kill or be killed mission most likely. This meant his question was probably a test of sorts. She would not hide her intentions; they needed to know what was expected of them before getting into bed with her.
"Then you kill for me." She replied, dead serious as well. She looked at him challengingly, waiting to see his reaction.
"Can you really save him?" he asked, his voice resigned.
It seemed like they had made up their minds to follow her before coming. This meet up was to see her face and determine if she could be trusted.
"Yes," She reiterated, "I would not lie about something as big as that. Look where you are right now, I am sure that you have figured out that I own this building. I own all the companies here and I have some connections to the military and some powerful people. Following me does not mean you will hide in the shadows and assassinate for me day and night. I intend to train and educate you. I will give you jobs and accommodation. But you will live double lives; you will be spies where you are placed. You may have to kill to protect our organization but never innocent lives. You will be good people unless push comes to shove so don’t worry about compromising your morals too much. Just concentrate on accomplishing the tasks I assign to you."
After hearing her explanation, the older man was relieved. The relief was slightly visible on his face. He was probably the current leader of the group. It must have been challenging for him providing for them and protecting them. If she had to guess his identity, he was the principal of the orphanage that chose to go into hiding with the children.
To her shock, the older man got onto his knees and bowed in submission. "I old tiger promise to follow your orders and never deviate from them for the rest of my life." He vowed.
"Eh, you don’t really have to kneel." She quickly asked him to stand up.
The four men on the table and Kiki did the same thing and took the same vow.
"Why are you doing this?" she asked. In her opinion kneeling was extravagance.
"You don’t know what you have done for us." Old tiger cried softly. "Some of the children under my care are still young, I barely have the resources to educate, feed and clothe them all while funding the training of the older ones to investigate the Aoi organization. If you are willing to take the burden from me, then how can I not fall to my knees?" he said submissively.
Chi Lian was certainly impressed by old tiger. He had weighed the pros and cons of choosing to follow her and figured they were benefitting more out of this deal than she was.
"Host, someone in this room is trying to hack into the phoenix media computers." T4 spoke up for the first time all day. The system was surprisingly silent and calm today. If the virtual screen was not working she would have assumed that the system was gone.
She carefully observed the five men, only one of them was looking at phone intently. It was the youngest of the group. She assumed that he was not older than twenty and not younger than seventeen. If he was the hacker then he must be the younger brother Kiki mentioned.
"Is it him?" she asked T4?
"The source of the hack is definitely him, I must say he is quite skilled, too bad his opponent is me. I wonder what the value of his mental strength is." T4 mused. "Host am I allowed to scan them for mental strength?"
"Permission granted." She also needed to know how smart they were in order to know which assignments to assign them where they could maximize their potential.
While T4 scanned them, she looked at the hacker and said, "Young boy, you are skilled but my system is not cheap. You can’t hack it, but I commend you for the effort, with your skills I am sure you will serve me well."
The young boy was so shocked that the phone in his hands dropped to the floor.
"Hey, code what are you trying to do? This is our boss’s company, don’t mess around." Kiki shouted at the boy.
Chi Lian wanted to ask why his name was code. Did these people have no knack for naming? Who was naming them?
Blushing red, code replied, "I just wanted to see if the boss’s system needed strengthening."
"Oh, then continue." Kiki even put her thumb up and praised him.
"It’s very secure." Code admitted. "I would love to meet the designer of the system and trade some ideas." He looked at Chi Lian hopefully.
"Uhm, not now." she replied. How was she supposed to introduce him to a system?
"I told you I am the best." T4 bragged.
"Yes, you are the best." She praised the system. Every once in a while it was good to praise the arrogant system when it did something right.
"By the way host, you have a new mission, I think you will love this one." T4 happily told her.
