Chapter 153: An adorable assassin.
Chapter 153: An adorable assassin.
Watching each other like prey, in a tension filled room the two made no move for a while. Each trying to assess what the other would do next.
For Chi Lian, if the woman opposite her did anything but touch that mask, her gun was coming out.
"Are you taking the mask off or not? You have no hope of beating me and if you insist on engaging me in another fight only one of us is walking out of this room alive. I for one have the means to get away with murder, do you?" she asked the woman assuredly. Her voice was ringing nothing but truth and her demeanor was calm. Only a fool would doubt her words.
The woman quickly pulled a sheet from the bed and wrung it around her hands like a rope.
Chi Lian scoffed and touched her back pocket. "Suit yourself." She said and pointed a gun at the woman. "Now, between my gun and your sheet whose weapon do you think works faster?" she asked cockily. "Last chance; take your mask off so that we can talk."
If the situation was tense before, now it was volatile. The air was charged with anxiety because none of them knew what the other would do next. As the seconds went by, so did the intensity of that anxiety.
Chi Lian’s finger was on the trigger of her smart gun; her eyes followed the clenched movements of her opponent around the sheet. Slowly, she watched the hands holding the sheet loosen and drop it.
"Don’t shoot." A soft voice said. "I give up." The woman raised her hands up in surrender.
Still pointing her gun at her, "Great," Chi Lian responded. "But I am sure you know that I cannot simply take you at your word. We are still strangers after all. Now kindly empty your pockets and take off your mask."
Reluctantly, the woman emptied her pockets, taking out her phone, two receipts from a supermarket and a key. Then she followed that up by taking off her mask.
"My God! How old are you?" Chi Lian exclaimed immediately upon seeing the woman’s face. She was no woman, she was a girl. A pretty girl with baby fat on her cheeks, if it were not for the fact that she had been trying to kill her earlier, she would be pinching and kissing the girl’s face already.
"I am nineteen." The girl responded testily. "Don’t look at me like that." She said in an angry voice.
"Ha-ha-ha, you are so adorable." Chi Lian laughed, "Is that what you kill your opponents with, your adorableness?" she mocked the girl.
"Hey, stop laughing at me, I am very fierce, let’s fight again, and I will kill you." The girl exploded and lunged at her forgetting about the gun Chi Lian was holding.
The situation would be dangerous at any other time if Chi Lian was not confident about having the upper hand. "Calm down." She laughed as she dodged the girl. "I am really not laughing at you." She lied.
The cat and mouse game lasted for about a minute before the girl gave up and sat on the bed while pouting. "Are you going to kill me now?" she asked tentatively. She appeared to be resigned to her fate, as if she had always known that her end would come soon.
"Not if you tell me why and who sent you to kill me." Chi Lian sighed before pulling out a chair from the side and sitting across from her. "You are young; other girls your age are having fun at the university, planning their future lives and dating. Why are you a killer?"
"Hmph," the girl scoffed, "Things like that are for those who stood a chance, I never stood a chance from the beginning. In this game called life, I was a loser from the beginning." Her eyes were misty; a sorrowful haze was glazed over them. Chi Lian did not have to push hard to know that she had a story and whatever it was, it was probably full of horrors.
"Host, she tried to kill you, before you decide to save her, at least first find out why."
Right, she remembered, the most important reason for being here was not to save her, it was to save herself and protect her family.
"Why did you try to kill me?" she asked the girl seriously.
The girl looked at her and said, "I don’t know who you are, why would I try to kill you?"
"You are joking, right?" Chi Lian responded.
"No, I am sure. No killer ever forgets the face of their target. I have never seen your face before." She insisted.
Chi Lian was beginning to get angry. Was this girl going to feign ignorance?
"You," she said through gritted teeth, "In city B last week, you shot the shifter and then tried to take me out. Are you going to pretend that you don’t recall? Your bullet went right past my head, it almost grazed me."
"You." The girl said in shock.
"Yes, me." Chi Lian retorted. "Now that you remember, tell me why and who sent you?"
"Hmph, you were not my target. You just got in my way. I was there to kill the shifter in case he failed his mission and ended up being captured."
Chi Lian relaxed a little bit. She was deeply relieved to know that she was not a target of some nefarious assassination plot so soon when she was still so weak. But this did not mean that she was not on the radar of some hidden organization because of the dancing robots as the minister said. She still needed to know who the girl worked for.
"Who do you work for?" she asked.
"Why should I tell you?" the girl asked nonchalantly, "If you are going to kill me, do it already." She closed her eyes.
"Aaah, this stubborn brat." She thought. Was she protecting the organization she worked for or herself?
"Host, we should recruit her. She has skills and loyalty. She doesn’t seem to be happy with her current employers." T4 suggested.
"I am not going to kill you." She told the girl. "I want to poach you, why don’t you come and work for me?" she asked.
The girl opened her eyes and looked at her. "Huh, are you trying to recruit me?" she asked unsurely.
"Yes." Chi Lian told her bluntly, "I came here with a plan to kill you or save you. Since you were not trying to kill me then I might as well save you."
The girl seemed to consider her offer for a while; her eyes lit up with hope and expectation for the future but then quickly dimmed.
"I don’t want to live as a killer for the rest of my life." She said tentatively.
"Then I have no use for you." Chi Lian said.
