Chapter 585: Modern soul eaters
"The humans are not going anywhere for the next foreseeable future and nobody is going to die within the next eight hours, so let’s see where the soul has gone."
Severus put a paw on her leg and teleported them away because he knew that she would be reluctant to leave especially after she had seen a child. Harming a child, was in her opinion the most diabolical act anyone could do.
As her pregnancy progressed, the sentiment grew even more. She couldn’t stand to see even a single child in pain. The Blue star now had many large beautiful homes for orphaned children and out of her own pocket, she supported many of them, adding to what the royal family could provide. There was also a new immigration policy favoring widows and orphans with no age limit. A child as young as five could apply for citizenship and it would be granted to them immediately.
If the choice was left to her, she was going to save the humans first and Severus would not allow that to happen because their duty was to the souls and the dead.
They appeared inside another building, the one which was attached to the genetics lab. This looked like a factory with all the equipment which was churning and making whistle like sounds. Humans were working in it. They wore gas masks on their heads, their hands and feet were also masked in black thick gloves.
Scarlet could smell souls, many souls in pain and the scent of evil. It was most concentrated here as if the floors had been mopped with it.
She masked her presence even more and raised her body, so that she could have an aerial view of the large factory.
"What in the world is this place?" she asked.
"I don’t know, but I don’t like it." Severus answered.
She could not see any physical raw ingredients being processed but when they got to the end of the assembly line, small fragile transparent capsules were being packed away.
Severus sniffed the air close to the capsules and he shook his head. He was uncertain if he was smelling the right thing because he had never seen anything quite like this.
His head turned to Scarlet and he asked, "Are you smelling the same thing?"
"Souls." she answered in a thin voice.
It was airy and whispery, barely escaping her mouth. Slowly, her mind put a few pieces together and came to the conclusion that this factory was somehow processing souls and turning them into those capsules.
"But how?" Severus asked. The look in his eyes was similar to hers__, horrified.
Scarlet could not answer his question because she was without an explanation. This concept was new to her. Apparently, the soul eaters had modernized their ways of eating souls...or swallowing them.
"Should we tell someone?" Severus asked her anxiously.
Scarlet did not even ponder on the question before shaking her head. They needed more answers like where the capsules were going to be transported to and who the customers were. More importantly, they needed to know who was running the operation.
Soul eaters hiding in dark corners of grave yards, mortuaries , hospitals, temples and battle grounds, she could understand but soul eaters with a soul processing factory, she couldn’t.
Moreover, they were not waiting for the humans to die natural deaths to collect. They were somehow connected to the lab which was killing humans with their experiments. Either the two were connected or the soul eaters had found a crack and they were exploiting it because no soul escaped that lab. They all ended up here.
Information was what she needed and she wanted it urgently. So, she teleported back to the testing lab and caused all the lights in the room to blow up with her energy.
While the researchers scrambled, she plugged a device into their main terminal and Alex hacked in, downloading all of the information on the computers. It took two minutes for that happen and Scarlet continued causing chaos until Alex confirmed that he had finished.
"Let’s go." Severus told her.
Scarlet was not willing to go and leave the people here behind, especially the boy. She looked at his small body which was strapped down to a bed and machines.
Written by hand on the transparent door were the words precognition, followed by four question marks.
"I can’t leave him...them." she said.
"Even if you take them, they will simply bring more. We should find out where they are holding the others otherwise, you could save this boy and they will bring in one even younger than him. What happens then?" Severus replied. "Saving these few will alert them and they will move their base of operations and keep going. Let’s be smart about this."
Reluctantly, Scarlet looked away from the boy and she clenched her hands. In a moment of rage, feeling helpless and hating it, she opened her mouth and a loud scream escaped her mouth.
The power in the scream caused the building to tremble and the lights on the rest of the floors exploded at the same time. Even the windows shattered as if an explosion had been set off.
Severus put a paw on her leg and teleported them out of the genetics lab immediately. If he didn’t Scarlet would have brought the entire building crushing down. She had not even recognized the extent to which her power had grown.
He teleported them to a world he had been to before on a mission with warrior reapers. It was an abandoned desert world with no humans hence no danger would be brought to anyone as long as Scarlet continued screaming like a banshee.
He forgot about the animals which dwelled in this world that went scrambling for cover as the sand rose up, forming a sand storm that swept up everything in it’s path.
"Let it out." Severus sighed and told her.
He sat down and watched her scream for close to an hour. When she stopped, she was heaving, pale and exhausted. She swayed and fell to the ground, with tears in her eyes.
Severus shifted and moved closer to her. He watched her cry and used his paw to catch her tears.
"The true tears of a high level grim reaper are also powerful as a weapon of war. I told you, stop wasting them without reason."
She slapped his paw away and the tears spilled. When they touched the sand, it exploded.
"Aah...wastage, what a wastage." Severus winced and complained.
Those tears could do some damage to a demon, soul eater, monster or any other unnatural creature. In large quantities, they could melt something down completely, like acid.
"Are you all cried out?" he brought his paw back to catch the rest of her tears.
She wiped her eyes with her hand and nodded. Crying or screaming like she had done was not the solution. She needed to find the soul eaters who owned that factory, take them out and then save those humans.
If she failed to find them, then those researchers would be the ones to pay the price for what they had done. She didn’t care if it wasn’t her place to punish them, someone had to do something.
