Chapter 584: Between the humans and the soul?

"Aren’t you too arrogant for someone outnumbered and in possible impending danger?" The woman asked her.

Scarlet chuckled and crossed her arms across her chest. She was a grim reaper, so yes, she was arrogant. She had nothing to fear about three humans who she would be as easy as eating pie to deal with.

"Are you selling the creatures or not?" she asked confidently. "If no, then I will be on my way. Don’t ask, don’t tell.....it’s the black market policy, right?"

She was only interested in the Jelly fish because they were of different varieties. Unlike the ones in her old world, these ones came in different colors and one had beady black eyes.

"Four hundred fifty thousand star coins." The woman said.

Scarlet had another account which Alex managed for purchases such as this one. Anything she didn’t want traced back to her, she used it.

"Star coins, energy stones, gold. What’s your choice of currency?"

"Energy stones, void gems or cryptocurrency." The woman answered.

Scarlet had many energy stones, she collected them from mines and other worlds. In fact, the stash from Nordem was enough to power a thousand space ships or run an entire city for one hundred years.

"Energy stones." Scarlet said.

She touched her storage bracelet and extracted a storage pod and four hundred fifty energy stones. The woman brought out a thin tube like device and she scanned it over the energy stones.

She looked at one of the men and said, "Authentic and high quality."

The nine jelly fish were transferred into her pod and she kept it away.

"Here," the woman handed a physical leaflet. "Everything we know about the floating bug and it’s habits, you know too."

Scarlet turned and left the shop, well aware of the eyes that were on her back. In a place like this, greed was inevitable. Her making a payment in energy stones and owning one of the latest storage pods on the market had drawn their interest.

If they were connected to the free traders like renegades, pirates and smugglers then they were probably sharing an image of her. She would be trailed and later on robbed, if she had no security.

She had taken less than ten steps when someone started following her. Scarlet chuckled and waved her hand. A water tank outside another shop burst and created some chaos. She laughed as everything about her changed. Her black cloak turned red and Severus’s breed changed. He turned into a white chihuahua.

The one who had been sent to trail her was confused, and he was looking around from side to side and left to right.

"Amateurs." she mumbled.

"You cheated." Severus told her.

"And I plan to cheat some more." She said.

She waved her hand and became invisible to the humans so that she could speed up this search. Moving faster than the wind, she followed the dark energy and Severus’s directions until she came to a building that sat right in the middle of the black street.

"It’s always in the center." she muttered.

People that did bad things never hid away as deeply as expected. Most stayed out in the open, begging to be seen and loudly screaming their bad deeds to those who cared to listen.

"Kostya genetics lab." she read.

This was not the only genetics research company or lab in the black street. People probably didn’t give it a second look because it didn’t stand out.

"Alex, find every bit of available information on this lab."

She looked around casually, observed the tightly guarded entrance to the lab. There was a lot of security in the form of human guards clad in white and black exosuits, armed robots, drones and cameras at many different angles. She would be hesitant if she was approaching as a human but she had no plans of going in the human way so she teleported herself inside.

From one floor to another, she dashed through at the speed of light until she came to the second upper floor where the smell was most concentrated. It smelled like a soul eater was inhabiting the place.

The place was like a modern day partitioned office if only the offices were transparent rooms in which humans were being chained up and experimented on.

She counted about thirty three rooms and each was occupied by one or two people that were doing different things. Initially, it seemed so simple, like moving objects around with the mind which was not alarming since everyone that trained their mental strength could do this easily but the further along she looked around, the more alarming it became. They were testing abilities like telepathy, pyrokinesis, psychoportation and other abilities.

This lab was testing the abilities of humans to use the power of the mind to manipulate, sense and create things beyond the normal physical realm.

They would not be the first ones to do so but something was off in this lab.

The humans being used as test subjects appeared to be in pain and Scarlet didn’t think they were there willingly since a few were strapped down. Most had devices implanted in their brains and doctors or researchers were seriously scribbling down observations.

"The cruelty of humans towards their fellow humans will never cease to amaze me." Severus said.

He said it because some of the doctors were eating and laughing, totally insensitive to the pain of the test subjects.

"That one is about to die in five seconds." Severus told her.

She had just turned her head when the one Severus said was about to die exploded, guts and blood splashed all over transparent walls.

Scarlet was surprised and she was taken back by the rather violent nature of the death but the researchers in the room, not so much.

The other test subjects became scared and some started to cry. Such death was common in this lab, everyday at least three people died this way.

There were those who didn’t react and they had a dead look in their eyes. Today it was that one, tomorrow it would be them. Their destiny could not be changed.

One of the researchers, in an angry voice said, "Tch! another useless one has died. Bring a replacement quickly."

Scarlet was about to open her soul gourd and collect the soul when it was pulled downwards as if was being sucked into a vacuum.

"What the?" She whispered in shock.

That was not the only thing to surprise her because the replacement which was brought was a teenager. A young boy that was struggling weakly against the two burly masked men who dragged him in.

"These cruel bastards!!" Scarlet muttered. Anger filled her soul and her eyes turned green. These cruel people didn’t deserve to live, they should just die.

Surely, the world would be a better place without them.

"It is not your decision to make and it’s not why we are here. We need to find out where the soul went and where they are getting star dust from. It’s in the blood of the human that just died. If I had to take a guess, the rest of them too, they are using star dust somehow to give the humans extra abilities which is deadly."

"I need to help the boy." she responded.

"No, you need to help the soul." Severus told her in a more determined voice than before.

Now she found herself torn between the humans and the soul, who needed urgent help?
