Chapter 583: A visit to the black market

After the engagement, time passed like the snapping of a finger and Markay was crowned. The status of the Su’s was elevated and they returned to the capital in glory, as Scarlet predicted. One of the engagement gifts given to them was land, over seven hundred acres of unused land in the capital. It was a former battle ground where blood of both mutated beasts and mecha warriors had spilled. That was where chose to set up a horse racing track, a mall, a food court and a smaller castle, in comparison to the ones on the Blue star.

The next one month was a busy one, and so was the one which followed with all of them working overtime to handle life between two planets.

Esong, the mecha warriors and the scientists who were to enter the space crack were also making preparations to go on their secret mission.

During this time the Su’s were faced with one major problem, relatives of the Su family who run around using Carolyn’s new status to oppress commoners and commit other types of crimes.

Soon, Scarlet was sure that the empress would step in and deal with them. But other than that, life was mundane and busy. Almost nothing was out of the ordinary except for the fact that Scarlet was wearing more loose clothing to cover up the small bulge on her lower belly. It was amazing that Esong had noticed it since they were still intimate. It was quite bewildering how he remained blind to the very obvious change in her body when she was naked.

Was he playing dumb or simply ignorant?

This evening, she was taking a walk through the shadier parts of the capital, the old Scarlet’s stomping grounds. Severus had reported and an unusual smell of evil energy coming from somewhere within these streets.

She was a level seven reaper now, and she had the ability to change her appearance. Still, she covered her herself from head to toe in a black hood. She was not alone in this, many other people that were walking these alleys known as black street did the same.

Some even took it as far as wearing masks to hide their identities. But given the nature of the business that took place in this shadowy underbelly of the empire, she understood why.

You had mercenaries, bounty hunters, mutated beast hunters. These ones didn’t operate in guilds and colored outside the law.

You had information sellers and you could buy the most intimate information on someone at a high price from them. Scarlet would not be surprised if some of her information was somewhere in one of these buildings.

"We are close." Severus said.

He had shrunk himself into puppy form and she was carrying him in her arms. It was not unusual to see someone carrying an animal or beast in these streets. In the black streets, all sorts of mutated beasts were sold for food, experimentation or other purposes.

"How does this place exist in an empire which has strict laws?" Severus asked her.

She looked up at the very tall buildings which made her feel like a dwarf and replied, "Because half of the shops here are owned by nobles. Even the royal family has a couple of buildings in this street. As long as you are not caught doing something illegal, there is no evidence hence no reason for arrest."

The black street was the home of the black market in physical form. It was what one would consider a necessary evil in many circles. A lot of things could be acquired here that one would not get elsewhere. A lot of medicines had been develop through the use of ingredients from this place. Even some of the weapons mecha warriors carried had ties to this place.

It was common knowledge that they often held auctions selling the most bizarre things in the universe from different planets. There was a rumor that they sold humans and alien species too but those were unsubstantiated rumors.

Getting an invitation to said auctions was also a very difficult thing to accomplish. They were invite only, information was sent through encrypted channels using coded messages. The RGB had tried hard to crack down on these auctions but their locations shifted constantly and never had a set time or date. It was also unknown who the mastermind behind them was but rumor had it that it was someone powerful and noble.

Someone touched her cloak and she stepped to the side. Scarlet avoided bumping into anyone, and kept to herself as she moved, ignoring the calls inviting her to purchase things like spices, genetic mutation serums, ON3 and other items that were prohibited in the empire.

She and Severus were searching for only one thing, the source of evil energy so they walked slowly, peering into different shops where shady looking characters smiled and invited them in but they kept moving.

As she was moving, her feet stopped because she saw something that caught her eye.

"Oh!" she exclaimed.

Her feet carried her into a ground floor shop with no name, just like most of the shops here. It had only a number above the door and a hologram which provided a direct link to the shop online.

"Welcome, how can I help you?" A woman, dressed in a pink robe with a white mask and hood looked at Scarlet and asked.

Scarlet pointed to a hologram display of what she was certain was a jelly fish. This was a species she did not think about when she was purchasing things in the underworld. She had brought over edible animals, no useless ones or predators. That was until Tridon brought over dangerous water creatures.

"Do you have that?" she asked.

The woman looked at it and nodded.

"How many and how much?" Scarlet asked.

"Nine, fifty thousand each." The woman answered.

Scarlet scoffed. "So freaking expensive. Why the high price? What makes them special?"

The woman shrugged. "That’s the price the researchers pay so it’s the price we charge."

"Where do you get your supply?" Scarlet asked her.

The woman’s body tensed and her hand moved down. She brought out an energy gun, the kind ordinary citizens were allowed to have for protection.

She also pointed to a virtual green screen behind Scarlet on the wall. "All of my licenses are up to date. I don’t sell anything illegal here so if you are from the RGB, do your job and leave."

"I am not from the RGB." Scarlet told her.

The woman trailed a finger over the gun slowly and asked, "Then what are you doing? Don’t you know the rules of the black street? No unnecessary questions, just make your purchase and go."

Two bulk sized men showed up in the shop and planted themselves on opposing sides of the entrance. If Scarlet made even one suspicious move, she would not be walking out of here alive.

If she did walk out alive, she would have a few broken bones and less fortune than she walked in with.

"Relax, I am asking because I want more than nine. I have a friend who knows a noble that collects beautiful rare species. That thing...what is called?" Scarlet asked.

Her body language stayed the same, exuding confidence like she was not worried at all about the two men or the gun.
