Chapter 550: The history of the gods.
The wine glass slipped and fell out of Lythia’s hands. The surprise in her eyes so vivid like water in a transparent crystal glass. This news hit her like a monster truck crushing into a fragile human body.
"I.....Wait.....you." she stammered as the words rebellion crystallized and settled in her great mind.
"Do you need time to process this because we can pick up from here tomorrow?" Wisdom told her.
Lythia clenched her fists as anger came in and took the place of that shock. How could the reapers turn against them? They were gods!! Without them, the reapers would not even be immortal or exist.
"Let me guess, you are now thinking how dare the creatures we created defy us." Wisdom said, monotonously.
He did not present it in the exact way Lythia was thinking but it was all the same because that was it.
"It’s useless for you to be angry because you gods set the tone for this to happen." Wisdom looked up and said, "Oh wait, I am a god too." He laughed and said, "But, I do not involve myself in your wars of dominance so I am not of the ones who stirred the waters until it came down to you being abhorred by the national born reapers."
Lythia grabbed Wisdom’s arm with strength, her normally calm eyes brewing a storm.
"We are the gods." she said strongly.
Wisdom easily tossed her hand away and replied disdainfully, "And the natural born reapers are your children or descendants of your children. Tell me sister, what have you done for them in the last cycles. All you have done is take and allow other gods to take from them. Can you blame them for wanting to take back what was taken from them?"
"You are blaming us." Lythia said, surprise in her voice. "You are one of us. You should side with us."
"I am wisdom, I side with the facts." he answered.
Lythia could not believe the ridiculousness of the situation so she calmed herself down first and took a seat. If they were going to be accused of being disgraceful to their nature or of betraying the reapers, she wanted to know everything. As the guardian of the reapers, she was supposed to be fair and just in her judgements.
"Tell me what we did, give me your facts." she told him.
Wisdom sat down slowly and said, "Okay, let’s begin with the war of numbers.
Apo was insecure because the grim reapers were reproducing more than life angels. Life and death raged, war broke out, a percentage of reapers lost their powers and then for peace to reign the gods decided, we decided that grim reapers should have one child every millennium."
"It was a wise decision that ended the war." Lythia said as a matter of fact.
"But drastically cut the number of reapers by half. Those who lost their powers had to sleep in your rejuvenation waters and those who remained behind could not reproduce rapidly enough to fill in the gaps." Wisdom reminded her.
He poured more wine into his glass and went on. "Every war has it’s consequences of course. With the limited number of reapers, the reaping of souls slowed down. It affected all the gods of course and it was decided that no reaper could go to sleep for ten thousand cycles.
They had to reap souls, hunt demons, capture escaped monsters and work day and night in different worlds without taking a break which they were entitled to every one or two hundred years."
"The situation was complicated back then." Lythia told him.
"For you or for the reapers?" Wisdom asked her.
"For us all." she answered righteously. "It was all hands on deck, the reapers were not the only ones working tirelessly. Every realm had it’s troubles. The gods of strife and pestilence were particularly active in those years."
"I am just giving you the facts, I am not accusing you of anything. If you want to defend yourself, wait until I am done." Wisdom told her.
Lythia’s upper lip trembled and she huffed. Wisdom was not so cute anymore. He was not on their side at all. He could claim to be sharing facts but she could tell from his voice that he did not approve of the decisions they had made.
"In that time, reapers reproduced with humans a lot of more because the one child a millennium policy only affected reapers who were married to other reapers. It was the number of spiritual children Apo wanted to cut down. Human children, not so much."
"Okay, that was not our fault, the reapers are the ones who started turning human children spiritual because they wanted to keep them alive." Lythia said vehemently in defense of herself and the gods.
Wisdom glared at her with two raised eyebrows so Lythia clamped her mouth shut. But, her hands tapped her thighs as she fought the urge to explain.
"It was not all reapers, for your information." He told her. "A small number of reapers made that decision but as always the gods felt the need to step in. It was decided that the human children would be killed then and forever.
Monsters were sent from every realm, they ripped those children apart, tearing them out of the arms of their mothers. They stalked pregnant female reapers and waited for the moment when they delivered to strike at their babies. And you, the three deities who were supposed to help your reapers just watched."
Lythia clapped her hands once and covered her mouth. She took a deep breath as she couldn’t hold it in anymore and blurted out, "It was a decision taken to protect the humans. We felt the pain of every child that died. Our hands were tied down by the rest of the gods. Do you think we enjoyed watching that massacre?"
She banged her chest as she explained and truly, pain filled her eyes as those memories which had long been buried resurfaced.
Wisdom laughed dryly and asked her, "Did it not cross your minds even once that the reapers would resent you for not fighting?
The good ones who were not involved in the terrible acts of feeding souls to their children to make them immortal would have gladly gone to war to protect their innocent children. They would have fought to the last core of their souls for what was right.
But, you all folded easily and allowed all the reapers to pay the price for what a small group did. How many grim reapers do you think resent the humans now after you all chose the humans over them?
You can sit here in your anger, raise your voice and proclaim that we are the gods but what kind of gods are we? Our history is written in many ignorable injustices and that is the fact. And we have not even come to the worst one yet."
