Chapter 551: How the soul was split.
"It’s unfair." Lythia longed with every divine cell in her body to scream out loud. A few mistakes had been made here and there but they could have settled it by talking things out.
A rebellion to overthrow the gods was too much. And who was going to rule after the gods were removed? It would be another god of course otherwise the universe would be in ruins. There was surely another god involved in the plot.
"You are thinking that it’s unfair but I can assure you that what’s unfair is what happened to the reapers even after all this. They worked day and night to fill in the gaps as you all wanted but then a war between the three, Tridon, Apo and death over something so frivolous related to the human children again resulted in another war.
The underworld was at a disadvantage at the time because the number of reapers had dwindled. Naturally, you were at a disadvantage and Apo took advantage of it to successfully curse the reapers. They lost their ability to reproduce suddenly."
"That was not our fault." Lythia was quick to blurt out.
"Not you yes, but another deity." Wisdom said. "Most of the natural born male reapers had dedicated themselves to reaping, putting aside their plans to have their own children and settle down until that ten thousand cycle came to an end and they could take a long fairly earned break. But just when it was ending, the curse happened.
Out of nowhere, they were suddenly told even the one thing which brought them joy would be taken away completely. Zero children, no families, just a long existence of working like slaves day in, day out and a whole lot of loneliness.
Suddenly they were lost and angry. That anger had to go somewhere and it was channeled towards the cause of their plight of course, the gods. Nyx convinced most of them to go to sleep and he promised to wake them when he had come up with a solution. He and a handful of fellow generals stayed behind to search for that solution.
Somewhere along the way he stumbled onto the god of hatred, Dagos and as you know, our brother hates us all, humans and gods alike. He would like nothing more than to see us all fall."
"I can’t believe what I am hearing." Lythia mumbled.
She had a feeling that another god was involved but Dagos had not even been on the list of top three.
"I guess Dagos advised Nyx to get rid of us all." she said.
"Correct." Wisdom answered. "But Nyx wasn’t fully sold on that plan because Dagos could not be trusted. He seeks power, not justice. He seeks nothing more than to spread hate in every world.
So, Nyx came to me in search of a different plan. If he could fix the problem of the reapers, there would be no need for a rebellion. He wanted to know if there was a way for reapers to use human bodies to start their own families, not as human and reaper but human and human."
Lythia smiled as she came to understand what wisdom was saying. If the children were fully human then they could not be killed.
"Aah, so he wanted a way for reapers to use human bodies as hosts. Technically, the child would be born of a human and another human so it could not be killed." she vocalized.
Just like the boy, Justin, she thought.
"The only way for it to work was for a reaper to plant part of their soul in a human child, nurture it and live a full human life. When the human dies, the soul can be retrieved and returned to the reaper." Wisdom shook his head and added, "I was not sure myself if it would work. It took me many months to come up with that plan."
"I think it worked." Lythia mumbled.
It was the only thing that could explain what Esong Wu was. But, she suddenly realized, if wisdom was hiding out here then something had to have gone wrong with the plan.
"What happened?" she asked.
"Two things went wrong with the plan. You see, while I was coming up with the plan, Nyx disguised himself and paid a visit to the realm of life. All those months, he lived there doing who knows what. And two, Dagos became impatient, he found out that Nyx had been to see me so he figured that he was shopping around for another partner. Then Dagos had one of his minions whisper the now abandoned rebellion plan to Apo. They made it seem as if it was about to happen and Apo’s realm would be the first to go down.
On the day Nyx returned from the realm of life and we started studying the ritual of splitting his soul together, Apo showed up out of the blue. He was filled with rage, screaming something about Nyx stealing from him.
He saw our plans and came up with one of his own on the spot. He used his power to thrust a part of Nyx’s soul into the body of a human child that was not supposed to live for more than three days. He then aimed one of his life draining blasts at Nyx, intending to erase him forever.
Something just came over me and I grabbed what was left of Nyx and we teleported here to the underworld."
"Wait, that doesn’t make sense." Lythia stopped him briefly, cocked her head and scratched her cheek.
"What?" he asked her.
She lowered her hand and asked him, "Why would Apo thrust a part of Nyx’s soul into a dying child? Wouldn’t it have been easier to just erase Nyx completely and then face us in yet another war."
Lythia sighed because the word war was now shaming to say.
"He wanted Nyx to die with regret. A part of his soul was inside a human as he planned but he would not be there to nurture it or know if the crazy plan succeeded.
That or he wanted Nyx to die presuming that he would live on in a human at least but not knowing that even the human would die soon.
What greater punishment is there than that one? Humans die with useless hope or regrets all the time. That was the fate he wanted for Nyx until I stepped in and intervened."
Lythia shook her head and said in a low whispery voice, "But you are not the only who intervened are you? Nyx’s soul lives on in a human and he has a son. The plan worked after all but here is what I don’t understand. If the soul was thrust into the body of a child who was supposed to die, then how did the boy live on?
We both know Apo, he is the worst one of us all. He would never let that child live to adulthood."
"Fate." Wisdom answered. "Even life cannot defy fate."
"Of course." Lythia laughed under her breath in disbelief. For fate to intervene, Nyx had to have made a deal. What kind of deal, she was not aware and she could not even begin to guess.
