Chapter 549: Wisdom, finally!
The next day, in the lonely river village, was a rare visitor that had not stepped foot inside of it for a few million years. The visitor walked in the shadows, her presence barely felt by the few occupants who lived far apart from each other.
In the shadows, a figure crossed the river and in front of a grand house that stood alone, she stopped. The dark robes which she was wearing flew back, caressed by the wind and the sound of the sad flute.
Lythia, the rare visitor snapped her fingers and hummed a slow tune, as shadows poked around the house in search of an entrance.
One of the shadows turned back and shook his head.
Lythia threw her head back and laughed. As expected of Nyx, his house was safe guarded from unwelcome entrance. The deities could enter his village but they could not invade his house.
"What a clever one you are." she whispered.
She opened her mouth and a exhaled sharply. A sharp gust of wind, out of nowhere caused the house to shake but only barely as it remained standing.
"Tsk, tsk, so clever Nyx."
Lythia moved her body from side to side, swaying as if she was being moved by the wind. Then she figured, why go in when the one she sought could come to her?
She smiled and said, "Come on out wisdom, you have manipulated my shadows enough. I have come alone for now but I can always bring the others on my return. I have heard that our brother Apo is searching for you as well. Now who would rather face, me or the god of life?"
The door to the house opened and a voice said, "Come in, there is no need for threats sister."
Lythia smirked and teleported into the house immediately, but even then another barrier stopped her.
"This is as far as you can go." The voice said.
She turned her head and saw the god of wisdom, the one they had been searching high and low for sitting in a comfortable fluffy chair. In front of him was a jar of wine from the hounds and a plate of Scarlet’s seaweed rice balls. It was not his face but his energy could not be hidden.
Also on the table was a gold mask, one that everyone identified with Nyx.
"You have been living comfortably. I can see that Nyx has been taking good care of you." She teleported herself into a chair opposite him.
Her eyes moved around quickly as she scanned the entire room. Nyx had changed the style of his house since she had last set foot inside. Now, it resembled Scarlet’s human palace.
The hand crafted children’s toys on the table in his living room made her raise an eyebrow.
She scoffed and twisted her mouth. Nyx had really guarded his secrets well. What exactly was he planning?
"He is not here." The god of wisdom said.
Lythia looked at the gold mask and then at her brother, wisdom.
"This," he touched the mask and laughed softly. "It’s mine, it was a preventative measure to keep prying eyes contented. They see the mask and assume he is around. I cannot tell you how much fun I have had roaming around and pretending to be him."
"I am happy to see that at least one of us has been having fun." she replied, sarcastically.
The god of wisdom changed his face from Nyx’s commonly known face to his original one. His sunny clean shaven face with boyish charm made an appearance. He had a smooth jawline, rounded cheeks and a sharp nose. His brown eyes were playful as always.
His body also became slimmer, losing the bulky frame which was also Nyx’s shape.
He smiled and Lythia felt a fondness for him. She had forgotten how adorable he was.
"I am much more cute like this, right?" he asked her.
Lythia rolled her eyes and bit her tongue because she would never admit it. But her fingers wanted to reach out and pinch his face. It didn’t matter how long they had lived so far, every time any of them saw wisdom, they melted like cheese under heat.
He smiled slyly and took a sip of wine. Then, he closed his eyes and said, "I always knew that you would be the one to find me before the others."
"Really?" she answered.
He opened his eyes and nodded.
"Our fiery sister is too hot headed and careless, our brother death is too proud and arrogant. Those two...." he looked at her and laughed softly, "they would never imagine that I have been hiding out here for years. But not you, you are slow and careful."
Another silver crystal wine glass appeared on the table and he poured for Lythia a drink.
"Drink, our talk is going to be a long one."
She had many questions for him and he planned to answer them all, not just to save Nyx but spare himself a war with Apo as well. He was aware that on each one of his worlds, life angels were hiding among the humans and waiting for him to make an appearance.
Lythia accepted the wine and took a sip. Then, she went straight to the point.
"What did you and Nyx do one hundred years ago?"
He sighed and stood up. Somehow, he had always known that when he was found, this would be the first or second question he would be asked.
Lythia’s impatience kicked in and she stood up as well. He had elevated his body to the window so she did the same and stood next to him. She turned him around so that he could face her while they talked.
"I am serious wisdom, did you two really split Nyx’s soul into two? Is the human Esong Wu in possession of it? Please tell me that you were not foolish enough to do such an unspeakable thing? You are wisdom for crying out loud!!! You are the god of wisdom and you are supposed to be wiser than all of us, than any creature in the universe." she said, desperately.
"And that very trait is my curse." Wisdom told her. "I seek knowledge. If something can be done, I must know or else I will be unsettled. The greed for new knowledge is what brought me the trouble I am facing now."
He turned his face back to the window and looked outside. The wheels in his mind turning even at this very moment, which made him come to a realization.
He turned and looked at Lythia and said, "No, my trouble came from you my sisters and brothers. The gods who make decisions without thinking about the consequences on those that they rule."
"What are you talking about?" Lythia asked him.
"I am talking about the fall out from three unfinished wars between life and death which resulted in Nyx and his fellow generals planning a rebellion to overthrow the gods."
