Chapter 540: Division two games
It was unexpected and rather sudden when out of the blue, the hound showed up in the division two games. Initially, Scarlet went unnoticed; she casually sat in the crowd of revelers and enjoyed the ongoing fight just like everyone else.
She had been doing so on and off for a week now as she avoided the lime light for a while. So far she had managed to stay hidden as she observed and studied other fighters. It was her plan to sweep through this division rapidly as she did the first one. But first, she had to study the strongest players in the division and take a few notes.
The differences in division one and two were as clear as night and day. This was not a fight with simple armor; players faced each other in colossal mechas. Most of them were metallic, engraved with scars of glory from the battles they had fought. In this division, the crowd did not root for a player, they rooted for the mecha.
Even on the virtual honor roll, the name of the mecha came before the name of its pilot. That was how much the mechas were revered. For this reason, some players had actual mechas which once belonged to mecha warriors and they rubbed it in the faces of the ones who had factory bought ones.
Another difference between the two divisions was that there was no portal of oblivion. You either stabbed a vital point of the opponent’s mecha, causing it to shut down in order to win or the opponent could surrender verbally.
Some ruthless fighters did not even accept verbal surrender and went ahead to cause as maximum damage as they could, ripping their opponent’s mechas to pieces. Then, and only then did they stop.
To sweeten the pot, whatever injury one’s mecha suffered in the games, it suffered in the real world. It was made players invest heavily in mechas and made division two games costly and loved. The players went all out in every fight as if it was a battle for their lives.
The sponsors for division two mecha fights were quadruple the ones of division one. Almost every noble family had a mecha or group of mechas in these fights. They branded them with the marks of their honorable houses and lorded over each other with their strength.
The Su and Wu family did not participate in the games for some reason. Scarlet was still undecided on whether she should fight as a representative for one of the families or as an independent fighter.
The sound of metal clashing and sparks flying caused a roar in the crowd. Her mind stopped wondering and she stood on her feet like most of the other viewers. One mecha partially decapitated another and ripped off its head violently. The crowd went wild and the winner roared thunderously.
Scarlet applauded along with the crowd, very much impressed with the winner of this fight.
"Alex, add him to the list." She said softly.
She was compiling a list of fighters that she intended to fight in the second division. She had no plans of engaging every fighter. She had been in the virtual mecha fights for two hours and it was her plan to leave unnoticed.
On this night, she was not meant to go unnoticed however because someone yelled her name just as the crowd started to settle down.
"Hound, it’s really you." A familiar voice said.
Scarlet went still and she turned around to glance at her sort of friend, Alice the sweetest. How had the woman recognized her when she was not wearing her hound cloak?
Those in the crowd looked at her and a few whispered but they did not break out in any fever pitched frenzy upon her sight. In division two, the hound was unknown and undermined.
"Alice," she answered.
The woman walked through the crowd, came over and squeezed herself into the chair Scarlet had been occupying. She then went ahead to pull Scarlet down so that they could squeeze in together.
Scarlet figured that she could tolerate the discomfort for a minute or two and then leave.
"What are you doing here?" she asked Alice.
"I was tired of being third and decided to switch to division two. I don’t know what those foolish paladins are up to but three of them are now in the top ten and none of them seems to be eager to switch over. It’s fuckin stupid how they are trying to hog the entire division. I mean what are they trying to do?" Alice huffed, decidedly unhappy with the events which led her to division two.
"Has anyone else made the switch?" she asked.
"About four of us." Alice answered.
"Have you started fighting? I don’t think that I have seen your name anywhere yet." Scarlet was curious if the woman was still studying the lay out of the division like her.
"Ladies and gentlemen, it has come to our notice that the former legendary division one hound is in the house tonight." A loud voice came through every speaker in the coliseum.
Scarlet’s eyebrows rose up so fast and a bewildered expression came over her. She wondered why her name was being brought up. She had not put her name down for any challenge.
Surprisingly, rather than an applause, a loud round of "boos," went around. The hound was apparently not popular in division two.
A very bright spotlight was shined on the Scarlet and Alice, and their images were projected all through the coliseum. Scarlet could not have been more than happy that she had decided to wear a red cloak and a face mask.
"Let’s give her a warm welcome to division two." The host of the fight said.
Coordinated applause went around and highlights of her division one fights were played.
"Things are bound to get interesting in division two with the arrival of the hound. The top ten should watch their backs." Another host said.
There was mockery in his voice and the laughter which followed was equally jeering. It could not have been more obvious that they underestimated her. Scarlet was not one to shy away from a challenge.
If they thought she was weak, she was ready and willing to prove them otherwise.
"Will the hound do us the honor of debuting tonight?" the first host asked.
The question did not come as a surprise to her. It was rather laughable how predictable what the hosts were attempting to fulfill with their language. A little known fighter would not be highlighted if it was not their intention to create some waves.
"Don’t fall for it." Alice leaned her head over and told Scarlet.
Scarlet smirked and said, "Oh, but maybe they are the ones who have fallen into my trap." She smiled at Alice and said, "Don’t worry about me, I can handle myself. "
"Will you be following the same playbook?" Alice asked her.
Scarlet shrugged and replied, "If it’s not broken, why fix it?"
Her strategy had worked in division one so who was to say that it would not work here? She stood up, looked in the direction of the closest drone and said, "Number two hundred, that’s the one I challenge."
