Chapter 528: Gift giving
One thing Scarlet refused to give up on was cutting of the cake, singing happy birthday for Justin and piñata smashing. Whether the deities were here or not, it was going to happen.
As soon as every member of the family was confirmed to be present, she set out on that task immediately.
Justin’s outfit was changed into a black and white suit, his hair styled and allowed to flow and then he was brought into the second ballroom on the twentieth floor of the castle. Scarlet had decided to do this away from all the craziness.
The gathering for this moment was smaller with mostly family, a few friends, her guests and a few children that had not dozed off due to exhaustion or passed out because of too much excitement.
Justin was in his father’s arms, watching excitedly as his mother lit five candles on the first tiered birthday cake he had ever seen. His legs were swinging as he eagerly waited to blow out the candles. He had seen birthday celebrations in the animations his mother made for him but he had never celebrated a birthday like this.
In his mind, Justin thought to himself that his mother was truly the best.
Daddy simply tagged along to eat, as always.
"It’s time." Scarlet announced.
Esong carried Justin closer to the cake and Fey adjusted the drone. For a few seconds, Alix looked at it and wondered how much exactly it had captured. She might need to review the footage herself and have Alex cut out the unnecessary parts.
Her eyes drifted back to her son whose pouted lips were already attempting to blow out the candles. Aah, he was really impatient.
So as not to delay him any further, she broke out in the standard birthday song. "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you..."
More voices joined in, those of her family members especially because they had listened to the birthday song three times a day as Scarlet wished for them to learn the simple lines.
But it was not just voices of family members, deeper and sweeter voices joined in. Voices that could haunt and hypnotize, or destroy, bless and curse.
She lifted her eyes once, noticed the deities in the room and ignored them. At this point, she thought of them as stalkers.
Where she went, they followed even when they were unwanted.
At the back of the crowd, Tridon clutched his heart and laughed.
"Oh she wounds me every time she says that she does not like us."
"Can you blame her, look at the mess you have all caused." Chaos answered.
Apparently very much used to his shamelessness, the others rolled their eyes or simply sneered. Nobody had caused a bigger mess at this party than him. So why was he the one who got to apportion blame?
Everyone suddenly applauded and the deities did too because Justin had just blown out the candles. His little face was all lit up like a glow worm in the dark.
"Time to cut the cake." Scarlet said loudly. She handed Justin a knife and ensured that her own hand was holding his because she didn’t trust the unpredictable guests not to attempt something funny.
As the others counted down, set off poppers and confetti, she and Justin made the first cut.
There was something about this simple activity which brought smiles to the faces of those around. Perhaps it was the way everyone suddenly got excited, or maybe it was the innocent happiness in Justin’s eyes as he looked around in wonder.
Or perhaps it was because they had never celebrated a birthday in this fashion before. Whatever it was, the air was ripe with joy and warmth.
The humans did not notice but Scarlet and other deities did. Tu Chia, the goddess of happiness and good cheer had arrived.
Cecily took charge of cake distribution and serving the guests cake while Justin sat down on a mat with soft pillows to receive his gifts.
He was buzzing like a bee, filled with so much excitement. He would be receiving so many gifts which made him even happier. The happiness would not stop showing on his face, judging by the smile which simply refused to fade from the little one’s face.
Scarlet had taught them the art of gift wrapping so almost everyone had a wrapped gift in hand. They came in all sizes, big and small.
So as not to overwhelm the little one and create chaos, they decided to give him the gifts in an orderly manner.
King Wu, the emperor went first, naturally as the most important figure in the room. It was not said but rather implied with the way everyone was looking at him.
"As the emperor, I will be the first to give him a gif that I picked out personally with my empress." He smiled and said.
He walked over to Justin and handed him a medium sized box. "Happy Lord Justin Wu, may you grow up to be a great man of our empire."
"Thank you your highness." Scarlet said.
"Thank you your highness." Justin parroted her.
She also nodded appreciatively in the direction of the empress who stayed seated.
After the emperor, the great grandparents, grandparents and parents followed in a very official manner.
Every one else came after Scarlet and Esong, including all of his uncles, the mecha warriors who were closest to Esong.
By the time they were done, the little one was drowning in gifts because some people gave him three, five, or more gifts.
Even Frost, Ezrah and Hawk gave him gifts.
"Is it our turn now?" Lythia asked. The humans were done so it was their turn.
Scarlet had no idea what they planned so she pulled a guitar out of her storage space. "One more gift from me, a special birthday song."
She looked at the deities and said, "Please don’t gift my son with ridiculous things." In the back of her mind, she pictured Justin being gifted a flying horse, a kraken or a lightning bolt.
"You are ridiculous. Who would give him a kraken?" Tridon asked her.
"Yeah, like why give him one lightning bolt when we can give him a storm staff. He can rage anytime." Chaos said.
"Ouuh, I like the flying horse idea." Love said.
"No." She said seriously. "None of that, ridiculous stuff. You don’t even have to give him everything, I am just glad that you have attended the party. Your presence is the biggest gift ever. How many people alive can say that gods attended their party?"
"Let’s just bless him." The goddess of happiness suggested.
Now her suggestion was something Scarlet could get behind. Blessings of a deity were always a good thing.
