Chapter 522: Troubles of the future

Scarlet had just about had enough with all the secrets being kept from her.

"Go," she told the brown cat.

It darted out of the room like a missile which had been set on a path of destruction.

In addition to that, she sharpened her own ears and ordered other cats to eavesdrop carefully.

She was not the only one that was interested in the conversation between Esong and Frost, even the other two grim reapers were curious. Why did Frost act in a manner which they could only describe as subservient to Scarlet’s human husband?

They sharpened their hearing as well, determined to listen in on the conversation. But try as hard as they could, not a single sound could be heard.

Even Scarlet was confused, no cat, bird or dog was reporting anything.

"Why don’t I hear anything?" she asked herself? "Bom-Bom, have you located them?"

"Someone is blocking out all the sound." the brown cat told her.

Scarlet’s first thought was Frost. He had to be using his powers as a grim reaper to block out the sound. But, in terms of strength she was now more powerful than him, she should be able to outdo him in everything.

In the midst of all this, the humans in the room, Scarlet’s sisters particularly were observing the mannerisms of the guests and Scarlet. What was with the weird intense gazes?

"Cake, the cake, the cake!!!" Fey screamed.

Her loud screams broke the concertation of the three reapers and they looked at her. It was then that Scarlet noticed that she had smashed one of the cakes with her hand.

She removed her hand and looked at the mess she had made of it.

"What do I do with this now?" she asked.

"Don’t throw it away, we can just turn it into cake balls." Carolyn suggested, coming closer to Scarlet. Since she was within touching distance, she put her right hand on Scarlet’s shoulder.

"Is something bothering you little sister?" she asked in a low voice.

It was rare for Scarlet to lose focus when she was cooking and when it came to something that concerned Justin, she was even more obsessive.

"Is it them?" she whispered.

By them she meant the guests, Scarlet’s so called guests that they had never heard about until a few minutes ago.

"It’s nothing." she looked over her shoulder with a grateful smile. "I think I am just tired."

Carolyn’s hand extended and she wrapped it around Scarlet’s shoulders. Since she was taller, she lowered her head so that she could look at Scarlet’s face as well before saying what she wanted.

"You should stop now and take a break. You have been at this for hours little sister, you could have left the work to the robot butlers and servants but you chose not to because you want it to be special. But this is enough, everything that you have done is enough.

Justin is only four__, five now. He will not know if the cake he is eating was baked by you or a robot butler. I know you love your son, but I also love you just as you love him. You need to rest."

She wiped her hands with some wet wipes and dried them with a kitchen rug. Then, she positioned herself behind Scarlet and put her hands on her shoulders to push her out of the kitchen.

"Come on, I am going to put you to bed. Sleep for at least two hours."

Scarlet leaned her head back against Carolyn’s chest and shook her head.

"No, I cannot rest now, not yet. I have guests and I need to review some documents. Justin needs to get a haircut and try on his outfits."

"All things that Cecily, Emory and our mother are ready and willing to do." Carolyn told her.

"I have guests..."

"That can be given a tour of the castle and the city while you sleep." Carolyn said.

"You have been up all night like me, so why aren’t you resting? Sister, don’t worry about me, I am not that easy to break."

Carolyn let go of her shoulders and ruffled her hair carefully. "Why do you make me worry so much?" she asked and sighed.

Scarlet laughed sheepishly and replied, "It’s because you are my big sister. If you don’t worry about me, who will you worry about?"

The two were the picture perfect representation of sisterhood and sore eyes to Fey.

"You two are worse than Scarlet and Esong right now." Fey said loudly, "Hey, Carolyn, you have two other younger sisters in this room. Where is the love for us?"

Scarlet and Carolyn separated, and they each returned to different sides of the kitchen.

"Tch!, she is the most jealous of us." Carolyn said as she walked.

"I am not jealous." Fey answered.

It was a lie, she was.

"But you and Elroy are close as well. Do you see us complaining or being jealous about it?" Carolyn asked her.

Ezrah was watching the family interactions with a small smile on her face. It was easy to see why Scarlet loved living in the human realm more than the underworld. She had a good family, it seemed.

She was not like most grim reapers, they lived alone among the humans to avoid attachments. They spent most of their time in the underworld. Those villages wee their true homes, not the houses in the human world.

Someday, these people would be dead and Scarlet would come to be just like the rest of them. She would have to fake her death, change her appearance, abandon them and then she would be alone, like the rest of them.

Well, she could still see them but as a grim reaper not physical Scarlet.

When that time came, Scarlet would be very sad. Most grim reapers who were experiencing their first death cycle in situations like Scarlet’s cut off their emotions because they couldn’t handle it any other way.

"Are you thinking what I am thinking?" Hawk asked her.

"That in a few years she will need me to hold her hand and drag her from world to world because she will be in pain. If that’s what you are thinking then we are in sync." Ezrah answered.

"She is too attached to them." Hawk said.

"They are her human family, I expected nothing less." She said.

It was on the tip of his tongue to say they were not really her family but Ezrah would probably punch him if he did so he kept it to himself. Besides, once upon a time, he was just like her.

"Here is the birthday boy." Cecily carried a sleepy Justin into the kitchen.

Ezrah squealed and dove to carry him before anyone else. All thoughts of Scarlet’s future emotional hardships faded into the air.
