Chapter 498: Theories and coincidences.

"When did you know? How long have you been sitting on this information?" The old deity asked Carnelia.

He was angry, and the tone of his voice said so.

The fire goddess was not frightened by his displeasure. He was a part of the problem after all.

No matter what he thought or what his pride told him, he was not perfect. None of the gods were.

"I found out about six months later when a reaper randomly mentioned to me that they had seen Nyx returning to the Lonely river village.

I was taken aback. How could a reaper that should have been sleeping be up and about?

I confirmed it myself when I paid a visit to the hall of eternal sleep. He was not there, a different reaper was where he was supposed to be."

The old deity stood up abruptly and the clouds outside thundered, red lightning that was representative of his anger streaked through the clouds.

"It was a conspiracy. I will confront Nyx about this myself."

Carnelia picked up a grape and tossed it at him.

It did not the old deity, one of his crows swooped in and grabbed it mid air.

"Greedy thing." Lythia chuckled.

She whistled and it flew over. It stood on her shoulders and she started feeding it.

Carnelia meanwhile decided not to waste her precious fruits. There was still more she was holding back.

"Don’t bother asking Nyx what happened. It was my first instinct as well to do so and I went in search of him.

When I found him, he was different, quieter and sadder than I had ever seen him.

He had no recollection of the time when he had been missing. Someone really powerful had sealed his memories away. I don’t know if it had been done to him forcefully or if he volunteered for it to hide what he was up to."

"It would take a lot of power to mess with the memory of a natural born reaper." Lythia said in a soft worried voice.

"Exactly. It made me wonder if one of our many brothers and sisters was involved. Since I could not find the answers from Nyx, I dispatched my harpies. I sent them out to search every world or realm. I told them to turn every stone over and find me an answer.

I guess the answers have finally started coming."

Carnelia finished off her words in a gentler voice than she started out with.

It also held worry because the general situation was cause for worry. The unknown was always a dark shadowy monster in the mind until it was cleared up.

Lythia touched Carnelia’s arm and squeezed it gently. She knew that Carnelia was worried for Scarlet and her children, just as she was.

"Three coincidences, all on the same world. Nyx, Wisdom and Scarlet. Are they connected or are we losing our minds over nothing?"

"So what are we thinking?" The old deity yelled. "Surely we cannot be thinking that Nyx or wisdom is the father of her children. The man is human, I checked it personally."

"So did I but our suspicions about him have not faded." Carnelia added. "And the reason for that is because we find him abnormal. I have seen eating the snacks Scarlet sells in her shop on the forum.

Those things are filled with herbs, energy, purifying water and yet he is not affected at all. He can even tell the difference between what’s meant for the human realm and what’s meant for ours."

"And I have seen him take a bath with her in water that had residues of her green flame. Humans cannot stand it even for one second and yet he was not affected. In fact, he was aroused and they mated for hours in that bath." The old deity whispered.

Even though he whispered, the others heard what he said.

"Did you check his soul?" Lythia asked them.

"I did, it was normal." The old deity answered.

He sighed loudly and fiercely. So many suspicious tidbits but no touchable conclusion.

What did they have except for theories and empty air?

"So what are we thinking?" Lythia asked them. "Is it that he could be a part of Nyx’s soul or wisdom in human form?"

Carnelia held her hands up to stop Lythia’s assessment.

"Woah! You are moving too fast sister. He could be neither. He could be a human that was touched by a deity and that’s all that makes him special?"

The two conclusions Lythia was proposing were dangerous. Deities had long agreed not to have children.

Those wars had been fought, agreements had been made. If the children were those of a deity then war was sure to come. All the other gods would descend on the underworld looking to end the lives of the children as soon as they opened their eyes out of jealousy.

It would be better if Nyx was the father of those children. At least the only war to come in that case would be with the god of life.

Even that was risky because he would be targeting the children.

Things would be simpler for them all if Esong Wu was a human being. A very lucky human being that was blessed.

The old deity tilted his head and looked at her curiously.

Is that what you really think?"

Carnelia’s shoulders sagged and she sighed.

"No," she said unwillingly.

It was an admission she did not even want to voice out loud but the truth nonetheless.

"We cannot tell her any of this, especially without proof. Whoever or whatever her husband is, we should bury it until it sticks its head out." Lythia suggested.

Carnelia was of the opposite opinion.

"No, we must tell her."

"What exactly is it that you want to tell her?" Lythia inquired. "That one hundred years ago, Nyx and Wisdom met, he asked bout splitting a soul, then he vanished for a while, returned with no memories, and what....., many years later she got pregnant!

Does that make sense to you sister? All it would do is confuse and stress her and she is at another critical point in the pregnancy. She doesn’t need stress over issues even we have yet to wrap our minds around or figure out.

Let’s keep investigating and see what we find out. We will only tell her when everything is vivid."

"I agree, we are not saying a word of this to her because we actually know nothing." The old deity said.

He looked at Carnelia and added, "And I am still going to talk to Nyx."

He may not know where he had been or what he had been up to but the events leading up to that point were equally important.

"Suit yourself." Carnelia told him.

In her opinion, if the lord of death mentioned these possibilities to Nyx, all he would do was pique his interest in Scarlet.

Oh well, maybe that was a branch which needed some shaking to see what would fall out.
