Chapter 497: Going back a hundred years
Unfortunately for Scarlet, the deities had no plans of meeting with her on this day. They knew she was coming so Carnelia took Lanta up to the old deity’s castle which grim reapers could not randomly access.
Up there, they watched Scarlet and her hounds head to Carnelia’s palace in what would be a futile visit.
The old deity was disgruntled with the situation and he made it known, loudly.
"So, this is what we have been reduced to. Deities all powerful and mighty, hiding from one small grim reaper."
"We have never even hidden from our fellow gods." Carnelia said in wonder.
"Well, is one of you prepared to share our current theories which we have not even shared with each other with her?" Lythia asked the other two.
Scarlet was looking for answers and she would not stop until she got them from somewhere.
All three looked at each other and shared doubtful looks. Someone had to be the first to share what they were hiding and none of them was willing to open their mouth and say it.
"Well, what we do know is that the harpy here has brought us some disturbing news. It’s clear that Nyx was the one looking to split his soul." Lythia added.
"Does that sound possible to you?" The old deity asked her.
"We may think it’s impossible but the god of wisdom is different. If there is an answer, he would have it and he would have shared it." Carnelia chimed in.
The old deity dismissed Carnelia’s theory. If it had happened as she thought, it would mean he had missed something in his realm. Surely he could not have missed something that strange!!
"If Nyx had split his soul I would know. He is my top general, the strongest of my reapers and he is as powerful as he has ever been. I saw him just a month ago, Nyx is whole."
"Are you trying to convince us or yourself brother?" Carnelia asked him.
Lythia jumped in and added to Carnelia’s words. "You are too proud to admit that something out of your control occurred in this realm. But you forget that the remaining natural born reapers who are not sleeping are dissatisfied with the current order of things in the realms of the gods. If you cannot find the solution to the problem then it’s only natural that they seek for an answer on their own."
When Lythia spoke of the natural born reapers sleeping, she meant it exactly as she said.
Grim reapers who wanted to take a break could put themselves in a state of eternal sleep and wake up when something major happened or one of the deities woke them up.
"Nyx chose to go into eternal sleep a hundred years ago." Carnelia spoke up and shared a tidbit which none of the other two deities knew.
"What?" Lythia shouted her shock out loud.
The old deity waved his hand and dismissed Lanta. This conversation was not her business.
"Explain." he said in a demanding voice.
Carnelia shrugged and leaned back against the comfortable fluffy chair in which she was sitting. "I guess I will be sharing some of my secrets then.
If I can take you both back to a hundred years ago then let’s return to the moment when the realm of death and that of life almost came to war, again for the six hundred and ninth time since the beginning of the universe. "
She formed flames in the air above them and in the middle of the flames, images formed depicting the scenes she was mentioning.
"A male angel and a female grim reaper fell in love. It was sweet and forbidden and they snuck around until they were discovered and the two gods..." she looked at the old deity, "you and life lost your minds."
"We all recall this." The old deity responded gruffly.
He waved his hand and Carnelia’s flames went out.
"Then you recall that you two declared war on each other and rallied the troops. The rest of us were all forced to start picking sides as we tried to talk you nut heads down."
Lythia smiled and the old deity scowled.
"The grim reaper and the angel in order to prevent the war from happening chose to die. They asked the god of fate to end their immortality and give them a chance to reincarnate as mortals.
But the god of fate chose to give them a test first, if they could endure one hundred tribulations in one hundred years and still come out in love, they would get their wish. She effectively tied the hands of you two, leaving you without a proper reason to drag all of us into a long war that would lead to incredible suffering."
Maddened, the old deity raised his voice and said, "Will you stop it? We were there, we remember. Just tell me why Nyx wanted to enter the eternal sleep."
"The war was called off and all the troops were disbanded and all was right in the realms again except for one problem that nobody realized, not everyone was pleased."
Carnelia waved her again and her flames returned. This time round, it was image of the grim reapers who were armed and ready for war. They were dressed in their armor, sitting on their dark horses and flying the flag of the underworld. Undead soldiers were waving weapons, banshees were flying in the sky, the monsters of the underworld were roaring, demons were running wild and the commanding generals of deaths army were egging them on.
"Look at them brother, look at your generals. They were ready for war and they wanted it and craved it with all of their souls. And suddenly you announced that the war would not happen, the armies should disband and everyone should go back to their duties."
The old deity waved his hand and the image disappeared.
"You can wave away the image but you cannot erase the disappointment in their eyes." Carnelia told him.
The old deity frowned at her.
"Did you see Nyx and the others? They looked crestfallen, betrayed, and angry. Honestly so was I, a little bit.
Life cursed us and took away our ability to create new life in our realm. That war was our chance, their chance to avenge themselves.
Natural born reapers feel the desire to have families more than the new reapers. They once tasted that joy and they know what a fulfilled happy realm we once had. Now all we have is space and emptiness which we have filled with games and fights." she scoffed, her face filled with bitterness and shook her head.
Then she continued, "After that, almost all the natural born born reapers went into eternal sleep and Nyx, for the first time ever made the same decision."
She tilted her hand left and right then added in a high pitched voice, "Weeeelllll, he did not sleep exactly. He used it as an excuse to leave the realm unseen and visit the god of wisdom."
