Chapter 488: A clingy son
Lythia brought Scarlet to the main palace of the old deity, away from all the prying eyes of other reapers. She had a somewhat worried expression like a mother whose child had been injured.
"She is here." she announced.
The old deity, Carnelia and another woman quickly approached and hovered over her.
Lythia put her down carefully in a pool of water that was in the palace.
The woman that was with the three deities poured something in the water and it started bubbling.
"Are the children alright?" Carnelia asked.
"I think you should worry about the mother more than the children." The new woman said.
Her face and body were covered entirely by the long gold cloak with a hood which she was wearing.
"It’s one and the same." Carnelia mumbled.
The woman scoffed and bent down. She laid a hand over Scarlet’s stomach and a white light was emitted from that hand. Carefully, she spread the light all over Scarlet from top to bottom.
She closed her eyes, knelt down and pressed her head against Scarlet’s stomach and then her heart. She was like a doctor examining a patient.
She raised her head and said calmly, "The mother is fine, and so are her children. They have even started forming human shells."
The old deity pushed Carnelia aside and took her place in the center.
"It’s too soon." he said.
He was worried now. What if something happened to the children? Was this a consequence of her spending time in the small world?
He was not the only one that was worried, the other two deities were just as worried as he was.
Carnelia was also miffed because he had pushed her aside.
"It’s not unheard of, you can all relax." The woman in gold said. "It has really been so long that you all have forgotten the smallest details."
"Yeah." Lythia mumbled.
It had not just been long, it felt like an eternity.
The woman in gold stood up and dusted her hand off. Something crossed her mind and she looked at all three deities who were hovering over Scarlet.
She had indeed noticed something quite unusual.
"But I thought you said she had four babies in there, I counted five."
All three deities looked at each other and shared a look of disbelief.
"No way." Carnelia said.
The woman in gold chuckled at the fact that all three deities seemed to have been caught unaware.
"I am the mid wife for the reapers and monsters. Me and my kind have been doing this job since the beginning of time. If I say that she has five babies in there, she has five babies."
All three deities reached their hands down at the same time to touch her stomach. An extra baby meant an unclaimed natural born reaper.
"Mine," the old deity said.
"You already got three, back off." Carnelia snapped at him.
"I have one." Lythia said.
"So do I." Carnelia said.
The old deity was unwilling to surrender, one more child meant one more general to lead his army.
Lythia was the same, and so was Carnelia.
"Yeah, it’s already claimed." the mid wife told them.
Three heads turned to the mid wife and then to each other. Only deities could claim children of reapers, and as far as they knew, they were the only deities who knew about Scarlet’s pregnancy.
But if there was a hidden child that had been claimed, it meant another deity was aware of the pregnancy. Maybe this deity had even found out before they all did. Why else would they not be able to sense the fifth child?
"Who claimed it? Who dared to claim what belongs to me?" The old roared.
The mid wife shrugged. That was certainly not her territory but she knew one thing for sure. When the culprit was found, a serious battle would ensue. Deities were possessive of their things and all things underworld were the territory of the lord of death. A natural born reaper could not belong to anyone but the lord of death. Deities went to war for reasons like this.
She looked at Scarlet and wondered if this pregnancy was a blessing or curse to the underworld.
In the real world, it was one o’clock in the night and Esong was awake, just as he had been the past night. The reason for his staying awake was none other than his son Justin.
In the absence of his mother, Justin had become more clingy with him.
Since children were out of school for now to receive vaccinations for the yellow cold.
Justin was calling him four to five times a day and he refused to go to sleep if they did not talk. Yesterday and today he had woken up in the night crying inconsolably and Esong had to go home and stay with him.
Right now, he was in bed with Justin with the night time for baby star story book and a Severus plushie. He also had a blanket which had Scarlet’s scent which he covered Justin with.
"Why are you still awake buddy?" he asked his son.
Justin shook his head and buried his head in Esong’s chest.
"Did you have a bad dream?"
Justin shook his head.
"Is it mommy again? Do you miss mommy?"
It was the only other possible explanation which Esong could think of.
Justin buried his head deeper and in Esong’s chest and sniveled. Just like that, Esong had his answer.
"I see, you are missing mommy again." he said in a soft voice.
He pulled his son closer and hugged him tightly.
"Mommy is coming back to us soon buddy. She promised us both that she would not be away for too long. Do you remember what she said to you?"
He placed a hand over Justin’s heart and drew a small heart.
"When you miss mommy, just think about her and place your hand here. That’s where she is and she is watching over you."
Justin sniveled and Esong sighed. Yesterday it worked but tonight might be quite tricky.
"How about I sing you a lullaby like mommy does? Or maybe we can sleep in the sunroom and watch the stars." he suggested.
He did not wait for Justin to reply and carried him up in his arms.
On the way out, he passed through the living room and saw his parents and grand parents awake. From what he could smell, they were drinking coffee and passing time by watching television.
News was already out that RGB captain Atlas was dead and his life story and career were being covered.
They all looked away from the television and looked at him curiously. Cecily’s face folded when she saw the small bundle in his arms.
Esong wondered why his grandmother was eyeing him as if he was kidnapping his own son. Not that he owed them an explanation about why he was taking away his son but he felt the urge to say anything anyway.
"I am taking him with me." he told him.
"Why?" Cecily asked.
"Yes, why?" Emory added.
"We will sleep in Scarlet’s sunroom tonight. I will bring him back before I leave for work in the morning." he told them.
Justin sniveled and Esong patted his back. Maybe he could take the day off and spend it with his son. That space crack was not going anywhere anytime soon.
