Chapter 487: A painful victory

In thirty minutes of fighting the nine headed monster, Scarlet came to a realization that fighting the monster was not as simple as she thought. The heads kept growing back after each one was cut off.

As if that was not bad enough, the water volume was rising rapidly and making everything much more wet and somehow chaotic. It seemed like the ruined palace was about to be covered in water completely by the rate at which the water was increasing.

Every time the monster moved it’s body, small waves would be formed drowning those who were not on higher ground.

She was hovering in the air and watching another head grow back where she had just sliced and she groaned in anger.

"Arrrrgggh!! how many heads does this thing have in storage?"

She yelled loudly as she got an energy gun out of her storage space. Beheading had failed but perhaps if she shot the entire top half of the monsters body off then there would be no more heads popping out.

"The goal is not to kill the monster, it’s to get to the pearl___, focus." the voice in her mind yelled.

It was true that she was focused on the wrong thing, even the angel was trying to get through the gaps between the monsters head.

"Hmph!!!" she scoffed.

Her eyes darted back and forth as her mind calculated the distance between the monster and the pearl. If she could get enough leverage, she would be able to swing herself onto the wall and take the pearl.

"Severus." she yelled.

The hound had it’s sharp teeth around one long neck of the monster, ripping through it as if it tearing through soft meat.

"Busy." he answered.

"Change of plans." she told him. "Come over and fling me as high as possible.

Severus abandoned what he was doing and he made a beeline for her. She took off running as well, meeting the hound half way.

Then, he grabbed her carefully with one paw and flung her as far and high as he could in the direction of the high wall. As she was flying through the air, she fired the gun as accurately as she could and she managed to take out four of the eyes on two different heads of the monster.

She landed on top of one of the heads which gave her an advantage as the monster could not exactly bite itself. Quickly, she abandoned the guns as she needed her hands and dropped a couple of bombs and blue electrifying balls in the water to confuse the monster and buy herself time.

Boom, Boom, Boom.

Loud explosions’ rocked the floor of the maze, causing the palace to shake and all the heads which the monster had roared loudly.

It stomped it’s feet and the ground shook. If the palace was sinking slowly before, it was now picking up speed.

"Hurry, the angel has caught on to your strategy and so have two others." the voice in her mind said.

The sense of urgency in Scarlet’s heart grew. She was so close, and she could taste the victory on her tongue.

She threw her soul binding rope out and attached it to the statue of the water god. This made it simple for her to swing herself all the way to the statue.

From the corner of her eyes, she saw the angel darting in her direction. Without thinking twice, she reached her hand out and grabbed the pearl.

The trident of the water god faced downwards and swiftly stabbed her right hand which was pulling the pearl out.

"Aaaaaah." Scarlet screamed.

The high pitched wail of pain was heard all through the maze.

Scarlet’s body trembled and a chill invaded her body. Pain, the kind of which she had never felt before travelled through her blood stream.

It was her hand which had been stabbed and yet her entire body felt the same pain. The desire to let go of the pearl and save herself became loud in her mind.

"Do not let go, pull it out." The voice in her mind said.

Scarlet wanted to curse the voice because the trident was returning to stab her hand for a second time.

It was not the only danger she was facing because the angel of life was thirty seconds away from her and he had a mean look on his face. So much for first to get a hold of the pearl wins.

Scarlet released a bit of her green flame and the pearl loosened. She was now sure that she had a firm grip on the pearl and she sent it to her soul gourd.

"Severus, get in the soul gourd." she told her hound.

It was time to go home.

She smashed her invitation against the wall and yelled out," I quit."

As soon as those words escaped her mouth, Scarlet felt her body being pulled into a portal. It was like being inside of a turbulent airplane, as her body was banged from side to side.

She felt the urge to vomit and so she did, right before her eyes closed and she blacked out.

Her body fell out of the portal and landed at the same gates where she had entered the small world from. She was still unconscious and Lythia who had been there waiting for her as soon as she said the words I quit carried her away.

There were other reapers around when she was being taken away and most had differing opinions on the events which had just occurred.

Scarlet had successfully acquired a soul growing pearl which made her the most envied grim reaper in the underworld. However, this did not explain why she had quit.

They were watching the participants and they had seen many other things in the small world. There were thousands of small islands to explore.

Special herbs that were ripe for picking, special divine beasts, special items that gave reapers other abilities. All these things and many more could be traded in the underworld or other realms.

When a reaper successfully stayed in the small world until the last day they would come out with wealth that lasted them for eternity sometimes.

Why then would one choose to quit just because they got one good thing? A pure soul was great but at the end of the day, she would still be a reaper.

Whatever questions they had, they would not be getting answers and they were left to come to their own conclusions.

"She really is unpredictable as they say." A soul registrar told one of the gate keepers.

"At least she got something. That’s better than nothing. The gate keeper replied.

They went back to watching other reapers who were still in the small world. One that had voluntarily left was not entertainment, those who were still there were.
