Chapter 455: More surprising information

It would be a massacre for sure, she thought, a bloody massacre. She would certainly have her hands full as a grim reaper for sure.

"Another rumor has it that the beasts had no specific time of attack. Winter was not their only season as it stands now. One of the scientists did something that caused this change.

Again, we don’t know what it was otherwise the empire’s researchers would surely have figured out something and expanded on it by now.

It pains me to admit but we don’t know much. We remain ever as you call it, frogs at the bottom of a deep well."

He sighed, a deep regretful sigh of a man that had battled against the world, was still battling and was losing.

He used his right hand index finger to smoothen out the stress wrinkles on his forehead.

"I guess mecha warriors are here to stay forever."

Scarlet felt sorry for her husband and all the rest of the mecha warriors. They would fight forever unless someone figured something out and she was that someone.

"What happened to the research the scientists left behind?" She asked.

"The first emperor apparently either destroyed it all or hid it somewhere nobody can ever find it.

A select group of mecha warriors go from planet to planet, city to city in search of clues but we have no idea what we are looking for. Basically, they just go to every place where the first emperor is rumored to have visited. Maybe one of these days we will get lucky and find something."

Again, he sighed loudly and frowned.

Scarlet stroked his chest and smiled encouragingly.

"Something will be found I am sure. I don’t think the emperor destroyed it. If he was seeking for a way to control the cracks and beasts then he would have needed to have the knowledge to close them if he ever needed to."

Esong nodded agreeably.

"That’s the general consensus but nobody knows where he hid the true records of the scientists to date. Honestly, I am beginning to think that this search is futile and we should concentrate on finding new solutions."

Scarlet nodded, he was right. If the search was not bearing results, it was time for plan B. In fact the time had long come because many centuries had come and gone.

If it was up to her, all the empire’s scientists would be brought here to see the vortex and share ideas on what they thought would be useful in it’s closing.

But it seemed the current emperor was not willing to share the information with the public.

All secrets eventually came out however, someday, the people would figure this one out.

"And the original scientists themselves, what happened to them?" She asked them.

He shook his head, completely clueless about this one fact.

"I have no idea. Word is that the emperor killed them all to protect his secrets because they went against his orders and closed the cracks.

Others say, they went into the cracks and simply vanished, never to be seen again. Worse still is the fact that their identities are unknown. If we knew who they were, we could find answers from there at least."

They were like ghosts, those scientists. Nobody knew who they were, not even in rumors was a single name uttered. The first emperor had done a great job at cleaning them out.

Scarlet tapped the fingers of her hand against his chest as she contemplated on whether to share a name she knew.

Technically every member of the Varakas family was already dead.

Arya and Lora’s identities were airtight thanks to Alex.

Perhaps this could even be a chance to restore the lost glory of the Varakas family. But this decision was not hers to make, it was Lora Storm’s.

"Hypothetically, if I knew one name of such a scientist, would it help?" She asked Esong.

He grabbed her shoulders and pushed her off his chest. He looked at her with unclear eyes, suspicion deep within them.

How could she possibly have that information? It had been hundreds of years, information like this, not even their best experts could find.

Perhaps this was her attempt at a poor joke.

"No way." He said.

She smirked and replied, "Yes way."

She was so confident, completely at ease that all doubt evaporated from his body.

"No way!!" He said again.

This time round, it was not with disbelief but shock.

Scarlet wrapped her arms around his neck and shrugged.

"My teacher was a well connected man. How else do you think I know someone from the Lunar federation?

He knew people from everywhere and he passed those contacts and connections to me. Of course, I have grown them some more because information is power. But you can’t tell anyone about this, it’s just between us."

In the back of her mind, she thought about the banshee, spiritual animals, Severus, other grim reapers and even the deities. Those were all connections, not human but useful connections none the less.

In fact, they were better than humans because they could move unseen.

"Wow!!" Esong exclaimed. "Oh wow, I could kiss you right now. I hope you are not pulling my leg woman because I will...." he broke off and smiled.

Teeth all out, resembling a canine.

He felt a shiver roll down his spine and he drew in a quick sharp breath.

His wife was staring at him with a dangerous look in her eye. It reminded him of the early days when she would point her knife at him.

"I will hug you. I got so lost in your beauty that I forgot to finish what I was saying." He finally finished his sentence.

"Nice save." She cooked her head and said. She added a little light laugh to her words.

"Anyway, I have one more unexpected surprise for you."

She touched her bracelet terminal and a hologram video with grainy footage started playing.

The green dot on the video meant that it was a live footage.

"What’s this?" He observed and asked.

"I sent a toy car with a camera into the vortex and this is all I have so far."

This time round, Esong’s jaw dropped open as the number of surprises now threatened to overwhelm him.

In one night, just one night she managed to provide answers to more than a few issues perturbing the empire.

"Wait a minute, how did you find the crack?" That part riddled him.

"I am a hunter, studying the patterns of animals is my job. I noticed that no animals exist around this part of the forest and I went over to investigate and boom!, there it was.

I got curious and decided to take a peek." She narrated with a smile on her face, ignorant of the anger on his.

"Are you crazy!" He suddenly shouted at her. "Why would you even go close to it? What if something grabbed you? What if you died? Where the hell were your bodyguards?"

"I only went close enough to throw in the car, I am not so reckless with my life. I am going to live up to three hundred years, not a day sooner." She declared.

Esong suddenly stood up, lifting her in his arms.

"I think we should go inside and continue the rest of this talk."

They had been outside for close to two hours. They could dive deeper into all this over dinner.
