Chapter 454: The empire has secrets
"Sooo.." she drawled on. "What do you make of it?"
Shaken out of a stupor, Esong looked at the video which had restarted and shook his head in disbelief. One question at a time, he decided. He would get the answers out of her slowly.
"How?" He asked, astonished.
"How what?" She asked.
"You do realize that this right here is not normal, right?" He emphasized. "I am blown away by these epic revelations of yours tonight. Right now I am wondering if I married the greatest spy in the universe."
She looked at him with a sharp and focused gaze.
"Talk, stop dawdling." She told him.
Esong bit his lips and looked away from her. He looked at the sky as he contemplated deeply on the issue at hand. By law, now that he knew she was behind the video he was obligated to report it.
He was a man who always believed in duty. But what if duty put his most loved one in harms way?
There was no way he would allow her to put herself in danger. More importantly she seemed to have information that the empire did not have.
It was just like her identification of mutated beasts and how to kill them. She had cut down half of their struggles alone with her information in winter.
Maybe it was time to share with her some of the empire’s most well hidden secrets.
He said softly, "The secret of the crack in our space is not mine to share."
She gasped and grabbed his arm.
"You know!!" She said in dismay.
"We have always known about it, but it’s not like we have a solution to it and we can never seem to pin it down." He told her.
"It all started with the first emperor and his desire to expand the empire. He waged countless wars, stretching on for years. Everything, almost everything was destroyed."
He spoke softly, looking out at the sky with a glassy look in his eyes as if he was not present in the current moment or as if he could see it.
No, Scarlet thought and corrected herself, it was as if he had witnessed it.
"To win a war in such times, especially against the more technologically advanced Lunar federation he needed faster ships, stronger weapons, better teleportation devices, quicker routes through space and more energy stones.
A lot of aggressive scientific advancements were made in those times, especially after a group of scientists escaping the Lunar federation moved to the Sun star.
The tide of the war changed, the emperor got what he desired as the Lunar federation backed off and the Sun star expanded.
This planet, the red star, the green star and the others were not part of the Sun star back then, they were conquered forcefully. I don’t know who the original occupants were, our history doesn’t cover that part."
He stopped talking, got a packet of coffee sweets from his storage bracelet and opened one, handing it to her. Then he opened another for himself.
Scarlet could piece together bits from his story and compare them to what she read in Madoxx’s diary.
The group of scientists who changed the tide of the war were probably the Varakas family and some other fugitives from the Lunar federation.
The emperor at the time had probably got rid of them after using them.
Isn’t that what they said, kill the hunting dog after the hunt is over.
She rubbed her hands over her arms, fighting off a chill. It was cold, she hated the cold.
"Are you cold?" He asked her. He obviously noticed when she rubbed her arms.
She nodded.
Esong got one of his cloaks from his storage bracelet and wrapped it around her.
It was not as if she could use her own jacket to warm up but she enjoyed letting him dot on her like this.
He loved doing little things for her as long as they brought a smile to her face.
"Is that better?" He asked her.
Again, she nodded in response.
He suddenly swooped her up and sat her down on his laps. Additionally, he got a blanket from his storage bracelet and wrapped it around them both.
"This is much better." He told her.
"I will not argue with that." She said, and she wrapped her arms around him.
"What happened next?"
She was curiously to know about his version of the events of the past. Everyone knew that history was written by the victor.
"Mmm, development like this, quick, dangerous and uncertain does not come without a cost. In search for quicker routes to transport soldiers from one world to another within seconds, cracks started forming in space. Along with the cracks came these monsters, unseen before by any human eye.
They came in all shapes and sizes and wrecked havoc on the empire, and killed thousands of people. They were just as strong as mechas, stronger even. Weak human bodies did not stand a chance against such beasts. They were mangled and torn apart.
It is said that the streets were filled with rivers of blood and littered with rotting torn bodies. The stench was so strong that one could smell it from every neighboring planet.
Despite this devastation, the emperor was apparently fascinated and excited. He wanted to find a way to control the beasts instead of killing them or finding a solution to stop them from coming through. With such monsters at his command, he could control the entire universe easily.
As a matter of fact, it is claimed that he wanted more cracks to be formed in space and he commanded the scientists to do so."
Esong shook his head and sighed loudly. In his mind, he called that emperor a fool.
He looked at her and said softly, "I don’t know everything honestly. Most of what I am telling you I have heard through rumors and whispers."
"There is no smoke without fire. I believe that in every rumor is a minor truth. If we put it on a scale of a hundred, usually ten percent is the truth even when the rumor is false." She tried to expand on her theory as best as she could.
"See, if someone was to say perhaps that we were kissing in this garden right now, it would be mostly false.
Ten percent is true due to the fact that we are in the garden indeed. Ergo, there is some truth to the rumor."
He nodded as she spoke, but she was not sure if he agreed with what she said or he was simply playing along.
"So, you have said cracks. Does this mean that there was more than one?" She had picked up on this when he was talking.
He tilted his head slowly, to the left and then to the right.
"That’s the rumor, or one of the rumors anyway. Nothing is certain because there are no records about this to be found anywhere.
If there was more than one crack then it means someone back then found a way to seal up all the cracks except for one.
We struggle to kill the mutated beasts from just one crack for three months every year, imagine what it would be like if there was more than one."
