Chapter 93: Bite mark

After Lucian closed the door, Ave stood where she was, staring at the closed door with his last words swirling around her mind. He had told her to try not to act like herself in front of the guests, which meant she had to be careful until everything was over, or she might get herself killed before achieving anything here.

Sighing, Ave walked back towards the bed and sat down on the same spot Lucian had when he put on his shoes, and even though he wasn’t there, his scent still lingered in the air, causing her body to tingle. She ran her fingers against the pillow he’d used, which still looked creased. Then, as if realizing what she was doing, she abruptly retrieved her hand and cursed at herself.

"Aveline, get your damn emotions and thoughts together!" She gritted in frustration. She couldn’t afford to let herself get emotionally attached to the prince when her goal was clear as daylight. She was here for a reason, and that reason was to change the fate of Pendragon through Lucian’s rise to the throne and his healing. That was all. She didn’t come here to find a man or a home; she already had her home.

Not to mention, after a flash of memory she’d recalled from her childhood this morning, she wanted so desperately to make her father pay for what he’d done to her. She had waited for years until she was successful enough to get back at him and his other family, but she was yet to do anything before this.

If she continued to allow the prince to affect her emotionally, she might end up ruining everything. Thus, it was time she focused on other things while putting the falling-in-love quest aside for now. She had to focus on how to bring most of the guests to Lucian’s side instead, without letting the Empress know.

Ave was about to stand up from the bedside when a knock came from the door, followed by Lydia’s voice, "Your Highness, are you awake?" she asked.

"Yes, I am. Come in," she permitted, as she stood up from the bed the moment the door cracked open and Lydia walked in with a fresh set of clothes, followed by other maids carrying hot water wooden buckets. They proceeded into the bathing room after bowing to Ave and greeting her.

"You’re awake early today, Your Highness," Lydia said as she set the dress and shoes aside and held out a robe. After the day of the accident when the Princess had started acting strangely, this was the first time she’d woken up early.

"Yes, I thought to wake up early since I missed welcoming the guests last night," she lied. She wouldn’t have woken up this early even if the world was crumbling down, if it wasn’t for Lucian’s erection that had woken her up. She wasn’t an early morning person.

"Where did you go yesterday, Your Highness? I waited all day for your return after you left with the second prince, and the Empress sent a royal carriage to take you here. I didn’t know what to do, so I lied to the royal coachman that you were unwell and sleeping and shouldn’t be disturbed. Thank God the Empress believed it and didn’t push for me to wake you up." Lydia rambled on as she led Ave to the bathing room.

Ave, who was following behind her, couldn’t help but sigh in relief. With Lydia’s lies to the Empress, she didn’t have to feel so worked up about what to say anymore, and she couldn’t help but notice how Lydia was becoming more comfortable around her. Before, the girl would tremble and cry at every little thing, but in the past few days, she had become more expressive.

"Thank you," Ave said, thanking the girl, who turned to look at her with a frown before bowing her head. "You don’t have to thank me; it is my duty to protect you, Your Highness."

As they entered the bathing room, the rest of the maids who had filled the pool with cold and hot water bowed to her before excusing themselves.

Ave took off her dress herself as it wasn’t one of the complicated ones she usually wore, and before stepping into the bathing water, she folded the dress and walked back to the chamber in her chemise to put it away under the mattress, as she’d promised Lucian to protect the secret of the dress and not let anyone know, not even Lydia. Not that she didn’t trust the girl, she just didn’t want to risk getting Lucian and herself into trouble when someone might discover it was a magical dress.

After putting the dress away, Ave turned in time to see Lydia at the entrance of the bathing room, looking from her to the mattress she’d put down. Lydia quickly bowed her head and said, "Your bath is ready, Your Highness."

Ave stared at Lydia for a moment before nodding and returning to the bathing room.

When she took off her chemise and stepped into the soothing hot water, Ave moaned in pleasure as the water relaxed her body. When Lydia began to wash her back, Ave asked,

"I heard the guests from the Banzai Kingdom are very important. How many of them came here?"

"As many as usual. The five Princesses, along with their mothers and people representing the king of Banzai, are all here, along with a few others from the Chen Kingdom and Nazia Kingdom. I heard the rest will arrive either today or in the coming days before the ceremony, as the Emperor’s 50th birthday is going to be a big celebration," Lydia beamed widely. Though they were servants, on occasions like this, they got to meet not just handsome male servants from other kingdoms but also got the chance to eat the leftover food served to the royal guests.

Ave hadn’t expected the ceremony to be this big. She knew there would be guests, but from what Lydia said, it seemed the palace would be full in the next couple of days. She needed to study everyone while trying to maintain a low profile as much as possible, as the last thing she wanted was to bring unnecessary attention and trouble to herself when she’d already caused enough.

However, she had no idea how she was going to bring the royal guests to support Lucian with the Empress, who she was sure would keep an eye on her.

Ave was still lost in thought when she heard Lydia, who had now stepped inside the pool to wash her legs, gasp in horror, breaking Ave out of her thoughts. Looking down, she realized Lydia was staring at her right thigh, which now had a bite mark and looked darkened.

"Wh-what happened to you here, Your Highness? It looks like you were bitten by something big!" she exclaimed, horrified at the thought of what could have bitten the Princess to leave behind such a scar on her delicate skin.

Without thinking twice, Ave pulled her leg away from Lydia and curled it towards herself before she looked down at the wound. A frown settled on her face as the mark no longer looked like a small snake bite but something else. The scar appeared as two small, clean puncture wounds, slightly apart, with faint bruising and redness around the edges. When she touched it, she flinched slightly as it felt a little sore and painful.

This was no longer a snake bite mark, she thought, recalling how Lucian had bitten her for the second time after sucking out the poison. She had felt his teeth sink into her flesh and the pain. Recalling the heat that rushed through her when he bit her, Ave flushed to the root of her head and cursed Lucian in her mind.

What was he, a vampire or what? She had seen enough vampire movies to know how their bites were, and the mark on her thigh looked like a mark left behind by fangs, not ordinary teeth. Now that she thought about it, they had called him the cursed prince. She hadn’t even asked him what his curse was.

He surely wasn’t a vampire, right? She wondered as she stared down at her thigh. His bite had been worse than the snake’s, and she hoped he wouldn’t come near her again or attempt to bite her, because she was going to slap him silly if he did.

"It’s nothing, some insect bit me yesterday," she assured Lydia, who still looked worried. "It will heal after I apply some of those medicinal oils."

Lydia didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t say anything and continued to help Ave bathe.

After Ave finished bathing, Lydia assisted her in putting on the clothes she had brought earlier. To Ave’s dismay, she had to wear another tight corset, tighter than usual, to the point it pushed up a considerable amount of flesh from her bosom. She knew that if a man taller than her stood in front of her, they would be staring at her cleavage.

Once she had put on her shoes, she glanced at herself one last time in the mirror before walking out to attend the royal breakfast, making sure she wouldn’t arrive late there when the guests were present in the palace today.

Ave walked through the polished corridors with Lydia following closely behind her until they reached where Lydia was to go and meet the other servants in the other part to eat her breakfast, she bowed to Ave and left.

But before Ave could step into the open halls that leads to the royal dinning hall, she heard someone call Selene’s name from behind a pillar. Before she could process who it was from the voice, she felt the person pull her hand and drag her behind the pillar.
