Transmigrated Into The Body Of The Cursed Prince Wife -
Chapter 51: The boss
Chapter 51: The boss
Ave decided that the sooner they learned the dance and got it over with, the better, so she smiled and nodded for everyone to proceed inside the carriages.
The two royal carriages were the biggest kind Ave had ever seen so far. It seemed they were used when multiple people were riding in them. Each one of the carriages could contain six people; however, to her surprise, the princesses intended to ride three in one carriage and two in the other, while allowing their maidservants to walk to the second prince’s palace, which was a bit far from the main palace despite being on the same land.
As the twins and their elder brother entered one of the carriages and were about to close the door, Ave was quick to grab it. She wasn’t going to allow Lydia to walk all that distance, and it would be inhuman to allow the rest to walk as well.
"Let go of the door," Prince Orion ordered with a frown as he glared at Ave, who was dragging the carriage door with him. What was wrong with this woman lately? She seemed to be forgetting her place around the royals, especially him. She seemed not to hold any respect for him, and he wasn’t going to have any of that from a mere slave. He would make sure she learned to respect him today.
"Let go of the door, Princess Selene, or I will—"
"Get down," Ave cut him off, unfazed by his words or his glares. The last person she would fear was this young prince, who didn’t look a day older than nineteen but still tried to act tough all the time. If she had a younger brother, he would be older than this brat.
Prince Orion looked taken aback by the tone of command he heard in her voice, and he would have puked blood from his anger and the blow to his ego if his elder sister hadn’t spoken.
"Is something wrong, Princess Selene?" she asked as she walked back from the other carriage and came to stand beside the one in question.
Ave flashed the princess a smile and said, "Nothing much. I’m just trying to make some room so we can all fit into both carriages with our maidservants. It’s not nice having them walk while we enjoy the ride."
A collective gasp escaped from everyone’s lips. Was she out of her mind to even dare suggest such a thing as making room for maids to ride in a royal carriage? In all of Pendragon’s history, no maid had ever ridden in a royal carriage. Though words had spread that Princess Selene’s maidservant had been seen getting off the royal carriage, no one had actually believed it.
Who would want to sit close to a lowly being like the servants?
Celeste chuckled while she elegantly covered her mouth with her hand. "What kind of silly joke is that, Princess Selene? Why not just get a shovel and pack the horse manure into the carriage and let us ride with the smell? It’s no different from having these lowly beings sit in the royal carriage," she said, her tone laced with a sneer, and her twin laughed along with her while regarding their own maidservants with disgust.
Ave shook her head in disbelief. She didn’t blame the princesses for their lack of empathy for the people who served them. She almost felt pity for them, as they were brought up to treat any person lower than them in such a manner, but too bad for them—she wasn’t going to take any of that while she was still here.
"Oh, if you prefer to ride with the horse manure, it would be my pleasure to shovel it on the seats for you," Ave said sarcastically as she further moved the carriage door open, snatching the handle from Orion’s grip. "Now, if you don’t want to end up riding with horse shit, I suggest you cooperate with me and let us all fit in."
The three took Ave’s sarcastic words about shoveling horse manure on the seats literally and looked disgusted and angry.
"We are not going to ride with lowly beings. And the Emperor shall hear of this immediately. I will go tell him that you plan to ruin the royal carriages made of gold with horse manure!" Isolde exclaimed as she stomped down from the carriage, ready to head back inside the palace. But Thalia, who had been looking at Ave with amused disbelief hurriedly grabbed her hand.
"You don’t have to report that to Father. I am the eldest here now, and I will make the decision on how we get to ride," she said gently.
Orion sighed in relief upon hearing that, as he was sure his elder sister would put this insolent Selene in her place. No royal would want to share a space with servants, these smelly beings, and he was sure Thalia also believed so.
The twins also looked relieved that their elder sister would make the decision and they wouldn’t have to go and report to their father, who the Empress had warned them not to let know of the dance, as it was a surprise for his birthday ceremony.
Thalia glanced toward the three maidservants who stood with their heads bowed, including her own maidservant, before she said, "Princess Selene is right. It’s not nice to let the servants walk when there is room for more in the carriage. Let’s all ride together." She announced with a beaming smile. For a long time, she’d always felt guilty about being in the carriage while allowing her maidservant, who was more like her best friend, to walk because she wasn’t brave enough to break the rules.
The more she got to be around this new Selene, the more she liked her.
Ave smirked in victory as she watched the horror on the faces of the three siblings. They looked like they would rather get killed than ride with their servants.
"Thank you, Princess Thalia," Ave said to the elder princess before turning back to the three, her hands on her hips as she said, "Now let’s make the arrangements. Prince Orion will ride along with the four maidservants in the first carriage, while I and the three princesses will take this one!"
The twins sighed in relief, while Orion’s face flushed with anger and disgust. He looked ready to slam the carriage door closed, but Ave reached out, pulled him out of it, and shoved him toward the other carriage, where he’d ride with the maids.
"You can’t let her do this to me, Sister Thalia! I’m your brother!" Orion cried out as Ave shoved him into the carriage and gestured for the four maids to follow behind him, Lydia sitting beside the prince while the others sat in the opposite seat.
Catherine, who had not been counted among the maidservants, prepared to enter as well, but Ave closed the door in her face.
"Ah-ah-ah, Catty, you are not included, my dear sister," Ave said with a smirk on her face. "You will walk there, but if you are not satisfied with walking, go in and tell the Empress to prepare a carriage for you."
Ave already knew Catherine was going there to spy, and she was going to make sure she made her job difficult for her and make the little witch pay for smiling when someone had just been killed that day.
Catherine’s hands balled into fists at her side as she glanced at Ave with disdain, not bothering to hide her hatred for her. "Just because you have the upper hand here doesn’t make you the master, Selene," she gritted through clenched teeth.
Ave raised a brow. "Then if I’m not the master here, what am I? At least I’m not the lowly maid, and that sure makes me your boss," she said with a small mocking smile. And then, not bothering herself with the young woman again, she turned to leave, but Catherine’s words stopped her once more.
"Enjoy this for as long as it lasts, Selene. Everything will soon end the moment the second prince takes another wife and you fail. I will watch your head roll on the floor."
Ave’s smirk fell. Even though she didn’t want to show or admit it, she knew Catherine was somehow right. The moment Lucian took another wife, her life would be over. If the Empress didn’t kill her, she’d be stuck here forever, which was equivalent to being killed for someone like her who wanted nothing but to leave this hell.
However, just so she wouldn’t allow Catherine to have the final word, she turned around with a smirk and said, "For as long as I live, my husband won’t be taking another wife, and for as long as he doesn’t, I will have the power to control you, Catty. I will make sure you go through hell during the days you visit the second prince’s palace." Then she turned away and walked back to the second carriage, where the three princesses were already seated inside.
Catherine’s fists clenched so hard she could feel her nails digging into her palms. Selene had become so bold that it made her question whether this was truly the same sister she had once controlled and stomped on. But one thing was certain—Catherine would make sure to ruin her, to the point where the Empress herself would demand her head.
"I will personally see to it that the second prince takes another wife when the guests arrive," she muttered angrily as she watched the two carriages roll away. Then, glancing at the blazing sun, she began to walk.
