Chapter 50: The brats at the royal carrige

Ave didn’t wake up on time despite the fact that Lydia had tried to wake her to get ready for the morning. She had repeatedly swatted at Lydia’s hand and turned to bury her head in the pillow, and by the time she woke up, it was already midmorning, with every single person in the palace up and done with breakfast.

When she finally opened her eyes, her entire body was aching. She hadn’t slept well last night due to that terrible nightmare of her being a ghost. The nightmare had left her feeling drained. And now that she was awake, she stretched her arms and glanced to the other side of the bed where she believed Lucian had slept.

But as expected, it was empty, and with the brightened room, she didn’t expect he would sleep in that late. Rubbing her eyes, she climbed down from the bed just as Lydia walked in with a bucket of hot water.

"You are finally awake, Your Highness," she said upon seeing Ave. "I’ve brought you your bathing water." She beamed and walked into the adjoining room, with Ave following behind. All she needed now was a hot bath after she’d been deprived of it all this while in Lucian’s palace.

She would have cursed at Lucian right now, but the fact that he’d helped her with the corset last night, and the thought of it and how he’d carefully and yet roughly straddled and helped her, made her flush in embarrassment, made her believe he wasn’t that bad after all. Not to mention he had been the one to wake her up when she was having that terrible nightmare.

She could still perceive his intoxicating scent on her body, and it made her remember how his fingers had grazed her back last night. She cleared her throat and tried to remove the thought from her mind. She wasn’t the kind to get easily affected by a man’s touch—she’d had male designers touch her back and body many times when she stepped into the film industry, and yet none of them had ever made her feel like a fool whenever she thought about it—until now.

She didn’t like that the thought was giving her goosebumps and making her feel fuzzy inside, so to get rid of his scent, she quickly removed her chemise and stepped into the hot bathing tub Lydia seemed to be filling up even before she woke up, as it was now filled and mixed with hot and cold water with candlelight around the tub.

She moaned in pleasure as she sat inside the hot water, her first hot bath since she’d come here. Leaning her head back at the edge, she closed her eyes while Lydia applied bathing oils and beauty treatments to her skin. If there was one thing she liked about this era, it was their effective natural beauty stuff and baths. If only the modern world would embrace nature.

"Will I be having breakfast in this palace?" Ave asked as Lydia massaged some oils on her back, and her stomach growled. She was starving.

Lydia hesitated before she shook her head. "No, Your Highness. You missed the breakfast time as you didn’t wake up early..."

"What the hell?" Ave’s eyes snapped open at that revelation. "And they didn’t think to send mine to my room?"

"That’s not how it works here, have you forgotten that? Once you miss the mealtime, it means you are not hungry," Lydia said as she resumed applying the oils on her palm to Ave’s back.

Ave felt like crying. She wouldn’t be eating here, and when she returned to Lucian’s palace, she would have to starve until tomorrow morning. That heartless jerk Lucian had said, even though she wasn’t Selene, she shouldn’t expect to be treated differently.

"Why not just kill me," she muttered under her breath and leaned her head back at the edge. At this point, she had no idea if she’d ever go back to her time now that Lucian knew the truth that she wasn’t his wife. If only that shadow woman would appear again and tell her what she had to do to leave.

She had to live for who knows how long without eating properly, while her life hung on a thin thread. The Empress could kill her, and so could Lucian who now knew she was an imposter. All he had to do was tell on her, and her head would be off her neck in a second.

That would be a good reason why she wouldn’t be facing and demanding him to make the mealtime in his palace regular.

"Your Highness, I heard you will be teaching the princesses how to dance this year. Isn’t that amazing?" came Lydia’s excited voice, cutting through Ave’s thoughts.

Ave’s eyes widened. She had completely forgotten about that part. She had indeed been assigned the task of teaching the princesses to dance, and she’d made the decision to teach them the dance she knew. At least that was an exciting thing to look forward to. She’d pass her time with that while figuring out how to make Lucian love her and help him take the throne.

For now, all she had to do was focus on her assigned job. She wasn’t going to only teach them the dance but would also require them to fit in with some new dress designs that would fit the Tiktok dance.

With those thoughts, Ave didn’t stay in the bathtub as long as she’d intended and hurriedly washed her body before stepping out of the tub. She grabbed a robe and went back into the bedroom where Lydia helped her get into another traitorously tight corset and an uncomfortable brown dress.

She wished she could wear something casual.

After Ave was done, she and Lydia made their way out of the main palace as Lydia had said the princesses might have even arrived at the second prince’s palace by now, as she hadn’t woken up earlier. However, to her surprise, as she stepped outside, the three princesses and the fourth prince were also about to leave.

Ave ran down the entrance stairs and called out to the older princess, who was about to step into the carriage but stopped and swirled around with a beaming smile.

"Princess Selene, we thought you’d left already since we didn’t see you and Brother Lucian at the dining hall for breakfast," Princess Thalia said as she moved back away from the carriage along with her sisters who were now glaring at Ave as she made her way toward them.

"I still can’t believe Her Majesty set us up with this lowly slave," Isolde scoffed as she watched Ave come to stand in front of Thalia.

"I slept in late. But no worries since you guys are still here, we could ride back there together," Ave suggested as she looked around at the royals standing before two carriages, each of the princesses with their maidservants, while the fourth prince stopped on one side regarding Ave like an ant beneath his feet. Then her eyes fell on a certain someone, causing a displeased frown to appear on her face.

"No way in hell is this one coming with us, is she?" Ave questioned the princess as her eyes fell on Catherine, who stood on one side, glaring at her despite trying to hide her disdain. And then it hit her—her nightmare last night, where she saw the Empress and an invisible man. The Empress had talked about a girl following them to the palace to spy on Lucian.

Was Catherine the other girl? But then wasn’t it a nightmare?

"Her Majesty assigned the head maid as our guardian," said Thalia, as she also didn’t like the fact that Catherine was coming with them.

Princess Thalia never really liked the maid as she never failed to report unnecessary things to the Empress. Just like the last time she’d stopped her from taking Selene’s maid, Catherine had reported it, and the Empress had told her brother, which in the end got her scolded and warned to stay away from the second prince’s family matters, as if they weren’t family.

Catherine bowed in fake respect to Ave, even though she was fuming with rage internally and wanted nothing more than to teach her stepsister a lesson for how she’d embarrassed her by slapping her the last time in front of the maids. "Your Highness, it’s my honor to go to the second prince’s palace as the Princesses’ guardian."

Or rather as a spy? Ave scoffed as she regarded the young woman with dislike. After her last encounter with Catherine and how the witch had smiled when her stepsister, Jasmine had been beheaded before her eyes, Ave disliked her even more. But since it was the tyrant Empress’s orders, she dared not disobey her again.

"First, we are being forced to be in close proximity with a lowly slave who will teach us to dance, and now another lowly slave will be our guardian? Isn’t this a huge slap to our royal blood?" remarked Celeste with a sigh as she fanned herself with a golden hand fan. She was only willing to learn this dance and go to the second prince’s palace because she wanted the most handsome prince at the ceremony to notice her beauty and grace when she’d dance, just like they’d always noticed Selene’s.

"Are we going, or are we going to stand around until Brother Lucian has left his palace?" came Orion’s impatient voice as he stood at the entrance of one of the carriages. He was only going with them because he wanted to see the second prince for something important—so important that he didn’t care that his sisters were going to be taught a dance by this insolent Selene.

"Isn’t that a good thing if he leaves the palace? Who wants to come face to face with a cursed prince?" sneered Isolde as she sent a glare at her elder brother, who they had decided to take along so he could protect them if the second prince were to go crazy like the rumors said.

Ave, who had been exchanging heated glares with Catherine, turned to look at the spoiled princess with a raised brow.

"Call him a cursed prince again and watch me sew that mouth of yours."

"You...!" Isolde flushed in anger.

"Sew her mouth while I’m here? Hmph, I will cut off your head if you dare!" came Prince Orion’s threat, jumping to his sister’s defense.

Ave looked ready to face the siblings and teach them how to respect their elder brother by addressing him properly, but Princess Thalia quickly interjected and stood in their middle. "If we keep delaying here with our argument, we won’t get to the palace on time and start our practice."

The twins and their elder brother huffed and turned to make their way toward their carriage, and Ave shook her head as she knew she was in for great work if she had to be around these three for who knows how long the dance lessons would take.
