Chapter 71: The Silent Alley

Step.

Step.

Step.

Steve’s footsteps echoed softly against the cracked concrete stairs as he descended slowly, deliberately.

His hands rested deep in his pockets as he tooked gentle steps forward.

The girl. The long-haired girl. The one he’d secretly dubbed Rapunzel in his head, Maybe it was the way her hair fell like a curtain of midnight silk, cascading past her shoulders, hiding the fragile expression beneath.

But as he approached, his mind churned with conflicting thoughts, gnawing at him like a persistent itch he couldn’t reach.

’Damn it...I had made this decision on the spur of the moment...but is this really the right move?’

"God damn it."

He muttered silently, bitter and frustrated.

I wanted to keep a low profile, like the Queen Witcher told me...’ he reminded himself.

That was the plan all along. Blend in. Be just another face in the academy...’ But Steve knew better. Being the only guy at his level in this academy was like wearing a flashing neon sign. He stood out—no matter how hard he tried not to.

And yet...

He couldn’t ignore what he had just witnessed. The girls, the bullies—they were tearing into her, cruel and relentless. S

teve’s gut clenched at the thought of letting it happen without stepping in.

’I can’t just let this slide...how about this...I won’t cause any real clash that could get me in trouble...I’ll just act as mature as possible.’

His heart argued for intervention, for some kind of justice. But his brain warned him.

They could be hostile. Those witches. Dangerous, and not just in the way most bullies are.’

His feet slowed as distant voices carried through the alley, sharp and mocking.

The hateful chatter of the girls was growing clearer now, cutting through the silence like shards of broken glass.

"Ha ha ha! Aren’t you going to do something already?" one of the girls sneered, her voice dripping with venom and mockery as she leaned against the brick wall, eyes glittering with cruel amusement.

"Aren’t you going to say what you said before? Come on—say it. I dare you."

Steve’s gaze swept the group carefully. The girl speaking wasn’t stunning, but there was a twisted confidence in her stance—like she owned the world around her.

Beside her, another girl, less striking but no less vicious, chuckled darkly and added from the side.

"She’s totally scared of you, Jenny."

Jenny—the undeniable ringleader—flashed a smirk that curled with malice and smugness, the kind of expression that made it clear she thrived on this power.

"Of course she is." Jenny said, her voice low, sharp, and venomous.

"She should be. She should know her place. I’m a damn noble. And she? Just a fucking rat. A street rat. Nothing more."

Steve’s jaw tightened, his hands twitching in his pockets.

His eyes flicked down to the girl cowering in the alley—Rapunzel, as he’d silently named her in his mind, the long-haired beauty who looked smaller than ever in that moment.

Her knees were drawn tight to her chest, feet tucked nervously between her trembling legs.

She shrank under Jenny’s shadow, trying to disappear, but there was nowhere to hide.

Jenny moved forward, stalking her prey with deliberate menace.

Her head dipped low, eyes gleaming with satisfaction like a predator savoring the fear she inspired.

"Say it again." she hissed, voice cold as ice.

"I want to hear you say it. Say what you called me."

The other girls circled in, voices rising into a cruel chorus of laughter and taunts, their words like daggers that sliced through the alley’s stale air.

Inside Rapunzel’s mind, chaos erupted—panic and desperate hope tangled in a frenzy.

Damn it. Damn it. Do something. Don’t let them win again.’ Her heart pounded violently, trapped between raw terror and a flicker of defiance.

Why can’t I do anything? Why am I always so powerless?’ She squeezed her eyes shut and pulled her legs closer, as if holding herself together could shield her from the storm.

Then, like a cruel hand dragging her out of fragile safety, one of the girls grabbed a thick handful of her hair.

Rapunzel yelped sharply, pain bursting through her like fire as she was roughly hauled upright.

"Say it." Jenny commanded again, voice dripping with contempt.

Rapunzel’s thoughts stormed, fury clashing with fear.

My hair—let go! Just once... speak up. Stand up. You’re not just some victim.’

Her lips trembled as the smallest, most fragile whisper escaped, barely audible but breaking through the silence like a fragile shard of glass:

"Slut..."

The word hung heavy between them, electric and dangerous.

For a moment, the alley held its breath. Even the bullies faltered, stunned by the quiet strength behind those trembling words.

Rapunzel’s blue eyes lifted, fierce despite the fear gripping her. They flickered with something almost like courage—a fragile but real blaze.

"I called you... a slut."

The world seemed to freeze in that moment—time stretching thin.

Then, without warning, a sharp, thunderous slap cracked through the air. The sound echoed off the walls like a gunshot.

Rapunzel stumbled backward, pain flaring across her cheek, her body hitting the cold ground with a harsh grunt.

Jenny’s face twisted into a cruel sneer as she stepped forward, grinding her heel mercilessly into Rapunzel’s side.

"If you’re not going to talk..."

Jenny snarled, voice thick with menace and dark promise.

Above her palm, a faint golden glow flickered, soft and ominous—like a whispered curse shimmering just above her clenched fingers.

But then, cutting through the tension like a blade, came a new voice.

"Okay, that’s enough."

The words were cold, sharp, and absolute.

In an instant, the alley fell silent. The cruel laughter, the hateful taunts—all frozen in place.

Every head snapped toward the edge of the alley where Steve stood, face hard, eyes burning with disgust and something unyielding.

The bullies’ expressions shifted from arrogance to caution, unease flickering in their eyes as they took in the newcomer’s presence.

Still, Steve’s voice was low but carried an undeniable weight as his glared lingered on the astonished bullies who, at that point, were left with a single pending thought-

’Who...who the hell is that?’
