Chapter 72: A Man Among Nobles
Chapter 72: A Man Among Nobles
Silence stretched long and thick through the alleyway, settling like a suffocating fog.
Not a whisper stirred, not even the breath of wind that had been winding through the stone paths just moments before.
Jenny and her two companions—girls feared not just for their noble blood but for their cruelty—stood frozen in disbelief. T
heir eyes, wide and disoriented, remained locked on the boy who had dared to interrupt them.
He hadn’t shouted. He hadn’t drawn a weapon. He had simply stood there, hands buried casually in his pockets, as though he owned the alley they ruled with iron heels.
And yet... somehow, that simple posture shook them more than any blade might have.
Rapunzel lay on the cold stone ground, arms curled tightly around her bruised sides. H
er breath trembled in her chest, her chin tucked low, eyes shut as she waited for the next kick or slap. She’d been expecting it. Bracing for it. But it never came.
The violence... stopped.
A second passed. Then another.
She opened her eyes slowly, warily, and glanced upward.
There he was.
Steve, with his head held high, expression carved from stone and filled with pure, unfiltered disgust.
His gaze moved slowly across the three girls like a scanner, dissecting each of them with a silent, withering appraisal.
He said nothing yet. He didn’t need to.
His silence was louder than anything they’d ever heard.
Steve’s eyes flicked first to the girl on Jenny’s left. She straightened her back instinctively, as though she thought she might impress him if she tried. He didn’t even blink.
’Hmm...No way in hell...’ he thought with utter certainty.
’...is she getting near my harem list. Not even if she were the last woman left on this damn planet.’
He turned to the second girl. She met his gaze, a spark of curiosity in her eyes. Her features weren’t terrible, and her figure was, admittedly, eye-catching. Her breast, especially—she was well-endowed, though her ass didn’t quite measure up.
’Hmm. Big tits, flat ass...’ Steve assessed silently.
’ Not balanced. And after everything I’ve been through? Pass.’
Finally, his eyes settled on Jenny—the ringleader, the noble, the one standing a few feet ahead of her lackeys.
His face didn’t change. If anything, the disgust intensified.
’Absolutely not...’ he concluded.
’ Just looking at her pisses me off. No grace, just a poisonous tongue behind a pretty name.’
It was that very disgust—the culmination of all three assessments—that fueled his next move.
’Alright.’
He opened his mouth, speaking with the casual authority of someone who didn’t give a damn what the world expected of him.
"Ladies shouldn’t resort to violence." he said flatly, holding his curses inwardly as much as he could.
"Haven’t you ever heard that saying before?"
Jenny and her companions recoiled—visibly. Their expressions twisted from confusion to disbelief to something closer to rage.
"What...?" one of the girls breathed.
"A... a man?"
"In Arcane Bloom Academy? " the other added, eyes darting between Steve’s face and his uniform.
"Am I dreaming?"
Jenny blinked rapidly, as though trying to make sense of what she was seeing. The very idea seemed impossible.
Rumors had whispered of it. That a man had awakened magic. That, for the first time in recorded history, a male had been allowed entry into Arcane Bloom Academy.
But she’d never seen him with her own eyes. And even now, looking at him, standing there like he owned the air itself, it felt wrong. Surreal.
The girl to Jenny’s left snapped out of it first, sneering.
"Are you lost or something? This is Arcane Bloom territory. Unless you’re a teacher—"
"I’m wearing the uniform, genius." Steve cut in, raising an eyebrow.
"What, are you blind, dumb or just plain stupid?"
That landed like a thunderclap.
The girls stiffened.
Jenny’s companions turned to her, awaiting her response, but even she looked momentarily rattled.
Her pride had been dented—no, slashed.
He’d insulted her. Her. A noble.
Nobles weren’t just respected in this world—they were exalted. Practically divine.
A noble’s blood was a sacred inheritance, a mark of superiority. And yet here this peasant boy stood, mocking her rank like it meant nothing.
Worse still... he was a man. A creature of the lower world, the lesser race in this world. And he had dared to raise his voice to her?
Jenny clenched her fists.
"Is that so?" she muttered, her voice strained.
"Then answer me this. Are you of noble blood?"
In her mind, it was the only possible explanation. There had to be a reason he was allowed to speak so brazenly. He must be of noble heritage. He must.
Steve scratched his head lazily.
"Hmm. Depends what you mean by noble. Honestly, this whole world’s class system is confusing. Kind of ironic, considering I designed half of it..."
He cut himself before saying more.
The girls gawked, too stunned to process the sarcasm. One of them, finally gathering her thoughts, spat.
"You don’t even know if you’re a noble? You... you ignorant peasant! How dare you speak to Lady Jenny that way!"
"You must be punished!" the other hissed.
Jenny raised her hand and they both fell silent. She took a breath, then stepped forward.
"I’m a noble." she said coldly.
"And you’re a man. I could have your tongue ripped out just for looking me in the eye."
She expected him to cower. To flinch. Maybe even to apologize.
He didn’t.
Steve stood unmoving, unflinching, eyes locked on her without the slightest trace of fear.
If anything, he looked bored.
Jenny narrowed her eyes.
"But I won’t. Not today. You see, I’m in a good mood." She gave a tight, insincere smile.
"So here’s what I’ll do. I’ll let you go. No punishment. No consequences. All you have to do is walk away from here and forget what you saw."
The air tightened again. Tension bristled along every invisible thread between them.
Steve didn’t speak at first. Instead, he glanced down at Rapunzel.
Her eyes had shifted toward him, filled not with hope—but with terror.
She looked like someone who knew how this scene would end. Like someone who’d seen it before.
Her trembling form filled his vision for only a moment... but it was enough.
He lifted his eyes and locked them on Jenny.
"And if I don’t?"
Jenny smiled again—this time, with venom.
"Then I’ll have to silence you."
Steve paused. But only for the briefest second.
He didn’t need to think. He didn’t need to weigh his options. He’d already decided.
’Silence me? Bitch please...she’s obviously bluffing...right? Meh...Atleast I don’t believe it.’
He stared directly at her, voice low and certain.
"Well then..." he said.
"I refuse."
