There's Something Wrong With You, My Lord! -
Chapter 81: The Start Of A Legend (1)
Chapter 81: The Start Of A Legend (1)
It was a well-lit evening to every being in the Amber Forest. The waning gibbous moon is shining brightly in the dark and magnificent star-strewn night sky.
However, despite the pleasant sky and the gentle breeze of the wind, the moon elves who are left to guard the wall are looking in one direction with bated breath.
"I don’t want anyone to despair but..." a moon elf who was probably in his 80s trailed off with a perceptible worry in his tone. He nervously gulped his saliva as he suddenly felt his throat dry. "I-I am not the only one who felt that strong and bad feeling, right?"
Just like all the other guardians, he was standing on top of the great wall looking over to see any signs of the vanguard coming back.
No one bothered to answer him.
They all felt it too.
Moon elves are beings of flesh and spirit so among other races, they are the most sensitive to any changes in their environment.
And this time, they all felt an extensive death within the woods of the Shane Greenwoods.
"No way! What about the Moon Elf Lord!" One bearer exclaimed then followed it with a sob.
This strong reaction caused a chain reaction within the crowd and it isn’t a positive one.
All the moon elves’ expressions turned grieving.
"What kind of stupid thing are you talking about?" A cold and domineering voice breaks the melancholic atmosphere.
"Head Priest Nicol!" They exclaimed and bowed at the handsome moon elf wearing long and flowing priest robes. His short brown hair dances to the breath of the evening air.
"You’re supposed to stay alert and make sure that the Moon Elf Lord has a place to come back to when they are done." Nicol’s red eyes turned fiery as they fleetingly landed on everyone. "And not talking about nonsensical things.
"Yes! Head Priest!" Their loud voices thundered in the darkness of the night.
Right after they said this they all fell where they stood as there were sudden and strong tremors on the ground.
"Oh, Moon Goddess above! What is happening?!" Voices of panic are heard all over the place. From the territories of the Yultin Clan in the north and the Hyon Clan in the south. Everyone felt this overwhelming movement on the ground.
"This isn’t a natural earthquake!" One veteran earth power warrior yelled his observation to inform the others.
"Immediately maintain your position! Those root crawlers might be coming!" Nicol ordered in his thunderous voice.
His heart was beating so fast. Did the moon elf lord fail? He questioned deep inside.
However, that is not the most pressing worry that he has. ’Please be safe my lord!’
"Go ready your weapons, we will kill all of those root crawlers!" Nicol yelled despite the growing anxiety in his heart.
"No, Head Priest!" Manulus excitedly responded to Nicol. I don’t think it’s the root crawlers."
"What do you mean?" He questioned the thin moon elf, he didn’t take the male’s correction as an offense.
"I think this is an entirely different kind of creature and they are not just one."
This time, Nicol cleared his mind and tried to focus his sight on the approaching herd of beasts. And Manulus was right. Assorted kinds of mystical beasts and animals are frantically running towards them from the Shane Greenwoods.
"What is this-," a bearer asked in disbelief due to this peculiar sight. This has never happened in the Amber Forest!
"It’s a Beast Tide." Gab declared solemnly contrary to his usual demeanor. He then explained it to those moon elves who are friendly towards him in a brief detail.
Nicol fell into deep contemplation. He heard the moon elf lord say it fleetingly in one of their conversations. It was a phenomenon that happens when the balance of the ecosystem has shifted or the natural environment of these beasts has a huge change.
He didn’t expect that such a thing will happen within the well-balanced Amber Forest.
’Did the moon elf lord somehow expect this to happen?’ Nicol thought.
"Should we kill them all?" One of the sentinels in charge asked Nicol.
"No!" An elder from the Yultin Clan immediately jumped to disagree. "Those are the potential prey that resides in our territory. If you kill all of them, then what will be left for us?"
The other became silent. As hunters, it is their rule not to overhunt since doing so will only cause negative effects in the long run. Therefore, they do not have much to argue about it.
"Did you see how many beasts are approaching us?" Nicol questioned pointedly.
The beasts that are charging at them could possibly be in the hundreds of thousands. Big and small. Fierce and meek. All of them are creating living waves that will ram at them and destroy them once they are late to take action.
"I am afraid that even this wall is not capable of stopping these beasts," Nicol said in a very serious tone. His decision as the head priest would be to slaughter all of the beasts. It was the temple’s rule to prioritize the survival of the entire race. Hence, the lives of these beasts shouldn’t matter.
However, Nicol is in the middle of wondering what would be the moon elf lord’s decision if he is in this situation and he knew that his lord would have taken the other way to deal with this.
"Summon all the skilled archers available." Nicol declared in a much firmer tone. "Shoot all the aggressive beasts in the crowd. Make sure to do it swiftly and silently in order not to frighten the other beast."
"Yes?" The sentinel asked in confusion. He was expecting the head priest to declare the death of those beasts.
"Let those beasts reach the walls. The earth power warriors are expected to mend the cracks the soonest it appears and then reinforce them to the maximum." Nicol ordered.
"Understood!" The originally confused sentinel finally regained his reason and he scampered to inform everyone.
On the other hand, the common moon elves cannot believe what they heard from the aloof Head Priest. Especially the elders from the Yultin Clan.
"This," the old moon elf was speechless at first, then he bowed his head low. "Thank you, Head Priest!"
"Haven’t you heard? The moon elf lord doesn’t like his subjects to be overly subservient. Maintain the pride of being a part of the moon elf lord’s subjects." Nicol said as he walked away.
However, before he could even go down the wall, someone pulled his long priest robe, making him stop in his tracks.
Nicol looked down and he saw a little child with eye-catching pure white wolf ears and a bushy snow-like tail swinging in his back. In the boy’s head lies a spiteful chick that has three conspicuous erecting dark green feathers in his crown.
"Chirp!" It chirped the moment Nicol’s eyes lingered on it.
’Isn’t this the moon elf lord’s bird?’ Nicol wondered why it is accompanying the little orcs boy now. ’Seems like the loyalty of this bird to the moon elf lord is non-existent.’
"What is it?" Nicol softly asked. It was then that he realized that Sibal, the boy’s older brother, was standing behind the boy. He nodded his head in acknowledgement to which the adult orc responded. "Good evening, Head Priest."
"Uhmm," Nine uttered shyly. "Those beasts are frightened about something..."
"Yes, I suppose so too," Nicol answered after the silence stretched for a few seconds.
"I can communicate with them to calm them down." Nine fiddled with his fingers. "I want to help the pretty Brother so can I go down in order to talk with those beasts?"
The little orcs looked up with hopeful eyes. One can see that he really wanted to do it.
But...
"I refuse it is too dangerous." Nicol decisively objected.
Nine was instantly on the verge of tears after hearing this.
"I can carry him on my back so that we can easily move around. Plus if we have the protection of a four-star warrior like you, then we can rest assured that my brother will not be harmed at all." Surprisingly, Sibal was willing to do his brother’s wish.
"Chirp!" The bird also chimed in, as if it was also expressing his willingness to partake in the danger.
"We also wanted to help in a way that we can. Since we the moon elf lord willingly embraced us despite the fact that we came from a different race." Sibal expressed his heartfelt thoughts to Nicol.
The Head Priest can only sigh.
In the end, during the first ever Beast Tide that happened in the Amber Forest, a brown-haired moon elf, a proud little white chick and little orc child with conspicuous wolf ears are seen riding a humongous wolf with azure fur. They are charging through the incoming wave of beasts.
This scene will be depicted in a mural in the Museum of Arts and History in the newly established country founded by the 43rd moon elf lord.
