Chapter 159: Not Fated, Never Destined (5)
Tak. Tak. Tak.
The sound that answered Xagrien’s questions was the sound of his footsteps.
Xagrien felt a little irritated as this went on for a while so he gradually slowed his pace down.
The long-haired adult dragon just threw a side-eye, his lips are carved with a faint doting smile.
"You don’t have any patience, do you? You remind me of someone," Xerxes broke the silence with his gentle voice.
However, it is marked with seriousness.
"It is important for young dragons like you to have a firm grip on your emotions since you young ones like you are prone to going berserk. I believe you already have experiences of losing your reason when you are hurt or feeling a strong negative emotion so you are not a stranger to that."
Xerxes scanned the face that almost resembled him one hundred percent and there he saw a pang of guilt flashing in the young man’s eyes. He continued walking forward with confidence.
Somehow, Xagrien felt compelled to follow the man so he once again picked up the pace but this time he let Xerxes lead the way.
"You should start practicing meditation if you don’t want to cause problems to your Moon Elf Lord in the future. What you experienced is only considered minor. But once you have the second growth phase it is quite possible that you will wreak havoc once you finally turn into your dragon form."
Xagrien silently took note of that, he doesn’t want to make Luis worry so it is important to take measures early.
"I will do that," he replied to the man in front of him. They are almost near the end of the hallway and he could see the white light shining in the other end.
Why does it seem like this man is stalling time?
Xagrien’s forehead creased thinking how this man cleverly changed the topic.
No, he will not let that question be left unanswered. This is the second purpose why he went with this Blizzard Dragon, the first is, of course, to complete his bearer’s quest.
The echoes of footsteps stopped and Xagrien’s loud voice was heard.
"But why don’t you answer my question? Who is the person behind my mother’s tragedy?"
Xerxes stopped in his tracks also but he didn’t face Xagrien. His entire body was bathed by the white light giving a sense of enigma to the young man standing behind his back.
Xerxes said in a monotone, "I don’t mind telling you who they are but I don’t recommend you exact revenge against them. It would be best if you try your best not to cross paths with them."
Xagrien’s expression instantly turned dark.
Avoid them?
Isn’t that the same as denying to bring justice to his mother?!
"Why? You sounded like a friend to my mother. Don’t you want to make those bastards pay?"
Xagrien’s pupils changed into slit once again and he didn’t realize that his body was radiating oppressive mana.
It was the same phenomenon that shocked Luis and made him tremble during the time Xagrien had his first growth phase.
’This presence!’ Xerxes was internally shocked, feeling this familiar yet unfamiliar oppression.
’Mori, this child!’ he isn’t sure if he should be amazed or worried that this young man had "that" aura.
"Seems like the moon elves and dragons will clash once again after I vanish," he whispered inaudibly. At that moment, he decided to give this young man everything that he will leave in this world.
Both good and bad.
Xagrien has no idea what the adult dragon was mumbling about so he decided to ask once again. However, Xerxes beat him to it.
"I personally think that revenge is the best however, you going against them is just plain suicide."
"Them?" Xagrien’s anger started bubbling inside him. His strong mother-bearer was bullied by multiple bastards?!
He had the urge to punch something but he pressed it down upon remembering the other’s warning earlier.
A day hasn’t passed since he was told to keep his cool at all times. He doesn’t want to appear unreliable even though the other was not his beloved Moon Elf Lord.
Feeling the subsiding aura from the back, Xerxes faced the young man and said.
"I have something that I haven’t mentioned to you earlier. I am the right-hand man of the Dragon Lord. His shield who in turn betrayed his trust in the end." Xerxes’ unfathomable emotion flashed in his cold blue eyes.
Xagrien barely saw it but he knows it is something like sadness. He remained silent, letting the other let out a piece of his mind.
"I am also the second most powerful dragon of our race yet I have fallen due to the hands of the same people that haunted your mother."
"Why don’t you cross that light so that you can vaguely guess the strength of the enemies that you will be facing once you decide to face them to a bloody revenge?"
Xagrien looked at the man confusedly. However, he decided to do it. He took powerful steps to reach the other side of the hallway and there, he saw a wide open space whose floors are carved with shining outlines of magic circles.
At the same time, a beeping sound rang from the system interface, signaling the clearance of the quest.
Although this is the main reason he was here, he didn’t get a chance to celebrate it.
Xagrien’s eyes are nailed in front of him.
"This..." Xagrien uttered. He was speechless looking at the sight in front of him.
In the center of the magic circle was a massive body of a dead dragon. Its scales are blue with a faint hue of black. This dark pigment appears every time the mana leaves the body.
The temperature inside this space is colder than outside. It seems like the place is covered in ice although there is no frozen water around him.
Xagrien’s scrutinizing eyes landed on the terrible gashes in its seemingly hard body and Xagrien took a step forward in an effort to see the injuries better but an overwhelming feeling blanketed his body.
A tremor shook his hand to his surprise.
"What is this heavy mana?" He blurted out.
Xerxes looked at the confused young man and responded. "That is just my pure mana. The energy that is stored in my body. It is nothing much compared to what it originally was 20 years ago so if you want to know how powerful those bastards are, then multiply this strength by three times and think if you can face this much power, Xagrien."
"If you wanted to beat them all then you should be able to reach six times of this strength," Xerxes added without a hint of exaggeration in his words.
Xagrien clenched his shaking hand.
This is the strength of the dragon. He internally thought.
It was overpowering him but his desire to avenge his mother was stronger. Like a fire, his determination started spreading in his chest so he declared.
"I will work hard to achieve more than that," Xagrien met the cold blue eyes of the gentleman in front of him. "Just tell me who they are and I will reserve them the most deadly end."
Xerxes silently studied the burning fire and he couldn’t help but remember the familiar stubborn purple gaze of the bearer that he loved to the very end. "Mori... seems like the fate we are avoiding will inevitably happen in the future."
His whisper only faded through the wind.
"They are the powerful "spears" of the Dragon Lord. They are the selected dragons serving the Dragon Lord." Xerxes finally decided to spill it.
Without pulling his punches.
"Your mother and I are branded traitors for taking something essential to the dragon race." Xerxes stared directly at Xagrien.
The young man felt as if his soul was reflected through that gaze and with the weight of the facts that came out of the adult dragon’s lips, he unwittingly took a step back.
’What could possibly be the thing that Mother stole from the dragon race?’
Xagrien could still remember that they have nothing except his mother’s iron spear that’s been broken after the fight against that damned earth dragon.
"You will be against the entire dragon race in the future if you remain harboring that vengeance in your heart." Xerxes pointed out to Xagrien.
He thinks that saying this is already enough to hint that revenge would cost him dearly. The peaceful life with his beloved. Xerxes is still skeptical at the thought that this promising young man is mated with a lord.
But with his limited time, he cannot antagonize the lovesick young moon elf-dragon. Maybe a little warning is enough for later.
On the other hand, Xagrien understood the underlying meaning behind the words and it left him in a dilemma.
What love should he protect his mother’s or Luis’?
Xagrien silently wished that Luis was on his side. With him, he is at ease. Just Luis’ cheerful voice and he would be fine.
"What are the things that you took from them?" He asked.
Xagrien isn’t sure about the reason behind that question. All he thought was what is that important thing that made his mother willing to put his life at stake?
What Xerxes’ answer was unexpected was that Xagrien’s eyes trembled.
