Chapter 160: Not Fated, Never Destined (6)
While Xagrien and Xerxes are doing their conversation, Luis and the little spirit of the Heart of the Forest are engaging in a very serious talk.
"That is way beyond my powers, little spirit," the Moon Elf Lord solemnly said to the small python.
"Keeping the fragment of the soul of your dear dragon friend in this place is the same as refusing him to have his final rest. You’re like enslaving him to be your friend and believe me that will spoil every good thing that you shared."
"But he died a slow and painful death! He didn’t deserve it! I am sure that he will also agree since he has a lot of things that he needs to do!"
At this moment, the little tree spirit is wearing his heart on his face. Luis calmly watched this extremely honest snake expose the wish that he might be keeping deep inside him.
This one is not a bad friend.
Maybe because this tree spirit has lived for quite a long time and has been friends with someone who has a very long life, he might have forgotten something inevitable.
Although reluctant because it might be painful, Luis stepped up to remind the others of what he is missing.
"Living in this world means that we need to carry corresponding weights. Didn’t you think that burden is too much for someone who has an incomplete soul?" Luis threw a no-nonsense question.
"I am not sure what kind of Dark Magic Arts he practiced to separate a fragment of his soul but I am quite sure that he must have been given a heavy payment for doing such."
His head flashed the sound that Xerxes was making through his ice minions.
It was a tired and weak voice. Completely different from the one he is projecting when they faced him.
"But..." the spirit tried to search for words in his head to convince the Moon Elf Lord to help him but Luis intercepted it in a fairly ruthless way.
"You are being greedy."
The little spirit silently lowered his head and didn’t say anything after that.
Luis hated himself for shutting down such an interesting individual like this Heart of the Forest but he doesn’t have a choice.
Someone needs to veer this honest one back to reality. Beings of flesh and spirits are different.
Luis reverted his eyes from the sorry state of the translucent snake in front of him.
Something just keeps poking in his heart whenever someone is looking downcast like this one.
"How come you hate it every time someone tells you that you are kind when you are indeed a big softie, Luis Lee?" Luis finds himself remembering the words spoken to him by his friend back in the apocalyptic earth.
’It’s weird that the voice of Kang Jinwoo is resonating in my head right now. But for the record, he is accurate this time.’
Luis is getting soft on this spirit even though it shot a twig at him and he just met it this one time.
’Is there no other way?’
The Moon Elf Lord bit his lips in frustration towards himself because he felt like he was about to give himself another headache.
’I freaking hate myself.’ and Luis immersed himself in thinking.
Seeing the scrunched face of the Moon Elf Lord, the little spirit felt tensed on his back and reluctantly said. "I... I will think of something else, Great Moon Elf Lord..."
"Shhh!" Luis used his index finger to signal the spirit to be quiet. "I am currently thinking!"
Although the tree spirit is confused by that action, he willingly zipped his snake mouth.
On the other hand, Luis’ head is swirling with various information to think of a way. But just like what he expected, the Inheritance doesn’t have a godly art that would let him make such a miracle.
’What about this mark?’ the Moon Elf Lord’s left palm touched his forehead.
This symbol that he is suspecting as a Sigil.
The factor that may be the reason behind the creation of smart and cute Baku.
"Can I rely on this one?" Luis uttered.
Hearing these words, the little spirit’s eyes shone with hope. Maybe the Moon Elf Lord has found a way!
Ting!
A pleasing sound of a bell shortly filled the immersed Moon Elf Lord’s hearing.
"Xagrien did it! And without any huge commotion happening!" Luis energetically blurted out. No booming sound or tremors means no violent fights broke between the two. He could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Luis’ serious eyes turned crescent in an instant because of joy.
How come he forgot that there is a cheat walking with him? He got the system!
At the same time, multiple translucent windows popped up in front of him.
[Congratulations, Unnamed Moon Elf Lord! You completed the gold-tier quest: Secrets of the Dead!
You received the following rewards: Sucker Touch (Acquired Skill), Golden Easter Egg, 50 system points (x2), 30 Exp points (x2)]
Luis felt as if his heart was doing circus stunts upon seeing the generous rewards from the completed quest.
With this, he can finally unlock another skill!
Another pop-up window welcomed him and it added another layer of happiness to Luis.
[Congratulations, Unnamed Moon Elf Lord! You reached level 2!
You received the following rewards: 100 system points and enabling the Administrator’s hotline.]
’Administrator’s Hotline?’ Luis tilted his head in confusion. It was then he realized that there is a new icon found in the upper right part of the system interface.
It’s a typical envelope icon.
If he is not mistaken, this appeared before they first updated its contents for the worst.
Can he communicate with the bitchy admin now?
That is for him to find out later. Right now, what he needs to do is to see if there is a useful item included in the golden easter egg that he can use for this little spirit’s impossible request.
"Hey, little spirit! What is that?" Luis exaggeratedly reacted as he was pointing in the opposite direction.
Seeing the strong reaction of the Moon Elf Lord, the little tree spirit looked in the said direction but then he saw nothing off.
"Great Moon Elf Lord, what are you pointing at?" The innocent one asked.
He is oblivious to the fact that Luis only did that so he could click on the golden easter egg and view the mysterious reward.
Luis fooled him.
"I thought I was seeing something weird in that direction. But it turns out that I might be mistaken. Probably it’s just a shadow," Luis’ guilt-free answer.
The moon elf lord is sneaking glances between the system interface and the tree spirit. This is a very crucial part. He could only rely on whatever item this egg spits.
Luis is confident that the system can provide him with items that would help him in their current concern such as the God of Life’s Oopsie Doll.
The loading finished. Revealing the item he was waiting for. However, something unexpected happened.
A strong fluctuation of mana suddenly swept over them, giving chills to Luis’ exposed skin. He was about to blurt out "What is it?" but the little tree spirit who’s in the form of a python cry interrupted him.
"It’s Xerxes! Great Moon Elf Lord, we need to follow them!"
Luis could make out the strong sense of urgency coming from the other and right then and there, he knew that something major was happening.
~
"I think as my mother’s son, I have a right to know what made my mother sacrifice his safety and future. Xerxes, what did my mother take from the dragons?" Xagrien seriously asked the man.
He cannot even use the word steal because deep inside him, he is wishing that his mother didn’t do it.
The determination and love reflected in those almost familiar purple eyes struck him hard.
Seeing this young man like this is like a powerful illusion that fleshed out his memories from before his death.
’I’m sorry, Mori. I think I cannot fulfill my promise. This kid has to know so that he can protect himself.’
Xerxes took a deep breath. Since his time is running out, it’s better to do a leap of faith.
"It’-arghh!" Xerxes willingly spoke to answer however, before he could finish, something assaulted him in his chest.
He clenched his fist over his chest and his body suddenly became less opaque. His entirety started flickering like a fire being blown by the wind.
Pain bursts through his core. It is not physical since his body has long since passed. The sharp pang originates at the very core of his existence. His soul.
"Xerxes!" Unintentionally raising his voice, panic is written on his face. "What is happening?"
’I thought I could cheat fate once again... I was too arrogant.’ Xerxes thought as his face got contorted to the throbbing sensation brought by his cracking soul.
"I didn’t expect that the Oath of the Soul would still bite back at me despite the only thing that remained was just a fragment."
Oath of the Soul. Xagrien was shocked upon hearing that familiar term and his head replayed the memory when Luis suddenly fell during their battle against the Stone Golem.
It’s like a trauma resurfacing upon seeing the man in front of him in almost the same condition as Luis before.
"Can I help you with anything?" Xagrien asked, worry painted subtly on his face. He doesn’t know what to do in this situation. "Why did you make such a dangerous pact?"
Despite the pain, Xerxes tried hard to speak. "Just like you, I am also asked by the only bearer that I love. So I willingly offered my soul more than 22 years ago at the time when you were still in Mori’s womb."
