Chapter 138: The Storm (2)
That night, Xagrien woke up to the heat in his surroundings. He thought that maybe his mother lit up a fire for them. It was so warm and comfortable that it made him fall into another deep slumber.
However, when he felt the slight quake, he knew that something was wrong. Xagrien opened his eyes.
What he saw would leave him scarred forever.
"Mother?" That is all he could utter. His mind was paralyzed to think of anything as his purple orbs reflected the scene where his mother was stopping a humongous beast from entering their cave. It was a fearsome beast that was covered with thick armor like-scales all over its body. Its teeth are pointed and sharp, obviously meant to prey on anything that has flesh.
This is a four-star beast, an Earth Dragon!
It may be called a dragon but according to his mother, it is anything but a dragon. It was only called this way due to its massive body and little resemblance to the dragon race. Xagrien remembered Mori saying that it loves to keep its scales dry.
This beast must be looking for a place to stay away from the storm and their cave was what it first saw!
Xagrien saw his mother pushing it with his hunting spear. The heat that he felt came from Mori’s black lightning.
The discharged lightning was considered as strong but it was controlled so it will not cause their place to cave in.
"You’re awake now?" Mori answered at first Xagrien thought he was fine until Mori coughed and spat out blood from his mouth.
"Mother!" The little boy cried in fright, he never saw his mother in such a terrible state. His instinct was to run towards him and help and Xagrien would do just that.
"Don’t! This Earth Dragon is not someone of your age to handle. Do you want to get wounded and heal it after months?! Go deeper into the cave and wait for me to burst this damned beast away from the entrance." Mori paused, it was only brief but Xagrien felt that it was the longest silence he ever experienced from his early memories.
"Then run away. You know what we always do right? Don’t look back and run away," Mori said firmly, without any hesitation.
"But mother!" Xagrien protested, fat and heavy tears cascading down his cheeks.
"Yes, I am your mother so do not make this hard for me!" Mori cried. "Just do as I say!"
Little Xagrien flinched at the sudden roar from his mother it was probably the first time that he ever heard that. As a child, he felt emotionally wounded, he ran to the other end of the cave and cried just like any child.
But he knew that his mother only meant to keep him safe.
"Xagrien, your mother was fatally wounded by this thing’s claw and I am afraid I cannot create a miracle. I can’t defeat this four-star beast without going down myself."
The heat inside the cave intensified and the crackling sound of lightning sounded as he listened to his mother’s weak voice.
"I’m sorry, your mother was too weak. I can only do this much as a three-star warrior."
"No! You are the strongest bearer that I ever saw!" Xagrien yelled without looking back at his mother. He can’t. He simply has no courage to do so.
"Because I am the only bearer you’ve ever met."
"Ah, while I also said that do not be like your father," Mori said as he was ready to fire the lightning that contains all of his remaining nature’s energy. Even if he tried to hold it in, his tears stubbornly fell.
"Don’t be like me. Be strong enough so you will not die while protecting your children in the future."
That was the last statement that Xagrien heard from his mother and a loud boom followed.
Thankfully, the last attack seemed to be more effective since its destructive power was doubled due to the rain and water around them. The beast flew a good few meters from the entrance.
This time he looked back and saw his mother valiantly jumping at the injured Earth Dragon.
"Run now!" Mori yelled for once and he used his almost broken spear to stab against the scorched scales of the beast. Xagrien wiped his tears, gritted his teeth and ran as fast as he could.
"Arghhhhhh!" He yelled his frustration. His young voice contains great grief. Mori heard his son’s roar and he has mixed feelings about it.
"I never wanted to let you live a life of running away... I’m sorry, my son."
"Even until now, I’m a coward to speak of his name," Mori said as a familiar face flashed in his mind. "If I did, maybe you would know that your condition was not a curse but a gift."
He continued his incessant stabbing. Of course, although weakened and paralyzed, the Earth Dragon struggled harder, inflicting more terrible wounds to Mori’s body.
It was a fight to the death. A race against time.
The two wrestled for a while until one of them dropped and took their last breath.
Xagrien, on the other hand, was restlessly scouring the muddy forest, looking for herbs that could treat his mother.
He was told to run and yes he would run. But he will tread the path back to his mother. Xagrien simply refused to give up.
The rain was heavy and the forest was shrouded with thick fog making it hard for him to see. But that didn’t destroy his motivation, he struggled even harder.
His efforts came to fruition when he found one that could be used to treat wounds.
Xagrien ran at his fastest speed and reached the location of their cave.
"Mother?" He carefully approached Mori as he saw him standing on top of the dead beast. In his hand was his broken spear.
His mother won against a four-star beast! A huge beast at that!
Xagrien ran frantically to Mori. "Mother!"
Mori heard it and turned to the source of the sound. Through the hazy sight, he saw his son, running straight to him. At this point, he is already too weak to move or even speak loudly, but he wanted to reach his son for one last time.
One move and his body started falling from the top of the dead Earth Dragon.
Xagrien tried to catch his mother using his small body but to no avail. Mori fell fast and he hit the ground with a loud thud.
Little Xagrien knelt and embraced his mother under the heavy onslaught of rainfall.
Mori felt his son’s warmth through the chilling coldness of the rain. No, it wasn’t just the rain or his surroundings that were cold, his body too. His strength was slowly slipping off of his limbs. Mori is aware that his time is almost up.
But as a mother, he wanted to know first if his son is alright and he must warn him of the beasts that might come once they smelled the scent of the blood.
"Are you fine, Xagrien?" Xagrien heard his mother say while trying to catch his breath. "You should have run away."
Just these words and Mori’s breath was no longer.
