Chapter 40: The Danbury Couple
Chapter 40: The Danbury Couple
Breakfast started with several dishes on the table, and the room was harmonious. The Danbury couple was trying to build a good relationship with the royal couple.
Cedric, surprisingly, was good at socializing, and he had a certain charisma around him when they conversed. Abrielle had thought Cedric was not a people person, but to her shock, he was handling everything quite well.
Despite being a vicious villain, the original Abrielle was not interested in politics, the same as Hazel, although when writing this book, she had to wrack her head. Those Chapters were the hardest for her to write.
Abrielle focused on her meal, and seldom chirped into the boring conversations. She could not help but wonder if nobles didn’t have better things to talk about besides trade and foreign politics. The annoying part was that she had to pretend like she was enjoying the conversation and smile whenever spoken to.
Keep up the perfect image of Prince Cedric’s wife, and that was not the worst. Cedric was acting like they were a loving couple, throwing compliments at her, which also made her cough out blood.
"It’s so wonderful to see how much you love each other. It reminds me of how I was with Fiona before we had children. Now, they are all she cares about." Rudeus said with a soft smile while glancing at Fiona. Finally changing the topic.
From their gaze, it was obvious they were a loving couple and not for a show like most marriages. Fiona’s face turned scarlet with a bright blush under her husband’s gaze. It was a beautiful sight but this show of affection made Abrielle feel like throwing up.
Cedric reached out for Abrielle’s hand to place a soft kiss on it while she was smiling sweetly at him. They look like an actual loving couple but they both knew what they truly felt for the other in their hearts. "I am glad the Duke of Vesper gave his daughter to me because she was the best thing that happened to me," Cedric said; his face was covered with a mask, but Abrielle was certain he was amused.
"That’s wonderful. We were at the wedding, but you left before the celebratory feast, so we weren’t able to give our blessings." The duchess said with a lovely smile. Abrielle’s face was getting stiff from smiling so much in one day.
"We had to leave early because of the long journey ahead," Cedric replied, which the noble couple understood because they didn’t stay long for the feast and left Vesper for Danbury that same night.
"By the way, when do you plan on having children? The earlier you start, the faster you can get rid of them." The duchess chuckled followed by her husband. For a weird reason, Abrielle’s face blushed because she knew they would not have any children.
She planned on killing this bastard and carrying his child was the last thing she wanted. Having Cedric’s child would ruin all her chances of ever getting married again after his death.
"We are working on it but it all depends on Abrielle. I am willing to have as many children as we can have, but I have to consider the princess. I don’t plan on taking in another wife because I want her to be the mother of all my children." Cedric said his voice was so tender it felt like he was putting a burden on Abrielle’s shoulder.
She could not help but release a dry laugh at which Cedric smirked. ’ Poor guy, you will be dead before I carry any of your children.’ Abrielle thought to herself.
"Pregnancy is tasking on the ladies. My wife has been a blessing. Some couples find it hard to carry out the duties in the bedroom." Duke Rudeus laughed dryly which made Abrielle. Cedric didn’t like her smile because he knew what was going through her mind.
"We haven’t had any problems concerning that." Abrielle finally chirped into the conversation. The duchess blushed with a knowing smile. This was a pretty uncomfortable topic. Cedric quickly Changed the topic to talk about the Khoas attack which Abrielle was glad of.
"I was wondering, was yesterday the first time a Khoas had shown up in Danbury?" He enquired because although he suspected it might be someone from the royal family that was getting involved in dark magic to kill him there was also a slim chance it was summoned here for another reason.
Rudeus glanced at his wife Fiona and Abrielle quickly narrowed her eyes at them. They were minor characters in the book and might not influence the plot, but it didn’t mean they didn’t know anything.
After having a quiet conversation with his wife Rudeus finally decided to talk. "They have never appeared in Danbury, but there are some rumours I came across a few weeks ago about a major sex trafficking chain being run by witches in the kingdom of Kana where they used monsters to attack villages, although we are not sure the two are related." He explained which left Abrielle puzzled.
The only people associated with large-scale sex trafficking were the shadow claw guide. Did they send the Khoas to get back at Cedric for destroying their moonstone harbour Branch?
The meal soon came to an end and Cedric was gracious enough to see the guests to the door.
"It was a wonderful meal. Thank you for having us over." The duchess expressed her gratitude.
"The honour is ours." Abrielle chimed back; she was holding Cedric’s arm in her hold as they had to keep up their act.
"By the way, I was wondering, since your Highness is around, if you would be able to attend the Danbury winter hunt? The first prince had never attended it before. It is a very fun event." Rudeus suggested, and Abrielle’s eyes sparkled at the suggestion.
A hunt was the perfect place for someone to be accidentally killed. Her mind was already coming up with several schemes.
