Chapter 39: Guest at the castle
Chapter 39: Guest at the castle
Cedric smiled at her words. She loved pushing his buttons, and maybe it was among the reasons she still had her head intact because she was not scared of the devil one bit.
Despite having a very delicate body, any man would desire and be the famous talentless daughter of the Vesper duchy and Nightshade family.
Abrielle was single till the age of 20, which was weird as noble ladies get married as early as 9 years old. The majority of ladies her age were already mothers, but yet she was the crazy noble lady who insisted on getting married to him, declining every other suitor while he was at war.
It took a lot of effort for her family to be able to get the royal decree for their marriage. The king was hesitant to marry his first son to such a prestigious family, knowing the amount of political support they could offer Cedric and even offer to make Abrielle the crown prince’s fiance.
Lady Abrielle still insisted on Cedric despite being given such an offer every other noble lady wished for. After all that, the same Abrielle suddenly decided that she didn’t want to get married to Cedric anymore.
Imagine how absurd that sounds. Cedric swallowed hard as his eyes took in her image and traced her every curve with his eyes. A seductive red witch was what he would describe her. A poison he should not taste. Before Cedric could come up with a retort there was a loud knock sound on the door.
His eyes furrowed as he glared at the door. He sat up, brushing his long fingers through his dark hair, which was as dark as a starless night, with a low groan leaving his lips.
Cedric got up from the bed and went towards the door. Abrielle had no idea who was at the door or what they were saying until Cedric dismissed the person and turned back to look inside the room.
He was stunned to realize that Abrielle was waiting by his side with her blue eyes staring at him curiously. "We are having guests during breakfast." He informed her then pulled her closer by her hand to steal a quick kiss from her lips as their mouth met shortly.
"Good morning princess. This is how you should greet your husband in the morning and not run from the bed." He chimed, amused by her red face. Cedric quickly left her room while she was still dumbfounded...
"What just happened now?" She asked herself in disbelief. That bastard took advantage of her several times in one day.
Later that morning after she had been dressed for breakfast. Cedric came to her room specially to escort her to the dining room. They were wearing matching outfits, black and gold.
The fabric was very dark and sewn with gold threads. The designs were intricate and stunning, and although her dress was sewn to hug her every curve, it was still modest as none of her body was revealed since she was a princess.
"You look stunning," Cedric complimented her, which puzzled her at how nice he was acting. "You are equally dashing." She returned the sentiment as she accepted his hand, and they made their way to the dining room.
"We will be having breakfast with the Duke and Duchess of Danbury," Cedric informed Abrielle which was not too unexpected as the winter castle is under the Danbury duchy.
"I never took you as the type that liked entertaining nobles," Abrielle commented which made Cedric smile at her words..it was not his thing as someone who spent his life in war for the past 9 years socializing was not his strongest forte but to achieve his goals he had to change
"I can be entertaining if I want to. After all, we have been together for almost a week, if not more now." He answered.
"Do you ever take off your mask? Since you sleep with it on." She asked him, wanting to know if he was exactly how she wrote him to be because, so far, she had been sensing some minor anomalies.
"Do you want to see my face so badly?" Cedric asked her, looking as mischievous as always. Abrielle was getting more convinced every day that he was either bipolar or had DID (split personalities.)
"It doesn’t seem like a bad idea to know what the man I got married to looks like," Abrielle replied. They were almost in the dining room. On their way there all the servants paid their respects to the royal couple.
"Since you are interested, I can make an exemption, but it would come at a price," Cedric mentioned as they arrived at the doors to the dining room.
The door was pushed open and they stepped in. Abrielle’s eyes immediately spotted the Duke and Duchess of Danbury; they were minor characters in the book, which she mentioned in a fleeting moment, so she didn’t know what to expect from their character designs.
To her surprise, instead of being a middle-aged couple or older, they were actually, although a few years older than Cedric. The Duke was around 28, which is five years older than Cedric, and the Duchess was 24 Years old, which is 4 years older than Abrielle.
Immediately, the Duke and Duchess met the gaze of the royal couple, and they rose on their feet to show their respects.
"Good morning, Your Highnesses." The Duke said, bowing same as his wife. "We are the Duke and Duchess of Danbury. I am Rudeus Danbury, and this is my wife, Fiona. We are honoured you granted us your audience."
"Duchess Fiona in your presence. It is an honour to meet you in person. We are very grateful for what the prince did by destroying the Khoas and protecting the nearby town." Duchess Fiona extended her gratitude.
"You may rise, I was only doing my duty by slaying the monster." Cedric accepted their greetings. Abrielle did her best not to roll her eyes at his words because she was more than certain he cared less about that town when he faced off with Khoas. He was the villain who loved bloodshed and probably risked his life because of the thrill.
