Smoke covered the alley, and Abrielle’s throat went dry. Her lungs were filled with smoke. Coughing sounds rang, and by the time it cleared, they were gone.

"I will try searching", Evelyn suggested, thinking they had escaped under the smoke screen. Abrielle grabbed her hand and shook her head.."It’s useless,"

Abrielle knew it was teleportation magic. The smoke was to cover the fact that the person who rescued Sarah looked like Abrielle. She gave Evelyn a good look, wondering if Evelyn saw the same.

"Evelyn, did you notice anything weird?" she asked the maid. Evelyn’s brows furrowed. "The entire situation is strange." Evelyn admitted.

Evelyn’s reply wasn’t straightforward. This incident made Abrielle feel uncomfortable. What was that?

The night was cold, and the palace was filled with tension. With Lucian taking control of state affairs since Kaiden could not at the moment. He had to temporarily stay at the palace.

There was this thick tension that filled the air, rumours were starting to circulate about the king but the royal family decided to keep Kaiden’s health a secret.

A maid approached the heavily guarded door with a tray. "I am here to give the king his medicine." The maid said the guards recognised her as the one that has been taking care of the king and let her in.

They nodded and made way for her to go in. The king’s chamber was large, and it was late, so the other caretakers were not around.

The maid’s eyes fell on the bed that was illuminated by the moonlight. "Greetings your majesty." The maid greeted Kaiden, who was awake but weak. His consciousness was drifting.

"How are things outside?" Kaiden’s voice was low and weak. The maid dropped the tray on the table. "Things are under control. His Highness Crown Prince Lucian is handling things well." The maid said.

Kaiden felt at peace hearing that. Lucian was truly reliable. "I wish I could help the kingdom during these trying times." He was still staring at the ceiling..

The maid served and poured the medicine into a cup; it was a tea of special herbs. Herbs infused with magic. "Everything will be fine. You have capable sons, Your Majesty. All you just have to do is focus on your recovery." She replied to the king, and she carried the cup on a saucer

The mirror caught a fleeting glimpse of her reflection, blonde hair and a face identical to none other than Sarah. The king managed to sit up.

Sarah bowed as she gave Kaiden the cup. Her head bowed, it was taboo for her to meet his eyes. Kaiden drank the entire thing and gave it back to her.

He was already feeling tired, he never understood why the medicine made him feel this way. He felt like he wasn’t getting any better.

"Get some rest, your majesty." She said lightly, Kaiden lay back to sleep. Sarah was kind enough to tuck him in.

After she was done she grabbed the tray to leave.

The chamber door opened, and Sarah’s head bowed immediately as she walked past the queen. "Greetings, her majesty, the queen of Darconia ", she greeted, walking past Eleanor.

Eleanor didn’t pay her any attention and continued to the inner room where Kaiden was resting.

Sarah quickly left the room and locked the door. There was a faint spark in her eyes.

Days went by, and the war worsened. Abrielle grew anxious each time. During this period she maintained constant communication with Fiona.

There was no word from Cedric, which was expected. It’s been barely weeks and with the rumours of how things are going. He might not have the time to write back

There was a faint knock on the door drawing Abrielle’s attention from the book she was reading by the fireplace. It was early evening, she had just finished having dinner and decided to read a bit before going to bed..

Yuki was resting on her lap. The little cat has been her only emotional support. Yuki was more clingy now that Cedric was gone. She even lets him sleep by her bed at night.

Yuki was very trained and never made a mess. Abrielle’s free hand was rubbing his white fur, making the cat purr.

"Your highness, there is a letter that has just arrived for you. " Evelyn’s voice echoed from the door again.

Abrielle’s eyes sparkled and she dropped the book on the polished table. "Please come in." The door creaked open, and Evelyn walked in. Her shoes were lightly clicking on the marble floor.

"Here are the letters," Evelyn said. Abrielle accepted the letter, then handed it to Evelyn. Yuki didn’t have an issue being held by Yuki.

There were two letters, and the one with the royal stamp caught her attention immediately. Cedric wrote back to her. She read through his letter with a faint smile.

It was a silly letter, he didn’t mention anything about how hard the war was. Cedric was trying to protect her from worry. It gave her a bittersweet feeling, he wanted her to stay in the bubble.

I am not really good at writing heartfelt letters, but I have to write before someone gets upset because I didn’t write back.

The war has been long even though it’s been just a week or more. Each minute here is sounded by the smell of blood, and it makes me miss the comfort of your arms.

I hope you are sleeping early and eating well. I love you, Abrielle. I hope to hear those words from you one day.

Please stay safe, I don’t know if it is the war or the fact that you are far away in Vitalis that keeps me up at night. Make sure to eat well and don’t think much about me. I will be fine like I always am.
