Chapter 385: Doppelganger

The tea was fun, the entire time Abrielle felt Fiona had something to say to her, but couldn’t in front of the other girls.

"Thanks for coming over," Cecilia chimed, bidding Abrielle farewell. "I enjoyed my time," Abrielle replied. They walked through the main door. The group of ladies came across a handsome man Abrielle had never seen before at the door

The man didn’t know who Abrielle and Fiona were, but from their attire, he could guess they were important. He bowed slightly as the ladies walked passed. Camilla, who was in the back, went red.

"What are you doing here Richard?" She blurted, her eyes nervously darting around. Abrielle and Fiona heard her but pretended not to. They walked down the stairs leaving the couple. Cecilia took Richard’s appearance as a hint to leave.

"I had to come see you in the morning. It is hard for me to stay away." He admitted his eyes were sincerely staring at her.

"Don’t sound like that, I already told you I need time to think about this ", Camilla replied. This was embarrassing. She just didn’t understand why Richard could not give up.

"There is a war at the border. From what I heard, things are getting worse, and the next place the intruders will attack is Vitalis. I don’t want to take the risk. I am ready to fulfil any demands. I have even started searching for other homes away from Caroline and the boys." He insisted. Camilla was thrown into deep thought. She has heard about the rumours of the wars too.

Was she ready to go back?

Abrielle’s and Fiona’s carriage was waiting for them before the princess left. The duchess stopped her to share what had been bothering her. This was the only chance they had to speak

"Lady Bertha checked on my pregnancy, and your warnings were true; she said I am being poisoned," Fiona’s voice shook. She had no idea who was poisoning her. How was she going to uncover Ivan’s spies?

"At least you know what is happening now. I advise you to change all the maids attending directly to you and carry out a thorough search of the mansion." Abrielle advised. Fiona nodded, she was also thinking of doing the same. Her baby was precious to her.

"That’s what I thought. Besides, there is something else I want to share in person." Fiona’s voice went low, and Abrielle knew it was about the war.

"New evidence linking Ivana to a foreign trade route has emerged. It explains her motive but not how it was possible she got her hands on military details." Fiona explained, and Abrielle nodded.

The moment they can reveal how Ivana is trading information, it will end the sabotage, and this war will be over. Abrielle just had to figure things out before Kaiden dies

The princess bid farewell to the duchess and got on her way to the seaside castle. A tired sigh left her lips. She wondered how Cedric was doing at war. He should be fine since he technically grew up on the battlefield.

They were going through the streets. Her chin was on her palm as she stared aimlessly at the street until a figure caught her attention. Her eyes narrowed at a figure walking past the street. Where had she seen the person before?

"Stop the carriage," Abrielle demanded without any explanation. The carriage came to a sudden halt. Evelyn was trying to figure out why Abrielle demanded to stop.

Abrielle didn’t explain anything and jumped off the carriage running in her heels. She didn’t have to tell Evelyn to follow her because she knew the maid would follow behind.

"What are you chasing after?" Evelyn asked Abrielle, who was anxiously looking for something, until her eyes caught the figure again sneaking into an alley. She was right, blonde hair and brown eyes. One thing Abrielle was good at was faces.

She remembered the maid who was suspected of an attempted assassination but suddenly disappeared after her roommate’s death. Sarah, the figure Abrielle was chasing after, looked exactly like Sarah.

She didn’t bother to hide her identity, maybe she thought no one would recognise her. Abrielle acted calmly and called out. "Excuse me," she said, trying to strike up a conversation to confirm if it was truly Sarah.

The suspect was dressed in a maid’s outfit, which was not out of place since this was a rich neighbour. She turned around, recognising Abrielle’s voice.

Her eyes fell on Evelyn, who instantly recognised her. "Sarah," Evelyn gasped, recognising the maid who had disappeared, leaving a mysterious death. Sarah’s eyes went wide and she bolted away.

"Don’t let her go away!" Abrielle instructed Evelyn to run after Sarah. Abrielle kicked off her heels and followed behind. Sarah was fast on her feet, but Evelyn was faster. A blade flew forward Sarah almost cutting her but was blocked by an invisible force

Just as they had suspected Sarah was a forbidden practitioner. Her eyes slit, she turned around to attack Abrielle unaware of the princess’s strength. She has deliberately lured them here

"Be careful, your highness," Evelyn warned, then attacked. Evelyn was a magic user, she cast spells to disorient Sarah while attacking with her blades. Sarah wasn’t weak; her strength was equal to that of a high witch.

Her blonde hair turned silver the more they fought. Abrielle stood by the side waiting for the perfect opportunity to attack. Evelyn has finally tackled Sarah and Abrielle was conjuring a Phoenix spell to finish it..

"Stay back," she instructed Evelyn. The flames were controlled to knock Sarah out, but to protect her life since they needed her for questioning.

Evelyn jumped away and the Phoenix came flying at Sarah. It was too fast and there was no way Sarah could judge. She struggled to move but her leg was already injured

At the last moment, a bright teleportation rune appeared. A hooded figure emerged out of the rune and a barrier protected Sarah..

It was a fleeting moment, and half of the newcomer’s face was covered, but Abrielle stood paralysed, looking at someone who bore a striking resemblance to her. Same height, size, hair and eyes. Even with half of the face covered it was still similar.

The Doppelganger grabbed injured Sarah and disappeared.
