Chapter 263: Gilded rose club

The carriage came to a stop. Rebecca adjusted her gloves before turning to her daughter. "Now, remember to smile, Abrielle. These ladies may be vipers, but they respect strength. And as a Nightshade, you will not be looked down upon"

Abrielle took a deep breath, pushed aside her thoughts, and stepped out of the carriage. Her tasks can come later but For now, she had noblewomen to charm.

Under the lead of Rebecca, Abrielle entered the Gilded Rose Club. Every high society lady who was someone worth knowing was here.

The building was a two-story high-end restaurant. Fantasy signage with the club name written on it. This was a more relaxed side of the mainland. Although it wasn’t on the island where very high nobles resided, Falcon Street was still considered an expensive neighbourhood.

On walking through large wooden doors Abrielle and Co passed a short passage before they arrived at the glass doors. Servants stood at the entrance to welcome members.

"Please do you have an entrance Card?" The guard asked a noblewoman dressed in expensive clothes. It was a face Abrielle recognized.

"Sorry, I am Duchess Fiona Danbury; I don’t have a card yet, but I was invited by the Duchess Ivana Darkhaven, the founder," Fiona explained that she was the lovely duchess who had invited Abrielle to the winter haunt she was hosting with her husband.

Abrielle was pretty surprised to see the familiar face, but it was expected as a high-ranking noble for Fiona to be invited to the club meeting.

"You don’t have to remind me that the founder is Duchess Ivana. Sorry, I can’t let you in without a card." The guard insisted. It was getting to a sticky situation and would be rather embarrassing if a duchess was denied entry to the club.

Fiona was in a state of peril and didn’t want to embarrass herself. She clutched her little purse that matched her lovely green skirt she paired with a feminine white shirt. She was dressed rather officially, but yet from the texture and elegant design made with gold threads,, it was obvious she was a lady from wealth.

The Danbury duchy was rather wealthy, but there were families far richer than the Danbury family, like the Nightshade family, the Darkhaven family, which was the king’s right hand and the Silverheart family, which had the largest armies and military strength almost the highest families.

In comparison, the Danbury family was so little. Fiona cleared her throat. "This is my first ever time coming, and a card is yet to be issued to me. None came with the letter; if you can get Duchess Ivana, this can be easily resolved." Fiona insisted; from the look on the guard’s face, Abrielle doubted they would take Fiona seriously.

She felt sorry for the duchess and nudged Rebecca, who was getting bored of the wait. Her amber eyes met Abrielle’s sapphire ones and there was a silent understanding between them.

"I can’t get the duchess to attend to such trivial matters. I suggest you step aside. There are others in the line." The guard dismissed the young duchess’s claims and then nodded in Abrielle’s direction to show others were waiting in line.

Fiona refused to glance behind, she was infuriated by the guard’s nonchalant behaviour. "What do you mean by trivia matters. I was invited by the Duchess herself and I implore you to get her." Fiona demanded standing her ground.

The guard glanced at his colleague a look many recognized they were about to throw the duchess out.

Abrielle whispered softly at her mother. "Mother, just this once," she pleaded with Rebecca, who didn’t want to have anything to do with this. The Duchess sighed in resignation.

"Do I have to get involved?" She sighed and then decided to step in. Rebecca moved forward towards the little drama.

"Duchess Danbury," the older woman chimed cutting into the conflict. The guards looked in Rebecca’s direction, recognizing the famous Duchess of the Nightshade family. Rebecca was rather popular despite living three weeks away. That just spoke a little about the Nightshade family influence.

Despite that, she was a regular face at the club during the spring festival. "Duchess Nightshade." Fiona recognized the duchess immediately, her eyes glancing behind where she recognized Ava, the wife of the High pope and, of course, the young princess.

"I had no idea her holiness and the princess was here. I am sorry for whatever inconveniences I might have caused but there seems to be an issue with my invitation." She explained to prevent the slightest chance of offending the Nightshade family.

"I understand, dear; I watched a good part of the drama. You are a duchess and should not be pushed around by these things." Rebecca dismissed her, her gaze trailed to the guard. She arched a brow at the young man who was yet to acknowledge her presence.

"Are you blind or lost your manners?" She scoffed at them. The guards quickly snapped from their initial shock. "Forgive our manner," they bowed slightly showing their respects.

"You should be glad I am in a good mood today. Make way I don’t have all day." She scoffed; Rebecca was a troublemaker; she didn’t clearly say they should let Fiona in.

The guards parted and the Nightshades made their way in. Fiona trailed behind but was stopped. Her face turned red seeing how stubborn the guards were. They didn’t ask for a card from Rebecca.

"No card no entry." They insisted, Rebecca clicked her tongue. "You truly lost your manners. The Duchess is with me. I really can’t fathom the audacity you have to stop a lady I have recognized." She snapped at the guards.

"But the rules..." One argued but was cut short by Ava. "Do we look like we care about the rules? Let Fiona in, and if anyone has any issues with that, they can express their displeasure to us." Ava sneered, knowing even the queen would be careful when addressing her, knowing her control in the temple, not to forget the Nightshade name was no joke.

"Let her in boy," Rebecca drawled.
