Chapter 262: Penalty for disobedience
Chapter 262: Penalty for disobedience
Not even Abrielle had seen Cedric this vulnerable, only Callista. It was ironic how the voices got louder when he was with Abrielle and were subtle with Callista. Although she could not stop them entirely her presence made them subtle.
He felt her cool energy flowing through his body. The pain was subsiding but the voice kept on screaming. It was telling him he was doing something wrong and his actions would only do him more harm than good.
It wanted him to listen, but how could he obey those words and claims that felt completely wrong and against him? He just couldn’t bring himself to.
"I can’t stop them, Cedric. I don’t understand the cause, it is your subconscious telling you the truth you are ignoring or might be a curse." She explained what she thought. Cedric scoffed. It was definitely a curse.
"I can’t live like this forever." Cedric groaned; he was a man that has been through hell, yet something as simple as voices were breaking him.
"I know it is painful but maybe you should consider listening to... " Callista’s voice was stuck in her throat. The sharp gaze from Cedric with a heavy pressure, one that she had never felt before him, shut her up. It felt like a load was placed on her shoulders.
She cleared her throat, her hands shaking a bit. A loud cheer rang through the walls. Lucian’s match was already over. Callista knew he would give his rose to his sister again just like the past few days.
"Maybe we can talk about what the voices tell you. There might be a clue in it." She suggested her voice was warm and caring. It seemed to have true concern for Cedric. Cedric’s head fell back. He could not ever open his mouth to say what the voices had to say to him. At times, they were whispers. Other times, they were screams.
"I’d rather not talk about it," he answered, his breath getting more stable. The sweat on his forehead glistening on his forehead. The priestess nodded; she withdrew her hand, seeing that Cedric was getting stable.
"I guess it is something you would rather keep to yourself but I suggest maybe you should talk to someone to get it off your chest. Even if it isn’t me. I am sure your wife would be open to talk to you." Cedric thought about her words. How was he going to tell his wife he was a psycho that fought with himself over thoughts of hurting her.
How will he tell her despite promising to stay away from Callista at times, he could not help to fall in her arms or he might lose himself? There were so many questions and he knew he had to stop this.
"Only if it is that easy," Cedric muttered his voice was raspy. There was silence between both parties.
Before Callista spoke again, "I know this is the wrong time to bring this up but we can’t change the plans. " Callista reminded him.

The carriage rode through the streets of Vitalis; the streets were ever-vibrant with spring festivities all over. At night it was worse as drunks littered the floor.
Abrielle’s head was in the clouds she could barely hear a thing Rebecca was chattering about the latest scandal, her voice dripping with amusement. As she gossiped with Ava. She had left the Arena after Lucian’s match using the excuse that the sight of blood made her sick.
"Astrid, stark naked in the royal gardens," Aunt Ava repeated for what felt like the tenth time. "I still can’t believe it! And with a servant, no less!"
Rebecca scoffed. "Oh, believe it. The entire royal family saw it. Poor General Eris imagine his shame, seeing his wife like that." Poor Astrid was now a topic on everyone’s lips thanks to Cedric
Abrielle remained silent, her fingers lightly tracing the embroidery on her skirt. She didn’t have to imagine. She already knew Cedric had arranged it. Astrid should never have attempted to drug Cedric.
Astrid had offended the tyrant, one who never forgives. Just the thought of that also gave her goosebumps. This was his punishment, a cruel, calculated humiliation that left the princess disgraced. Abrielle wasn’t naive enough to pity her, but she also wasn’t foolish enough to speak about it. She rather kept her mouth sealed.
She sighed honestly. She didn’t feel like gossiping; she had a ticking bomb on her head, and it was weighing her down, yet she still had to smile while going to a club meeting to meet those vicious ladies.
"You should have seen Queen Eleanor’s face," Ava continued, giggling behind her hand. "She looked as if she had swallowed a lemon whole!"
Rebecca smirked. "I heard Astrid scream and tried to run, but there was nowhere to hide. Servants and nobles alike saw everything." Normally, the truth was mixed with lies. Abrielle almost burst out laughing.
"Serves her right," Ava muttered. "Though I wonder what will happen to her now?"
Rebecca waved a hand dismissively. "She’s ruined. If Eris doesn’t kill her himself, the court will rip her apart." Abrielle knew Astrid was not going to die; Eleanor would not let it, but Astrid’s glorified days were over.
Abrielle turned her gaze to the window, watching as the bustling streets of the capital blurred past. The spring festival had transformed the city colorful banners hung from the buildings, street performers entertained on every corner, and the scent of fresh flowers and sweet pastries filled the air.
The carriage soon slowed as they neared their destination The Gilded Rose Club. It was an exclusive gathering for noblewomen, a place where political alliances were whispered over tea, and marriages were arranged with the flick of a fan.
Ava, of course, was already scheming. Poor Sebastian knew his mother’s plan already."I must introduce Sebastian to Lady Clarisse’s daughter," she mused. "The girl is sweet, well-mannered, and from a good family, not to forget she has a good magic affinity."
Rebecca arched a brow. "Poor Sebastian is getting a wife this spring." Abrielle chuckled at her mother’s words. Her hand covered her mouth as she laughed.
Ava huffed. "He just needs a little push in the right direction."
The carriage came to a stop. Rebecca adjusted her gloves before turning to her daughter. "Now, remember to smile, Abrielle. These ladies may be vipers, but they respect strength. And as a Nightshade, you will not be looked down upon."
