Chapter 264: The Darkhaven secret
Chapter 264: The Darkhaven secret
Abrielle knew her mother and aunt were in the mood for a fight. She felt sorry for the guards who were here to serve the amusement of a bunch of bored noble ladies.
"Lady Astrid had clearly stated we..." Guard stubbornly insisted on the rules once more. He was truly a Zealous man something Abrielle admired his character for.
Rebecca glanced at Ava, and the Ladies started laughing. "I was expecting the dowager queen or maybe Eleanor," Rebecca laughed, referring to the queen without her title. It spoke volumes of Rebecca’s audacity, not power. The Nightshade family might be powerful and all but the royal family still held the main power.
Rebecca was in quote a popular troublemaker in her social circle especially during her early days when she was struggling to fit into the roles before she turned into the graceful lady she was now
She was older than the queen and still remembered the day Eleanor was brought to Darconia. During Eleanor’s early days, Rebecca had been among the ladies appointed by the Dowager queen to educate the new queen
Honestly, Eleanor and Rebecca had a rather good relationship Rebecca promised to match Abrielle with Lucian once she was born. She knew that the wife of the crown prince ultimately held more power than a duchess. Sebastian was always a last resort.
But life had other plans, her daughter rejected outrightly having anything to do with Lucian before it was official. Abrielle hated the thought of it from the first day Rebecca mentioned him along with several other top nobles. There was even a time when Abrielle was meant to be married out officially to a foreign prince for diplomatic reasons.
Abrielle refused and attempted to kill herself, saying she would rather die than marry anyone except the tyrant’s first prince. Rebecca cried her heart out that day at her obsessed daughter’s foolish words, knowing it was a bad idea.
This was not time to think about her back story, but she laughed at the fact the Guard chose Astrid over Rebecca.
Rebecca cleared her throat, trying her best not to burst into a burst of laughter. "You are choosing a general wife who was caught in a shameful act with a servant over me. Please don’t make me laugh and let the Lady in." She scoffed
The guard was a bit lost; he didn’t want to offend Rebecca, so he reluctantly agreed. He knew Astrid was in a difficult situation now everyone knew of her situation
"We are sorry for making you wait. " They apologized then let the duchess pass. Fiona’s eyes sparkled, glad the high duchess had stepped in to help her. Having no idea, Rebecca had no intention of helping if not for Abrielle, who insisted.
As soon as they passed the glass door. She gave them a bow of respect. "I am honoured you spared your time to help" she extended gratitude.
Rebecca waved her off dismissing her. "It is nothing dear. Enjoy the afternoon. I am sure Lady Ivana is expecting you." Fiona nodded, then left, leaving the ladies of the Nightshade family.
Immediately she was far away, Rebecca’s favourite minion and sister-in-law chirped in. "Poor girl, she is trying so hard and yet has no idea that Ivana is playing. I feel sorry for her." Ava sighed piquing Abrielle’s curiosity
"What do you mean by she is being played?" The princess curiously asked, Rebecca shook her head. She was disappointed. After all, she thought Abrielle was still lacking.
"Elle honey, you should be observant. Look at Fiona and the other ladies and you will understand. It is obvious." Rebecca hinted. Abrielle’s brows furrowed. They were all dressed in expensive pieces, she struggled to see it but soon realized the difference.
"She isn’t wearing a dress," Abrielle muttered not sure of her answer. Rebecca smiled. "Close but not exact. Don’t worry, I will explain," Rebecca answered in a low tone as they made their way in.
"Fiona insisted that she was invited, but there was no card, which is very unlikely. A card must always be sent with an invite except in one situation." Rebecca mentioned.
"What might that be?" Abrielle asked being completely left in the dark. She was so completely into the topic she forgot about her tasks, which made her depressed all day.
"Except when Ivana deliberately sends an invite to an unsuspecting lady that has no idea how the club is run just to humiliate her." Ava chirped in. Ava was a couple of years younger than Rebecca, who was 46 years old. She was a 41-year-old lady with lovely chestnut hair and green eyes. Unfortunately, neither Sebastian nor his younger sister took any of their mother’s features.
Sebastian’s sister was married off years ago when she was 16 in a diplomatic marriage. The same one Abrielle had rejected. Fortunately for Abrielle, back then, Rebecca also didn’t like the idea of her daughter being sent far away and suggested the high pope’s only daughter be sent instead.
Abrielle, at that time, was just 16, and Rebecca brought the excuse that the older girl be married off first, and that was how Adeline Nightshade was married off.
Abrielle was surprised by the explanation. She didn’t understand why Ivana would be so bitter to do something like that. She wondered if there was any form of grievances involved or if Ivana was just a salty lady
"Ivana is in charge of the invite. Why does she want to..." Rebecca hushed Abrielle. Her tone was slightly higher.
A smile curled up Rebecca’s mouth, one Abrielle knew for knew from her memory whenever Rebecca had something to say about someone who wasn’t nice. "Let’s say Ivana is a salty relative," Rebecca whispered. Abrielle’s eyes went wide she had no idea the Danbury family was related to the Darkhaven family. It was never mentioned in the story.
"I had no idea." She blurted out.
"Only a few know, but the truth is the Rudeus Danbury, as many know, is actually Rudeus Darkhaven, an illegitimate son born to the Duke of Darkhaven right under Ivana’s nose." Rebecca sneered about to serve a very hot story to Abrielle.
