Chapter 260: Her first fiance

The third day of the rose duel was rather spectacular. The audience was cheering as they watched them take down the ghoul, just like the first day. There was an increased difficulty though, no horses and the ghouls were of a higher rank

Yet the knights finished in triumph, although some fell and had to be saved by the organizers. Abrielle was in the royal booth watching everything with a bored expression. She had to leave the duel early to attend an old club meeting with her mother later. She hopes there will be no unnecessary drama happening there

A roaring cheer echoed from the audience; Abrielle’s eyes went to the centre of it all, where the victor stood jubilating after finishing off his ghoul. The lost soul slowly turned into ash.

A soft smile etched her lips, she clapped her hands together. She had to since the knight was Sebastian; just like in the original story, Sebastian stayed in the duel until the fourth, where he was eliminated during the one-on-one duels. Lucian showed no mercy to him.

Sebastian was gorgeous without a doubt, jealousy written all over the faces of the ladies who wanted the former priest to present his rose to them, but unfortunately, he was walking straight to the villainess to give it to her.

Sebastian got up to Abrielle and gave a slight bow to Abrielle. "For the princess. I am glad you showed up today." He chimed giving her the single rose stalk

"Thanks, your performance was spectacular." Abrielle praised him while accepting the rose. Its bright colour shines under the lights.

"It is nothing compared to how your husband left the crowd speechless yesterday," Sebastian replied, Abrielle felt no pressure talking to Sebastian. It was perfectly okay to accept flowers from family members in her opinion.

"I guess I missed a lot then. But honestly, Sebastian, I think you should give your rose to another fair lady. There are a lot of girls that meet the eyes." Abrielle suggested bringing the rose to her nose. It was strong and a bit intoxicating.

From the outsider’s view, they were pretty close, but no one dared say any rumour behind them, well, except the royal family.

"I did give out one to the daughter of the Ashwood duchy yesterday because you were absent but I’d rather give it to a close friend than to a random person. Mother speaks about finding a match before the end of the festival, but that’s another topic." Sebastian chimed, grabbing the princess’s hand and placing a soft kiss on it before leaving.

He smiled brightly at her before leaving. Karissa’s face was distorted at all angles as she watched from the sidelines.

"You have a lot to say, Karissa," Marinette whispered to her fellow wife covering her mouth with her fan. Karissa rolled her eyes, her gaze going back to the stage

"I just found it odd how the talentless daughter of the Nightshade family seems to be popular Among the men," Karissa said, her tone bitter. Marinette had an idea she was referring to Alfonso. Although the rumours were getting loud no one dared say it close to the noble concubine.

"They are family, I heard they are rather close and grew up together. During the winter prayers, Sebastian didn’t hold back to defend Abrielle from the dirty gossip." Marinette mentioned. Life was funny; Abrielle, who always thought she was alone in the fight, had no idea of how Sebastian defended her because of the miscarriage.

He could not stand the rumours; it was among the reasons why he suggested he should start training as the Duke’s heir. He could not stand the hypocrisy and how limited he could speak and readily dropped the temple he worked for years to climb up the ladder.

"Family you say, I guess you didn’t hear the rumours Abrielle was meant to be wedded to Sebastian." Karissa scoffed, she just wanted to say something dirty about the princess. She has her silent resentment.

Marinette was stunned, her eyes flickering. "I had no idea but it’s nothing to mind. Abrielle was the only child of the duke and they needed to secure her place. Since Sebastian was the next in line, they probably felt it best; marriages within sacred families are a bit rare. There was a chance that would be a last resort." Marinette gave her opinion.

Karissa clicked her tongue disappointed Marinette didn’t take the bait. The crowd was roaring as another contender stepped on the stage. "Here comes the tyrant of the family." Karissa sneered, her eyes going to the tall, domineering figure of Cedric Von Drakkar.

His dark hair shone under the light as his gold eyes scanned the crowd until he found his little ginger. Eleanor was nice enough to give her a better seat.

He smiled in her direction, and Abrielle’s eyes met his. She was stunned by the smile and her cheeks went red. Why was he being so cheesy today? Her eyes went to Callista, who saw the exchange; the priestess was sitting a few rows in front of her.

" He must be smiling at her," she muttered, too stubborn to accept the simple truth that Cedric might be more interested in her than the female lead of the story because it wasn’t possible he was paying more attention to her. She was the female lead, and Abrielle was the unloved wife.

The opposite gates opened and the abomination that Cedric was to fight was released. Its deafening roar echoed in the arena. He unsheathed his sword and waited for the ghoul to attack him.

The ghoul had a humanoid form, rotting skin and a shrunken form. It dashed before Cedric, moving at an unusual speed, but it didn’t matter to the first prince.

Just like a blur, no one even saw it in a single movement, the ghoul met its end. The crowd burst into a roar; he had made history again. Cedric had a smirk on his face; his eyes glanced at Abrielle, wondering at the reaction on his face.

Cedric froze; the ghoul blood was splattering around while Cedric stared at Abrielle, whose face had gone completely blank, staring at blank space. She seemed scared.
