Chapter 258: The nightmare that haunts her

Chapter 258: The nightmare that haunts her

It was a long day. After Cedric finished handling the ghouls and making his way to the palace, he was drained from the battle.

It took longer than he expected, he had no idea so many ghouls were wandering close to the capital. The castle had gotten quiet, and the festivities had already dwindled. There were the sights of some drunks, an annoying sight popular during the spring festival.

Aside from Alfonso, this was one of the reasons Cedric preferred that Abrielle didn’t wander around much since she had a talent for drawing trouble to herself.

Cedric walked down the silent hallway, his footsteps echoing with the midnight breeze that blew through the curtains over the rattling windows.

The lights flicker a bit. His eyes finally caught sight of the room assigned to him, recognizing two of his knights positioned around the door. Evelyn was temporarily staying in the room next door to be at Abrielle’s service and beck and call.

It was very late by now he was sure Cassandra was already asleep.

"Welcome back, Your Highness." The guards simultaneously greeted him. Cedric nodded at them, too lazy to give a verbal reply.

The door was pulled open and he went inside. The sounds of the crackling fire echoed along with something that left him stunned.

Crying sounds. He was initially stunned by the sounds striking close to the door but quickly snapped out when his brain reminded him it was Abrielle who was crying.

"Abrielle," He called out her name but there was no response. The snubs didn’t stop, her heart beating speeding up each second. He didn’t want to touch her with his bloody clothes, but he could not stay away.

He got to the bedside, his gaze fell on her, and it felt like his heart was stabbed by a million daggers. Abrielle was curled into a ball and crying. Her face was already stained with tears.

"No, no...it can’t end ... Cedric..." Her voice broke as she cried. Cedric could not hold back himself anymore. "Abrielle," he called out again, tapping her lightly on the shoulder

There was no reaction, she was asleep. "Why...no.." she muttered, a heart-wrenching cry left her lips. He could not hold back anymore. Ignoring how dirty he was at the moment, he wanted to pull her from whatever nightmare she was in.

"Please wake up," he pulled her into a hug, rubbing her back. She wasn’t waking up, she only cried louder. "Stop staring at me that way. I never needed this...." She said he was curious about what she was dreaming about.

"Abrielle please wake up. It is just a dream, wake.." he held her tighter saying those words. He did not want to hit her but she was not responding.

"Make it stop, make it stop. I want to go home." Her voice broke, she moaned in. Pain, but it seemed painful..it felt like she was trapped in a nightmare, saying her thoughts out loud.

He pulled her back, "Please come back. I am here." Cedric didn’t know why, but his heart ached when she said she wanted to go home. He knew she wasn’t the home she was crying for. A part of his heart told him, he was probably the monster tormenting her in her dream.

"Abrielle please listen to me. It is just a dream. Everything will be fine." He tried to call out, but she was trembling in his arms, crying more profusely.

"Abrielle.. Abrielle... Please I will be the home you miss." He didn’t know what prompted him to say those words. She started to struggle in his arms but his hold tightened. He didn’t let go.

There was this ache in his heart that didn’t stop. He was lost, confused about whether he should get help or just hold her. Abrielle stopped struggling but she was still trembling slightly.

Her breath was haggard. He felt her grip his shirt. He didn’t wear armour to face the ghoul. Armours were not his thing, and he only wore them for ceremonial purposes or when at war because they slowed down his movements.

Her breath hitched while she was struggling to breathe. "Cedric," he heard her call his name but there was something about the way she called him. Pain laced in her voice. Abrielle buried her head in his chest still crying and trembling.

"Abrielle, thank the goddess you are back. You were crying in your dream." Cedric could barely say hugging her tightly. She didn’t stop crying.

"It’s fine now, whatever it was, it’s just a dream and can’t haunt you here." He tried to make her relax. Only if he knew what haunts her was him. Maybe he knew but didn’t want to accept it.

Cedric was drawing soothing circles at her back, her eyes going dry from tears that had already drenched his shirt. "It’s fine now, please stop crying... Everything will be fine." He just kept on talking hoping she would stop crying.

"It felt so real. I don’t want it to happen." He heard her mumble, her voice shaking.

"I am sure it will never happen. It’s just your head playing games with your mind." His voice was reassuring how she wished she could hold on to them.

"It is not that easy. You won’t understand." She shook her head refusing to listen to the sweet lies.

"I know it might be hard. Maybe we should talk about it to find a solution. Do you want to talk about it?" He suggested and she froze in his hand. She could not tell him. How was she going to say the world as you see it is a book and I am the reason your life is messed up. To cream the cake he was destined to kill her

There was no way she could say that. "Never mind. I am just exhausted. I am tired and too scared to sleep." She refused to answer. Cedric sighed this was going to be one of her numerous secrets. Who didn’t have those, but it felt like hers were something even he could imagine.

"Maybe try going back to sleep, I will be here the entire night." He weakly said.
