Chapter 256: Unrest at the outskirts

Cedric’s brows furrowed in confusion hearing what Eleanor planned on doing. "Where did you hear this from?" Cedric asked, a vacuum surrounded by magic, making it impossible for anyone to eavesdrop on their conversation.

"One of our ears in the queen’s quarters heard her speaking to Astrid the night before the first day of the duel," Elias explained, Cedric felt a headache coming due to this news. This was going to be a sticky situation to handle without a doubt.

"She wants to use the Nightshade family against me," Cedric muttered; he clicked his tongue in disgust, imagining how Rebecca would play according to Eleanor’s music to give her an excuse to hate him.

"Presumably, that’s the plan; your marriage to the holy lady Abrielle is a threat to her and her ambition of securing Lucian as the next king. They want to have the absolute majority by getting rid of your allies." Elias explained that politics always made Cedric tired. Just thinking about it gave me a headache.

"We will just have to keep a close eye on Eleanor for now." Elias nodded at the instructions. Elias and Cedric were about to bring an end to their conversation when Cedric’s eyes caught sight of Axel running towards their side.

"Your Highness, there is an emergency." The knight said in an urgent tone. Elias and Cedric halted a bit wary about what the knight had to say

"This better be good", Cedric sneered; he kind of had an idea of what this emergency might be.

"There have been sightings of Ghouls on the outskirts. Word just got to the king now." Axel was feasibly stressed; Cedric could already guess this was bad.

"They are reacting to the high-ranking appearance," Elias stated the obvious. The ghouls were drawn to the capital after sensing the presence of a high-ranking ghoul.

"Don’t tell me Kaiden left this task for me." Cedric hissed and Axel went silent, Intimidated by Cedric. That was exactly what happened, Kaiden felt there was no need to stop the festival and sent the show off to handle everything.

"Did something catch your tongue?" The prince sneered. Axel cleared his throat before nervously parting his lips. "The king said you should handle it yourself."

"Should I get the men ready?" Elias asked, sensing Cedric’s mood taking an obvious downward swing.

"Is that a question? Go ahead," Cedric instructed, then Elias left immediately to get on rounding Cedric’s knight squad.

"I will get your horses ready, your highness." Axel made an excuse to leave; he could not stand the strong presence that was around Cedric. "Whatever, don’t take long."

As soon as those words left Cedric’s lips Axel was long gone. Cedric looked in the direction of the Arena where cheers were coming from. A grin on his face despite being in a horrible mood.

"I guess I won’t be back by dusk. This is just perfect." Cedric clicked his tongue in annoyance.

The sky was dark, the stars twinkling. It was a pleasant night. Another banquet was being held in the palace to host the guests of the festival.

Only a few knew of the battle going on on the outskirts of the forest. Even Abrielle had no idea of it.

The palace was jolly. Unfortunately, the first prince’s wife was not part of the celebration. Rather, she didn’t have the energy for it.

After spending the majority of the day asleep, she spent her night reading a book by the fireplace while periodically glancing at the windows. It was a peaceful night, a bit too peaceful for Abrielle. It left her a bit worried, too.

While sleeping, she had a nightmare she couldn’t remember exactly, but it made her jolt from the bed. Her first thoughts were Cedric but she didn’t feel there was a need to worry until it got dark and he was nowhere to be seen

Evelyn wouldn’t give her an answer and kept on steering from the conversation. "I don’t have a reason to be worried. Or do I?" Abrielle asked herself, keeping the book she was trying to read. It was a geographic book about neighbouring kingdoms.

Abrielle had to be certain it was how she envisioned, and not so shockingly, there were a lot of differences. It made her doubt if this was indeed the book she wrote at times.

The door screeched against the floor making creaking sounds that drew Abrielle’s attention to the door. A figure stepped in, Abrielle’s eyes dulled immediately her already bad mood plummeting.

"Cedric," a sweet feminine voice that was alluring and provoked your urge to protect, at least that was the effect it had on others. To Abrielle this voice made her skin crawl.

"He isn’t here," Abrielle answered, startling the silver-haired priestess at the door to hear a Feminine voice coming from her.

Callista’s attention drew in the direction of voice until it fell on the slender figure seated by the fireplace. "Abrielle," she gasped.

"In the flesh. I was wondering if the priestess doesn’t know how to knock." Abrielle retorted. She tried her best to keep a calm expression, but she was ticked off by the fact Callista came in without knocking.

Was she and Cedric this familiar? Secondly, what happened to the knight who was meant to be waiting at her door? Evelyn had left to get her a night snack.

"Sorry, but I was not expecting to see you here, but..." Callista didn’t finish her statement. "Since Cedric isn’t back I will leave." She added

"Wait," Abrielle stopped Callista. The priestess glanced at Abrielle, a bit wary of the princess. "I don’t care what kind of relationship you have with Cedric, but next time, try to knock. I am sure you don’t want scandals." Abrielle warned, she had more to say but felt it was better she kept it to herself. Callista felt like scoffing hearing this from Abrielle the queen of scandals.

"I am sorry for any misunderstanding. I was anxious after Cedric disappeared immediately after his match and forgot my manners," Callista explained; it seemed like an excuse, but Abrielle picked up something.

"He disappeared," she repeated, the bad feeling growing in her guts. She had no idea Cedric was sent to the outskirts.

"Yes, during his match, a high rank appeared, but Cedric defeated it with ease. I was worried and tried to find him later but he was gone. So I thought he would be back by now."
