Chapter 238: She is not jealous
The candles flickered lightly, illuminating the dark hallway; the supposed door to Cedric’s room was open. A familiar voice Abrielle recognized as Callista’s echoing. She seemed to be concerned about Cedric who decided on skipping out on the festivities.
"I am not in the mood to listen to any two-faced noble for now." His voice answered; light footsteps followed, and soon Callista’s image emerged from the door.
"Does this have anything to do with...". Callista was about to ask a question but was interrupted by Cedric’s groaning sound. She was facing the door and Abrielle could guess Cedric was standing at the entrance.
"I need to rest, work has been piling up lately." He answered and the Priestess finally relented. "Try to have a good night’s rest; I will send some herbal tea later to help with the stress." She suggested acting like the sweet Callista who was just filled with so much sweetness.
One of the reasons Cedric fell for her was the genuine kindness he showed her. She was not pretentious like everyone around him. Cedric mistook that kindness for love and grew obsessed with it. Callista was kind because she saw her past in him, a broken orphan, and felt she could help the gap.
"You don’t have to, I am honestly just fine and need a bit of rest." He tried to reject but Callista was never the one to accept a no.
"I will be back later." She stubbornly said she was among the few people that could argue with Cedric. Their interactions were sweet and just like how it was in the book. It left a bitter taste in Abrielle’s mouth who watched silently with her face scrunched up.
"You never listened," the prince sighed in defeat, making Callista smile sweetly, her eyes sparkling. "Someone has to look out for you. I can’t have my investigating partner fall sick." She chimed then closed the door. Callista was smiling sweetly, her eyes darted to the side where she saw Abrielle standing.
Her smile got wider, she nodded at the princess and left in the other direction. Abrielle sighed and then slowly approached the door; she knew nothing was going on between Cedric and Callista that was romantic.
Although Cedric had feelings he did not aggressively show his interest until after the spring festival he saw Lucian confess to Callista. He was scared of losing the woman he loved to his brother, but it was too late because they were meant for each other.
Cedric then enters his full villainous phase, his obsession leading him blindly.
Abrielle stood at the door, she reached out on the intricately carved wooden door to knock gently. "Cedric, it’s Abrielle. Can I come in?" She asked. After knocking, there was no reply.
"Cedric, Are you alright? I missed you at the banquet and haven’t seen you since the duel." She repeated knocking more aggressively; the knocking sound echoed down the hall, and there was no reply again. She was sure he heard her but Cedric was ignoring her.
She reached out to knock again, but the clanking sounds of metal interrupted her, drawing her attention to the direction she came through.
It was a knight from a random duchy and he was wasted on alcohol so early in the night he fell on the floor. Abrielle Ignored him, she wasn’t interested in some drunk knight
She reached out to knock again but the drunk ass knight was particularly distracting. She hissed stomping her feet. He was wobbling, crashing against the wall as he strode down the hall.
Abrielle clicked her tongue, "Cedric I know you are there. Stop ignoring me and open the bloody door. " She barked, knocking more aggressively. She hated the fact he was ignoring her.
She stopped knocking, why was she bothered he didn’t want to see her? This was what she wanted by the way. He should keep on ignoring her and she would ignore his existence. Is it not like if she suddenly disappeared, he would care?
"Fine, you can suit yourself. Have a good night, Cedric. I will be heading back to the party. At least, I will find someone there who is more than ready to appreciate my attention." She snapped, sounding pretty jealous, different from the word she meant. She could imagine Cedric rolling his eyes.
She stomped her feet; grabbing the layers of her dress, she turned to leave. She crashed against something making her back away. Her head hurt badly, "watch where you are going drunk ass." She snapped, rubbing her forehead.
Her eyes snapped at the drunk knight she bumped into. His face was flushed red, a sharp frown on his face "You should be the one I say that to. Are you freaking blind?" He snapped at her. Abrielle snorted, not in the mood for his episode.
She dismissed him, walking by, but the drunk knight didn’t like the fact a woman was looking down on him. This was a society led by men, and only the high-ranking noble women or a few exceptions like, Callista had a say.
The knight was too drunk to realize that Abrielle was someone from a powerful background; it was more like he did not care. "How dare you talk to me that way, woman." He snapped at her grabbing Abrielle’s arm.
Abrielle was stunned by the sudden development. He was mad that she could recognize and knew this was not going to end well." Let go of me," she barked, trying to shrug him off, but his hold only got tighter.
Her dress had a thin strap, and the sleeve exposed her arm, which he held; he was already bruising her, causing Abrielle to grit her teeth in pain.
"You better let go or you will regret this later." She warned him. Her warning went through deaf ears. He scoffed at her thinking she was just bluffing.
He yanked her forward, adding more pressure to his hold; Abrielle’s eyes watered, unable to endure the pain. "Just empty words. You are completely helpless, and I can do whatever I want, including having some fun." His eyes drew from her face down to her cleavage that was exposed, his annoying frown turning to a cheesy smile that made Abrielle’s stomach churn.
