Chapter 237: Finding Cedric

A banquet was bustling, the chandelier sparkled and everyone was having a good time. Murmurs were going on about the duel earlier today with the first topic on everyone’s lips being the spectacle Alfonso caused.

Abrielle felt like shrinking knowing she was the topic on everyone’s lips. She was getting too much attention a villainess should not be having.

She actually wanted to skip out on this event with the excuse she was feeling under the weather, but that would make her look more guilty.

"Elle," she heard someone call her name in a rather angry tone, she closed her eyes to take a long breath before turning to face Rebecca’s angry face. Her mother was mad.

"Mother, how have you been?" She nervously said. She had been avoiding her parents all day. She had deliberately left in another carriage to avoid seeing them. Rebecca was resilient.

"I am still alive, fortunately, but I don’t think I would for long, thanks to you." Rebecca dramatically said in a hushed tone which didn’t hide how angry she was

"How can you say such a Thing? I would never do something that can harm you. Where is the Father? I am sure he would be worried?" She replied, her eyes darting around the room while she acted oblivious to what Rebecca was trying to say.

Rebecca understood Abrielle’s games; she grabbed her daughter’s hand and pulled her to a more discrete area for them to talk. "Your father is being held up with official matters," Rebecca grumbled.

They got to an empty hallway, the music faded in the background. Abrielle knew there was no way for her to escape. Rebecca stopped and then turned towards her daughter. She was trying to read through her eyes, but lately, it felt like her daughter had changed.

"Abrielle come out clean. Are you having an affair with Alfonso?" Rebecca asked, going straight to the point.

Abrielle sighed, "No, I am not having an affair with Alfonso. He is just playing games." She answered. It was the truth, but at this point, it didn’t seem like anyone would believe her.

Rebecca scoffed at Abrielle’s words; she was older and had seen things like this happen so many times. A lot of noble wives had affairs. It was common, no one really cared as long as it didn’t get to the mouth of those grumpy gossips.

Abrielle’s rumoured affair was getting bigger than gossip. It was hard to deny it when Alfonso kept on giving them a reason to talk.

"Games, it doesn’t look like games to me at all. I know what I see, Abrielle; the Von Drakkar family isn’t one you should..." Rebecca suddenly went quiet when they heard footsteps approaching them. Abrielle glanced over, her eyes sparkled once she saw Elias among the group of knights.

Rebecca gritted her teeth, her worry for Abrielle was genuine. In her thoughts, she imagined Abrielle had gotten into an affair with Alfonso due to her emotionally unavailable husband. To seek the attention Cedric was not ready to give; unbeknownst to her, the princess didn’t even want much attention from Cedric in the first place.

It was like she had just seen her saviour; she left her mother’s side, not giving Rebecca a chance to complain.

"Your Highness," Elias gasped, seeing the princess come his way. He has a bit of conflicting emotions. He knew for sure that Abrielle was not having an affair with Alfonso. None that he knows of, he was always watching her during the period Cedric was away.

But you never know if Abrielle was able to find a way to manoeuvre his surveillance and find a loophole.

"Elias, have you by any chance seen Prince Cedric?" She asked Elias, surprising him with her genuine concern in her voice. Maybe this was just a big misunderstanding he wondered. It wasn’t his place to help his liege to solve his marital issues.

"I have," Elias simply answered. The knights he was walking with had already gone ahead leaving just him with Abrielle.

"You have?" The princess was more surprised because she was certain she didn’t catch a glimpse of Cedric in the banquet hall. "I didn’t even see his shadow after searching for him." She added.

This pleasantly surprised the knight not expecting his lady to be looking for the prince. "He isn’t attending the banquet and decided to stay in the room assigned to him," Elias explained.

Abrielle nodded in understanding. She was aware of the fact that all duel participants were made to stay in the palace during the event.

"Can you show me the way to his room?" She asked Elias. She didn’t know why, but she felt disturbed about Cedric’s behaviour; she found it hard to ignore. Elias’s eyes flickered contemplating if he should listen to the princess.

Abrielle understood how he felt and could easily deduce that Cedric might have instructed against it. He didn’t want to see her. "You don’t have to show me to the door. Just leaving halfway would be enough." She tried to convince Elias.

He sighed conceding to her. "Fine, I will take you halfway, but if the prince asks, say you found out by coincidence." On meeting an agreement Abrielle left with Elias.

She gave her mother a weak smile before she disappeared at the sharp end of the hallway.

They got to a more seclusive part of the castle; here, barely any music got to the walls. Abrielle was curious if every participant was given similar accommodation despite their status. After walking a few minutes down the desolate hallway, Elias dropped.

"This is as far as I can go. His Highness’s room is the 4th door on the left down this path ." He explained to the princess.

"Thank you for the help. I appreciate it," Abrielle extended her gratitude to Elias. "It was my honour." With that being said she continued down the path, her footsteps echoing.

A door was abruptly pushed open, the same open Elias described as Cedric’s room, followed by a familiar female voice. "You should at least come down for a bit." The voice said with concern. Abrielle stopped waiting for the person to step out.
