Chapter 235: A rose for the princess

Chapter 235: A rose for the princess

Abrielle got back to her seat; just as expected, the battle was almost over, and only a few monsters were left. Her thoughts strayed to the conversation she had with Bernice.

She was also curious about the foreigner that helped her that day. She didn’t know his face or name. She wondered if he was still in Vitalis remembering the conversation he had with Eleanor where he mentioned that he might hang around longer to see Cedric.

Bernice arrived back at the booth; she spared Abrielle a glance before heading over to her mother’s side, where Callista was also seated.

Astrid was not here; she was with her husband’s family, which was a military family. Her husband, being the dukedom heir, was a general.

He was also participating in the Rose duel and was among the last standing. The final monster fell, and a loud trumpet blast rang, indicating the end of the battle. Abrielle’s eyes went back to the stage, which was covered in blood and littered all over with corpses.

After the battle, the survivors were cheered by the audience. It was the moment most of the maidens were waiting for the handing over of the red roses. A single red rose was given to them as they exited the fight arena into the crowd.

Covered in blood and sweat they approached the ladies they fancied. There were faint giggles among the crowd. The first one that climbed up was Lucian, he had a faint smile on his face as he walked up the stairs.

Abrielle remembered this moment, and how nervous Callista felt thinking he was bringing the rose instead. He gave it to Bernice instead.

Just like the plot, Lucian walked towards the booth. He smiled at Callista, making her heart skip a beat, then presented the rose to Bernice.

The priestess’s gaze dulled with a bitter smile on her face. She thought she was the only one in love with him unbeknownst to him the reason Lucian never gave her the red rose was because he wanted it to be extra special when he gave her the gold rose

.

"Thank you, brother," Bernice chimed at Lucian. "It is nothing compared to other roses your various admirers will give you." He teased then placed a kiss on her hand before retreating.

They seemed like loving siblings. "You seem pretty engrossed staring at them Abrielle," the villainess heard someone chimed from her side. She was so focused on reliving a scene from the book she failed to notice someone was approaching her.

"Sebastian," Abrielle was surprised to see her cousin, who was also her former match, was by her side holding a red rose. A lovely smile graced her lips as she accepted it.

Sebastian’s silver hair was stained with some blood that also splashed on his silver armour; he still looked like a knight in charming armour.

"Thank you, I wasn’t expecting this." She lied, she knew Sebastian would give her his rose. It was the only one she got in the original novel.

"It’s nothing," Sebastian chimed. Abrielle gave him her other hand, different from the one Cedric kissed. On closer look, Sebastian was truly charming. She almost had nosebleeds.

Although it was okay for cousins to get married at this time, Abrielle, coming from modern society, was not okay with it. The original Abrielle never saw Sebastian in that way, but she doesn’t know how Sebastian saw her. All she knew was that he truly cared for the villainess.

"I appreciate the rose, but I am sure a lot of ladies would want a rose from the next Duke of Vesper." Sebastian smiled at her words as he moved away.

"Unfortunately my dear cousin is the only lady I know here. Wish me luck Abrielle." Sebastian retreats back to the stage to take the exit to the waiting area.

After Sebastian left, Abrielle felt something was wrong with the utmost, murmurs were going around, and it felt like everyone was looking in a particular direction.

Abrielle followed their gaze, her heart skipping a beat once she saw him with her gut twisting. The rose duel had a rule, the lady could not reject the rose.

He was walking towards her, she had a strong urge to run away but she had a feeling he might go after her. Why was Alfonso giving her this much attention? He had a lot of admirers and yet he made it his favourite hobby to put her in the most uncomfortable conditions.

Alfonso’s eyes met her as he walked forward like a knight. A smirk hung on his lips, eyes were on him, and everyone was curious about who he was going to give his rose to. Their gossiping stomachs were already coming up with several stories.

Alfonso’s eyes searched for her in the booth. Abrielle was in a hidden spot, but he still found her. He smiled teasingly at her, Alfonso stopped in front of her. "A rose for the princess," he said, handing the rose to her.

Her stomach squeezed, "You will be the death of me Alfonso." She said with a forced smile, reluctantly accepting the red rose with which they had been removed.

"That doesn’t sound like a bad idea, I can’t wait to see how it will look in your ginger hair." Alfonso chimed, Abrielle was getting sick of his smile. Yet she had to keep on with his games. He pulled the stalk from her hand to place in the braids on her hair.

Time seemed to have slowed, "red is indeed the best colour for you." It was a compliment that Abrielle didn’t want to accept.

Away from Abrielle’s seat, a particular pair of gold eyes were still searching for her. He has been searching since the beginning of the match. Giving odd glances at the audience. He even checked the Nightshade booth but she wasn’t there.

A single rose was in his hand, his appearance spotless as a single drop of blood didn’t touch his armour. Cedric felt something was weird. He listened to the hush tones around him and soon understood why when he found the sneaky gaze.

He saw them and he smiled. Things were getting interesting.
