Chapter 234: True Monsters
Chapter 234: True Monsters
The cheer got louder as the knights fought their way to victory. The goal was not to have the highest kills but to survive till the end of the battle.
Abrielle had never seen Cedric in battle before and what she saw left her breathless. He was indeed a monster getting rid of every annoying pest with a single swing of his sword.
Lucian was not lagging behind; he was the star of the show. Abrielle was certain that this wasn’t their true potential yet made it feel like the others were a joke in their presence.
One thing that left her surprised was Alfonso. He was a side character created in the book and was actually known to be the weakest in combat amongst the brothers yet he was far from weak.
It felt like she was watching a show-off battle between the brothers. One more person that intrigued her interest was Sebastian; she had no idea a former priest was capable of wielding a sword so perfectly.
The original novel described him as the best candidate for the dukedom. It turned out he indeed merited the position. Honestly, Sebastian was not a bad catch; the best way to describe him was the mysterious Duke of the North in most transmigration stories.
Blood spilled, and a lot of monsters fell. Slowly, the number started to decline, with less than half of the number left.
Abrielle got sick of watching the gore, she slowly got on her feet to make a short visit to the powder room. She was getting sick of the strong stench of blood and could not understand why the audience enjoyed such a scene.
The door to the powder room opened, and the princess walked over to the mirror to watch her appearance. She had a very strong urge to throw up but her stomach was empty.
"He is a monster," she muttered. After seeing a glimpse of Cedric’s strength she felt completely stupid for thinking she could stand a chance against him.
Her only chance was running away before the wedding and she blew it. Abrielle’s hands clenched, conflicting emotions running through her. She could not give up.
It was not yet over, she still had some time before Eleanor brought up the accusations that she was being the tea party poisoning. She had just a week left. What was she going to do?
Her body was weak thanks to the poison that got into her system. Why did she bother saving Callista when, one way or the other, she was going to die in this messed-up plot?
Abrielle’s thoughts were interrupted by the abrupt sound of the door being opened. Her eyes flew to the door; it was Princess Bernice and Eleanor looked alike as some described because of their identical raven black hair and grey eyes.
"Your Highness," Abrielle mumbled, straightening up her posture. Bernice’s gaze weirdly softened on seeing Abrielle.
"Abrielle, it’s a bit unexpected seeing you. I thought no one would be hiding here." The princess mentioned walking to Abrielle’s side; she turned to the mirror and then opened her purse to pull out some cosmetics.
"What makes you think I am hiding?" Abrielle asked curious about Bernice’s words. "We both hate the gore of the battle and find shelter here."
"You also find the battle unsettling, I thought I was the only one who did." Abrielle chirped in; she sighed, then grabbed her bag about to leave.
"It’s unsettling seeing the kind of person my brothers truly are. I wonder why any woman would want to go to battle," Bernice said, her tone sounding troubled.
"They have to be strong for the kingdom," Abrielle replied logically, Bernice seemed troubled about something. Abrielle kind of had an idea why. "More like strong enough to slit each other’s throat." The room fell silent after Bernice’s words.
Bernice bit her lips; she had misspoken, but honestly, ever since she knew how gruesome the succession battle was, she was worried about her brother Lucian. Her earliest memories were always about how Lucian pushed himself to the end and here she was talking with the wife of the man that was Lucian’s biggest challenge.
Bernice broke into a nervous laugh, "Sorry, I didn’t mean it that way. I wonder if I will get a rose today." She blurted. Abrielle gave her a stiff smile.
"I am sure the beautiful princess has a lot of admirers and you will get a ton of flowers." Abrielle cheered up the princess. She has nothing to say that could help Bernice. She also had her battle to fight.
"The thought of that does sound lovely but I doubt the one I wish a flower from would give me one ." She said. Abrielle’s eyes sparkled; Bernice had someone she fancied.
"You will never know. I have to head back to the auditorium. I have been gone for a while now." Bernice nodded at Abrielle. The villainess turned around to leave. She opened the door to step out when she heard Bernice speak again.
It was something that she wasn’t expecting. "Thank you for saving me during the masked ball. Alfonso explained how you risked your life, I am deeply honoured." Bernice expressed her gratitude; it was something Abrielle was not expecting, especially not from the proud princess.
"I am glad you are doing well now. We are family, it was the least I could do." Abrielle replied without turning back, a soft smile graced her lips.
"I guess I will have to look out for you then. By the way are you by any chance close to the gentleman that assisted you?" She asked, Abrielle glanced over her shoulders to see Bernice’s cheeks that had a faint red tint.
"Is he by any chance the one you expect a rose from?" Abrielle teasingly asked. Bernice’s eyes gave her out. "No, it’s not like that. I just want to thank him personally for his help." She immediately denied it. Abrielle gave her a knowing smile before turning.
"Unfortunately, I can’t help; I don’t even know what he looks like behind the mask." She chimed before walking out of the powder room back to the auditorium. The crowd was still going wild; by now, the battle should almost be over.
