Chapter 233: Battle Royale
’ What just happened here?! ’ Abrielle’s thoughts screamed. The arena was filled with live, the crowd cheering as almost everyone was hyped about that chaos that was about to unleash itself.
The arena was divided based on class, the commoners, and the high society, which was divided based on the level of importance. The highest families included the Nightshade family. They were the pillars of Darconia.
The highest was always the Von Drakkar family, the royal family. Abrielle sat with the royal family, and Eleanor was nice enough this time to reserve a seat for her. It was not too surprising Callista had a seat with the royal family seated by Eleanor’s side.
Abrielle didn’t care if her seat was a bit inconvenient at the back; she just wanted today to be all over.
Her eyes went over to the Nightshade booth, and Abrielle was surprised to see her mother waving at her. She returned the wave, seated in the Nightshade booth were Rebecca, Pierre, and Mikhail, the high pope whose presence was mandatory during the spring festival.
Her parents had arrived a few days earlier than Mikhail and his wife Ava. They were Sebastian’s parents. The Nightshade booth was more comfortable than that seat she was given, and her mother had kept a seat for her, but Abrielle dared not go over before another controversy about how Alfonso had successfully caused a wedge in her marriage.
Her eyes drew back to the centre of it all; she could barely recognize the contenders due to the sunlight that was reflecting off to her eyes. Her seat didn’t have proper coverage.
"I hope I don’t get blind before the end of today," Abrielle complained.
Back on the stage, all the participating knights were already gathered, and it wasn’t surprising to see the 3 princes participating this year.
The first day of the Rose duel was not one-on-one duels; instead, it was more like a battle royale setting where all the knights were made to fight a horde of monsters. Then, anyone still standing when the last monster fell is the victor of the battle.
It was a rather gory sight in which most participants were left almost half dead. Immediately a participant falls they are moved away from the chaos for their good to reduce casualties of the battles.
How it was done was that the participants were arranged in small groups of three. Immediately, if a member of a group was injured, the able remaining ones would escort them to the safe zone until it was left to the last member. The last member then has a choice to survive to the end or withdraw.
That’s why a minimum of three members per family was required to join the games. As expected, one of the strongest groups was the Von Drakkar group.
The main group was made up of individual princes and two of their most trusted knights. There was also an option for all three princes to form a group but they didn’t trust each other that much.
The loud trumpet sounds echoed silencing the auditorium. Then Kaiden got to his feet to give his speech. Since it was a large auditorium, there were some sound-magnifying artefacts and magic used to make sure everyone heard the king’s opening speech.
Abrielle didn’t care about whatever Kaiden was spouting and continued to search Among the participants until she spotted him standing tall amongst the men.
Cedric’s attention was not on the audience, but rather, he was speaking to the men of his party. Cedric’s team comprised Elias and one more knight Abrielle could not recognize, but she was sure she had seen him around the castle a couple of times.
She was not worried about Cedric; she was sure his team survived this round.
Cedric was listening to Elias, who was giving him a detailed breakdown of the other teams, while his eyes searched around the contenders.
His eyes fell on Alfonso who gave Cedric a challenging smirk. "It will be fun to teach some people about battle." Cedric sneered, Elias heard but didn’t know who he was talking about
Alfonso might not be as strong as his brothers but he was still a seasoned fighter who had his fair share of battle. He went to his first war three years ago at the age of 17, the average age expected of a prince, unlike Cedric, who was exposed to the hardship of war at the tender age of 13. He was barely a teenager.
Eleanor used the excuse of him being bigger than his peers to send the boy off. Just like Cedric, most of the participants had a handkerchief tied to their arm; the majority were given by their lovers or even mothers.
Cedric proudly wore Abrielle’s embroidered despite it being barely manageable but it still meant a lot to the prince. It was the first ever handmade gift given to him, he wondered if she was aware of that
It was hard to know what she was trying to make his closest guess was that it was a dragon
"MAY THE BATTLE BEGIN!!!!!" a loud thunderous sound echoed.
"Here we go, Your Highness." Axel, who was by Cedric’s side, said, clutching his sword tightly. "Try not to get injured." Cedric chirped his eyes finally darting around the arena
He Instinctively searched the Von Drakkar booth to find her. His eyes fell on a pair of blue eyes, but it wasn’t the one he was searching for. Callista sensed Cedric’s gaze and waved back at him
The prince drew his gaze back to the gates that were being lifted with a horde of monsters running in. "Where did she go?" He asked himself wondering which hole Abrielle was hiding.
"Let’s go!!" He instructed his men as they charged forward. He would worry about Abrielle once this battle was over. Back in the auditorium, Abrielle, who was in a conspicuous area, saw when Cedric searching around the crowd until his gaze fell on Callista.
"I guess he would find her," she sighed. Her eyes keenly watched the battle. "I guess he doesn’t need a good luck wish." She scoffed seeing how Cedric was brutally ending the life of every monster that came close to him.
