Chapter 230: The Rose Duel

Finally, the time of the year that was looked forward to by all citizens of Vitalis, both the commoners and nobles, arrived.

It was the annual spring festival, a week-long celebration that marked the beginning of the Farming season and a new year in Darconia after surviving a long winter.

The streets were dazzling as there was an array of activities, from small get-togethers to the spring banquet that would be held on the last day of the festival.

What made this festival more dazzling was not the food, or the bright colours or drinks but the infamous rose duel. Vigilant knights were made to fight monsters and duel against each other, the winner being given a red rose after each battle, which he was to present to his beloved.

This romantic expression was one of the most popular ways men proposed to their beloved. Every girl wanted a red rose, and at the end of the duel, on the fifth day, the victor would be given a golden rose he is to present to his beloved.

The girl who gets the gold rose would be rewarded by the queen with the title queen of spring and colour, and of course, it came with other rewards. Every girl’s dream was to get the gold rose, but unfortunately, only one girl could get it.

The rose duel was an iconic event in the original novel, Lucian had come to the realization he had feelings for the bright priestess and fought against every odds to get Callista the gold rose.

The crazy part was that he never gave her any of his red roses, so Callista was stunned on the last day of the duel when Lucian presented her with the gold rose.

Another highlight of the event was the solidification of the rivalry between Cedric and Lucian. Of course, the second male lead, who was actually the real villain of the story, also wanted a gold rose to present to Callista, but he lost to Lucian.

Cedric was consumed by the envy he felt for his younger brother, who had everything he wanted, from the crown prince title to the only girl Cedric actually loved.

In other words, the rose duel was an unforgettable experience, and our dear villainess wondered if it would be the same.

The arena was packed, and cheers could be heard in the distance. Abrielle was on a carriage with her parents to the arena, and dear goddess Rebecca was the queen of dirt talking. The duchess always had something to say about everything as they rode to the middle of the mainland where the arena was packed.

"This year Eleanor seemed to have gone a bit over the top with the decorations," Rebecca commented. Abrielle was watching the streets through the window. It was breathtaking from the intricate architecture that gave a mix of ancient European particularly Russian style mixed with Persian style.

It looked way better in spring, the flowers were finally blooming. Abrielle caught sight of the decorations her mother was nitpicking about. Honestly, it looked lovely.

"I think the decorations are fine, Mother," Abrielle mentioned, drawing her attention back to her mother.

Rebecca gave a disapproving grunt. "What do you know about decorations or fine taste? Your taste in decorations is as bad as your taste in men. I see you and Eleanor both decided to marry into that accursed von Drakkar family. Of course, your taste would be similar." Rebecca scoffed at Abrielle. Disdain written all over her face.

Recently Cedric was always on her lips. She has something to complain about every second, but once Cedric appears, she turns to an approving mother-in-law. Abrielle had a feeling her dear husband might have shaken Rebecca a bit.

"Give it a rest to Cedric already. The deed has already been done, we are married and there is nothing you can do about it." Abrielle stated.

Rebecca humphed then turned her eyes to the window. "The only good thing about him is that he is rich for the meantime before the succession battle starts."

"Rebecca!!" Pierre snapped at Rebecca, she didn’t know when to draw the line.

"What! Is there anything wrong with what I said?" She sneered looking away from her family.

"It isn’t something you can talk about in public and we are technically allies with Cedric." Pierre cautioned Rebecca.

"This is a private discussion within our family, and that aside, there is always a way to escape this marriage. Either Abrielle kills him, which is close to impossible, or she fakes her death, which would be difficult but possible." Rebecca spurted out having no idea what she was saying is not far from that Abrielle wants

"Can we just talk about the rose duel instead?" Pierre cut her off; he didn’t like the idea she was feeding off their daughter.

"There is nothing special about it like I am expecting a rose..." Rebecca’s eyes drew to Abrielle. She then sighed. Remembering a distant memory where Pierre actually won a rose for her.

Abrielle understood her concern, she wasn’t expecting a rose either. Abrielle clutched the bag in her hand before she spoke. "Will the Nightshade family be participating this year?" She asked as the duel was based on noble Families, with both members of the families and their knights participating under their name.

"Sebastian will be leading the family. I plan to make it official that he will be the next duke after the festival. He would be travelling back to Vesper with us." Pierre replied; Abrielle nodded, remembering something similar happened in the original plot. The only rose Abrielle had was from Sebastian, she was given as the former lady of the Nightshade family.

"He already resigned as the priest," Abrielle muttered, as they arrived at the entrance of the arena. She could already spot several flags from different duchies and counties including the royal family flag.

"You can go ahead to the main Arena, I have to see Cedric before the duel." She informed her parents as the carriage came to a slow halt.

"You don’t have to see him; it is not a must ", Rebecca mentioned.

"I know but I have an overdue gift to give him."
