Chapter 229: Scared to her knees
Rebecca’s face went pale. It was a simple question, but it felt like she had heard something forbidden. "She isn’t the only noble born without magic. There are tons of them out there, or are you using it as an excuse to treat my daughter unfairly." Rebecca went into the defence mechanism immediately.
"There we are again, baseless accusations being thrown my way. I asked a simple question because I find it odd that someone from such a sacred bloodline is unable to wield magic ." Cedric remained calm as he watched Rebecca slowly lose it.
"It doesn’t make her any less of a Nightshade." Rebecca barked then her face cracked into a sad smile. "Now I can see, this is the reason why you neglect her because you feel she isn’t worth your attention." She laughed out, Cedric’s expression still remained unchanged
Rebecca was adamant about hiding the fact that Abrielle’s magic was sealed at birth and rather had her known as a talentless noble. It felt like she was hiding something greater.
"I never said anything related to that," he replied. Rebecca’s sharp amber eyes stared keenly at Cedric. She didn’t like the look in his eyes.
"I have ears, Cedric, and I have heard things relating to you and that priestess.." she changed the topic, causing the first priest to frown.
Rebecca still continued, "I don’t know what Abrielle saw in you. If you break my daughter I won’t stop to see you suffer the pain. I am not scared of you, Cedric Von Drakkar, even if you are rumoured to be a demon that curses this land." Rebecca declared her dislike for Cedric just multiplied.
The room seemed to have gotten darker with the lights fading away. Rebecca felt a pressure on her shoulders that made her knees weak. His eyes were still gold, but his presence got stronger. He had been deliberately toning down his presence out of his consideration for Abrielle, but when given an arm, she wanted it whole.
"You are not scared of me." He scoffed at her brave words. Cedric straightened up his back and then walked a few towards her. Rebecca was paralyzed in her seat and shrinking backwards. Why did it feel like a god of death was before her?
"You say I am rumoured to be a god of death; it was a title I earned, and I am proud of that name, Rebecca..." He drawled, each word he said felt like the last she might hear.
She bared her teeth at him, cold sweats covering her forehead. He was overwhelming her by his presence alone. She has seen her fair share of terrifying people but he was on a whole different level. "Threaten me all you can; the Nightshade family isn’t to be intimidated", she burst out, trying her best not to fret.
He smirked at her. "Do I look like I am scared of your family? Take away the temple and Vesper then there is nothing to the Nightshade name." Rebecca’s eyes went wide. He was indirectly threatening her.
"You are threatening to ruin your wife’s family. How could you? " Shock and disbelief were evident in her voice. There was not an ounce of regret on his face saying such things.
Cedric laughed at her, his voice was melodic like an angel but she was sure the man before her was no angel. He never acted like one and always made everyone know he was the demon. Nothing was going to change that fact about him.
Eleanor spread rumours all over Darconia, hoping to ruin Cedric’s reputation, but the first prince could not care any less about the rumours, no matter how bad they were. He was no saint in the first place..
"Dear mother, I don’t make threats but promises. Stay in your lane, Rebecca, and I will stay in mine. Don’t come to bother me with your rubbish again." He warned her. Rebecca’s fingers started to pierce into her palm because of the fright and fear he incited in her being.
Her lips parted but no word left. Cedric didn’t give her any face despite holding her beloved daughter captive. Unknown to her Cedric has been more than tolerable, he actually spared her some second of his time to have a pointless conversation with her
"You are a monster," Rebecca cursed, trying to stand on her shaken legs. "Even my father called me the same. Help yourself to the door. I have much more important things to do." He glances at the door.
Rebecca gritted her teeth at him; she didn’t want you to spend a second more in his presence. Her legs kept on shaking; she could feel his gaze on her back.
Just when she was about to reach for the door Cedric spoke again. "Before I forget, try not to make my wife nervous with your presence. Abrielle is in a delicate situation now, and personally, I would appreciate it if you consider staying in the Nightshade mansion in the city." Cedric mentioned infuriating Rebecca.
All she could think of was that he wanted her away to hide what Abrielle was going through. "She is my daughter and you are not the one...." Her words were cut off when it felt like the air from her lungs was being drained.
She scoffed and then left the room more angry than she was when she came in. The door slammed behind her, and Cedric heard her angry footsteps fade away.
He walked back to his table to grab the glass he was drinking from. The door opened, and a shadowy presence came in. It was one of Cedric’s shadow knights that had been keeping watch at the door.
The prince didn’t glance at the newcomer and continued to enjoy the gin that burned through his throat as he swallowed.
"What are your instructions, your highness?" The night asked. It was his third in command Axel, who accompanied him to Vesper.
"Keep an eye on the Nightshade and get someone to investigate the birth of Abrielle Nightshade." Cedric relayed his instructions. He had a gut feeling he didn’t want to ignore. There were too many mysteries surrounding the little ginger.
"I will get on it immediately," Axel said then disappeared into the shadows.
