Chapter 225: unexpected invite
Abrielle had no idea of Callista’s and Lucian’s unexpected visit. She was busy getting ready for dinner. It was actually the first meal ever they would be having together after her marriage. This would have meant a lot to the original Abrielle, it also meant a lot to her
It was all part of the plan. She took a last look at herself in the Mirror. She wasn’t looking bad at all. "This is fine, how are the preparations for dinner?" Her eyes drew from the mirror to Evelyn who was holding a handful of fabrics.
"It’s going fine, everything will be done soon. The head maid instructed the kitchen to prepare dishes indigenous to Vesper." Evelyn said which was helpful everything was going fine
"Make sure there is a rabbit on the menu, my mother loves roasted rabbits," Abrielle informed Evelyn. She released a breath that was stuck in her throat due to the corset.
"I guess I have to check up on Cedric," her mood plummeted at the thought of seeing him. "His highness is in his study," Evelyn informed her. Abrielle nodded making her way from her room to the first floor where Cedric’s study was located.
The halls were quiet with the rhythmic sounds of her heels clicking against the floor being the only thing that could be heard. On arriving at Cedric’s study, there wasn’t a Guard stationed at the entrance.
Abrielle didn’t find it odd, but something piqued her interest. The door was left slightly ajar. The closer she got to the door, the more she came to the realization Cedric had guests. It was an incoherent mix of a feminine and masculine voice.
Her eyes dulled recognizing the voice immediately, Lucian and Callista. "I am done here," she grumbled, turning around to head back to her room. She didn’t want to have any confrontation with Callista.
She was too exhausted to face the female lead. Walking down the hallway, just before she was about to take a turn, she walk into Rebecca, who was being led by a maid. "Elle is something wrong?" Rebecca asked, concern laced in her voice, sensing there was something off with Abrielle’s mood.
"Mother," Abrielle gasped, she wasn’t expecting to run into Rebecca. From her guess, it seemed like Rebecca was heading to Cedric’s study. Rebecca’s brow was arched at Abrielle, worry evident on her face which still held grace and beauty at the age of 46.
"Everything is fine, Mother; I was just taking a stroll around the castle." She lied trying to avoid the question.
"Are you sure it seems you are coming from Prince Cedric’s study? Did he do something wrong again?" Rebecca was not buying Abrielle’s lies. The key word again in her statement proved how vindictive she was about Cedric
"He didn’t do anything. He has guests over." Abrielle replied.
"I was about to have a word with him. Maybe you should wait or let him know you want to see him." Rebecca continued. Abrielle didn’t want to see Cedric now and just wanted to leave before those doors opened.
Nothing ever goes the way she wants, the door was unceremoniously opened. The creaking sound against the floor drew Abrielle’s and Rebecca’s attention to the door.
It was Callista who was at the door, Rebecca’s eyes flickered with a strange emotion that quickly disappeared. "The guest he had over," Rebecca sneered.
"Abrielle," Callista muttered seeing Abrielle, her hold on the door handle tightening. "Holy Lady Callista," Abrielle replied, addressing Callista by her title.
Rebecca’s face seemed to have gone pale, "holy lady," she repeated in dislike. The only one with that title was Abrielle so she thought.
"Callista is a brave priestess who saved the queen and was honoured with the title holy lady." Abrielle chirped in probably enjoying seeing Rebecca enraged at Callista.
"Eleanor did what?!" Okay, the duchess was mad; she even forgot to address the queen by her title. "Yes, Mother, she did as I said," Abrielle added.
"Does Eleanor know what the title means?" Rebecca asked, Abrielle just shrugged her shoulders. Callista shrank at the door. It looked like she was being bullied by the villainess and her mother which was not far from the truth because that was what was happening.
She clenched her dress, she could not go back inside and was too scared to go forward. "What is going on?" A sharp voice said from behind Callista. The commanding tone was enough to quell Rebecca.
Lucian walked towards the entrance, his eyes darting from Callista to Abrielle. "Nothing that has to do with you. Mother, let’s go have dinner; I am too exhausted for this." Abrielle sneered, annoyed that the male lead arrived to save his maiden in distress. How annoying.
Lucian was stunned by Abrielle’s rude tone, he had never heard her speak that way. Cedric was lurking behind, a deep frown etched on his face. He knew Abrielle must have caused trouble.
"Abrielle are you here for me?" He asked the obvious. "I was about to call you for dinner, but you have a guest. Then I ran into Mother." Abrielle rambled on, tugging her mother’s arm so they could leave. Rebecca was just too stubborn.
Cedric nodded, and then his eyes drew to Callista, who had a rather calm expression but her clenched fist otherwise. "I have to have dinner now, and have a safe ride back." He casually hinted saying leave my property soon. He didn’t like Lucian’s presence here, especially close to Abrielle.
"I am glad you made time on such short notice." Lucian politely replied, not wanting to dwell on the matter for long. This was Abrielle’s home, and they had come uninvited.
"Why don’t they join us for dinner? Pierre and I will be interested in knowing the brave holy lady." Rebecca decided to chirp in, and Abrielle’s eyes snapped at her mother. What was she saying?
"We don’t want to impose," Lucian declined while Callista shrank back. "Please, crown prince, honour the invitation of an old lady. " Rebecca pushed on.
"Mother, it is fine if they don’t want to join us," Abrielle mentioned not liking the idea.
"If the duchess insists, I would love to stay, Lucian. If that is allowed, Cedric." She called out the princes without their title showing how close they were. Callista was showing off.
