Chapter 223: Insufferable brat
Chapter 223: Insufferable brat
Rebecca watched her red angel standing gracefully waiting for her. She was glad she finally saw Abrielle again; she remembered the wedding and the drama that had occurred, which gave her a restless night, wondering why Abrielle did that.
But then her sharp eyes swept over the entrance once more, and her stomach twisted. Cedric wasn’t there. The bastard was not there. She let out a dry laugh that made Pierre’s skin crawl; he knew she was mad.
Rebecca’s lips thinned. "Where is your husband?" Her voice was calm, but Abrielle could hear the storm beneath it. She knew the kind of person her mother was. Rebecca didn’t give a damn that Cedric was the bloodlust demon or whatever. All she knew was the ungrateful jerk who never appreciated her angel.
Abrielle had expected this. She had spent the past few hours preparing her response, smoothing over any trace of nervousness. Her hands on the bouquet were sweaty. "He was called away for urgent matters, Mother. Royal affairs." Abrielle could barely shake under her mother’s gaze.
Rebecca narrowed her eyes. "Royal affairs." She repeated the words slowly as if tasting something bitter. "How convenient." she scoffed. "What did I say, Pierre?" She drawled.
Pierre stepped forward, placing a firm hand on his wife’s arm before she could launch into another episode. "Rebecca, we’ve travelled a long way. Let’s not start like this."
Rebecca inhaled sharply, forcing herself to stay composed. "Fine," she said, her tone clipped. "But we’ll discuss this later. Although I am starting to think about getting rid of that bast...."
Rebecca snorted her words, Getting cut off by the simultaneous glare of Abrielle and Pierre. How could she talk about killing Cedric in the open air?! "Be mindful of your words dear," Pierre whispered in her ears. His face twisted in disgust.
Abrielle didn’t hate the thought of them wanting to take care of Cedric, but if they got involved, it might cost their lives.
Rebecca drew a long breath to calm herself. Her amber eyes softened slightly as she reached out, cupping Abrielle’s cheek. "You look pale, my love. Have you been eating properly? You should have sent for me the moment you weren’t well." she said Sweetly.
"I’m fine, Mother," Abrielle reassured her with a gentle smile. Her heart melted under the loving gaze of her mother. But Rebecca wasn’t convinced. She could see the exhaustion hidden beneath her daughter’s carefully composed expression.
The queen of the Nightshade family wasn’t one to be fooled. And if Cedric thought he could continue to ignore his wife, he would soon learn otherwise.
Abrielle continued to smile softly and handed her mother a small bouquet of lilies which was Rebecca’s favorite. The delicate white blossoms brightened the cool afternoon light, and for a moment, all of Rebecca’s harsh complaints seemed to fade. She was glad Abrielle remembered just little details.
Rebecca buried her resentment for Cedric for now and focused on her daughter before her. That matter would wait for later.
"Thank you, my dear," Rebecca chimed, her voice softening as she took the flowers. But even as she smiled, her eyes darkened with worry. She pulled Abrielle into a tight hug. "Come here, Abrielle. I need a hug from you right now," she demanded. She has been wishing to do this for months. Cedric had left so abruptly after the wedding that she didn’t get a moment with Abrielle. That insufferable brat.
In their warm embrace, Rebecca pressed close and felt the subtle tremble in her daughter’s arms. It was then that she realized how fragile Abrielle had become, perhaps from all the sorrow and strain of recent days. Her heart ached for her sunshine.
Rebecca’s fierce exterior cracked, and for a few heartbeats, she allowed herself to simply hold her daughter close. "Elle, what happened to you? Your glow is fading." Rebecca muttered just loud enough for the mother-daughter pair to hear.
Abrielle hesitated for a moment before returning the hug, her eyes flickering with a mix of emotions running through her blue eyes. " Nothing you haven’t heard, Mother. Marriage isn’t a bed of roses. Every rose has thorns" she murmured, her words holding meaning that Rebecca understood.
Even her marriage with Pierre wasn’t all rosy; they had their hard times being wedded as complete strangers and struggling with miscarriages for 10 years of their marriage.
Unfortunately, the warmth of their embrace quickly gave way to Rebecca’s familiar sharp tone. "You must take better care of yourself," she scolded gently as she pulled back. Abrielle almost rolled her eyes at Rebecca who was being herself. Nightshade has a residence in the capital but Rebecca insisted on staying at the seaside castle closest to her daughter.
"I know you say Cedric is busy with his royal affairs, but you must not let yourself go. I worry about you every day." she sneered obviously with dislike at the tip of her tongue when she altered Cedric’s name.
Abrielle forced a small smile, nodding as she glanced down at the bouquet in her hands, in the simple tender moment.
Yet even as her mother’s words cut through her, Abrielle could not help but wonder if the quiet whispers about her and Alfonso would reach Rebecca’s ears someday.
She dreaded the thought unbeknownst to her Rebecca had a network of gossiping noble wives who spread news faster than letters.
"Are you not going to give your father a hug Elle?" Pierre chirped in, making Abrielle smile at the man with silver hair and blue eyes, just like Sebastian, known to the Nightshade family. "Of Course, Father. I missed you so much." Abrielle, being a daddy’s girl, embraced her father.
"Not up to how I missed your chatter. The estate got dull without you. I can’t wait for the day you have little Abrielle visit us, filling the halls with their giggles just like their mother." Pierre said softly. He was the only ice that maintained the balance in their family. The man was guilty of spoiling the villainess so much that it was said only royalty could afford to wed her.
