Chapter 222: The in-laws

The seaside Castle was rather busy today. They were expecting guests but not just any type of guests. It was the Duke and Duchess of Vesper, the parents of the mistress of the household.

Time had gone by quickly and Abrielle could not believe it was already over two weeks since Cedric got back to the capital. He was barely around these days with tasks piling up since it was the first month of spring and the spring festival was in just days.

Her parents were due to arrive in the capital today, and she was nervous. She hoped Rebecca didn’t sense anything weird about her during this visit.

Cedric was not around and she had a feeling Rebecca was not going to like that in the slightest bit.

A carriage could be seen approaching the seaside castle from a distance through the wide road that went through the fields that were now green thanks to spring. Wild flowers covered the plains and the withered trees were all green and would soon be fruiting although some already had colourful fruits

The air was filled with the fresh scent of blossoms and wet soil, which was soothing, but a particular mother didn’t care about all the beauty of spring due to her grievances towards her son-in-law. She never liked that bastard, and if not for the fact her sweet Abrielle had threatened to end her life, she would never have agreed to the marriage.

She wondered what spell that bastard put her sweet angel under that turned her into a man-obsessed woman. Rebecca shed silent tears remembering how her daughter was in the past. Now, she was known as a vicious woman, and it was all due to Cedric.

She forgot Abrielle turned out the way she is, having something to do with how she and Pierre spoilt their only daughter.

Rebecca’s voice rose in irritation as the carriage continued clattering along the winding road toward the seaside castle. For the hundredth time, she complained to Pierre about Cedric’s latest misdeed. Pierre had no choice but to listen to her; this was the life he chose.

The poor man shed silent tears for the young man who married his daughter knowing she had a degree in nagging higher than her mother. The older they got the worse it was. He reminded himself again this was the woman he had learnt to love. He dared not move his gaze from her for a second before the anger targeted at Cedric turned to him.

"I swear, Pierre if that bloody Cedric had any decency, he’d have sent word by now. He disappeared without a trace, departing Vesper in the dead of night without even informing us. What kind of son-in-law does that?" She huffed, folding her arms.

Pierre, who had long grown accustomed to his wife’s nagging nature, let out a weary sigh. He had over 30 years of experience with her. "Rebecca, he’s the first prince. He has responsibilities."

Rebecca shot him a glare. Pierre shut his mouth, unable to stand his wife’s glare. Cold sweats form on his forehead. He should have kept his opinion to himself.

"Responsibilities? To whom? Certainly not to my daughter!" She snorted, clenching her fists. How dare Pierre defend that bastard?!

"After everything she’s been through, the least he could do is be there for her. And don’t think I don’t know about those rumours, Pierre. I hear things. The capital is buzzing about Abrielle and Alfonso. The rumours had gotten so bad that I overheard the Ashwood duchess whispering about it while we were there last night. My poor daughter had to sort out the comfort of another man due to her emotionally unavailable one." Rebecca’s voice cracked as she exaggerated, wiping off invisible tears from the corners of her eyes.

Pierre sighed again, rubbing his temples. "You’re overthinking. Alfonso is Cedric’s own half-brother. He was just there for a while. Cedric had to handle his duties." he tried to explain. There was no way he could imagine his beloved Abrielle having an affair.

"That’s precisely why it’s all the more scandalous! You don’t think the court is eating this up?" Rebecca scoffed. "The man leaves his wife alone after she just suffered a miscarriage, and now his half-brother lingers around her? What do you expect people to say? The perfect drama those jobless wives want to hear." Pierre frowned, finding reason in her words.

"Maybe we are just overthinking things. We can just talk to Abrielle." He suggested. Rebecca humphed, turning her gaze to the fields.

"This is Darconia; every heir sees each other as their greatest enemies, Pierre. I should never have consented to this marriage. I always knew Sebastian was a better match. That way, she would never have left home. Even if she didn’t end up with Sebastian we could have just matched her with another young duke." She muttered which didn’t escape Pierre’s hearing.

Pierre had no response to that. The thought troubled him too, though he’d never admit it.

The carriage finally rolled to a stop at the castle’s grand entrance, and the footmen rushed forward to open the door. Rebecca barely waited for them, stepping out with sharp grace. She scoffed as her eyes darted around.

At least the bastard was rich enough to take care of her daughter. She was irritated, but that feeling vanished as soon as her eyes fell on the slender figure who looked a bit frail, standing at the entrance with a bouquet of lilies, her favourite.

Abrielle stood dutifully at the main entrance, waiting to greet them. The sight of her daughter, her only child, with the same cascade of ginger hair that Rebecca once had in her youth, made her breath hitch. For a brief moment, all her anger melted away.

Abrielle was smiling so sweetly at Rebecca all she wanted was to hug her and pull those cheeks that were red with life. How her baby has grown into a stunning lady. Pride swelled in her heart.
