Chapter 212: Still lies

They were close, very close she could feel the heat leaving his skin. She was in her nightmare. A very light cotton dress that didn’t seem like enough barricade between them.

"Pardon me, I think I missed something." She said, still unable to believe Cedric Von Drakkar apologized to her of his own free will.

Cedric’s hold around her waist relaxed a bit. It was harder saying it the second time. He didn’t know the last time he apologized to someone. He had a faint memory of the day he begged Eleanor to stop the servants from whipping the day she tried to scar his face because of Astrid.

He had begged in the distant past to survive but his cries were never heard. The word sorry was something truly foreign to him. "I am sorry for not being able to protect you as your husband. I failed in my duty to you." He replied

Abrielle was left speechless, it was harder to believe than the first time. He was truly apologizing to her. But why? His ego could never let him do that.

"It is fine, I was the one who put myself in that situation." She tried to push the matter aside, finding it weird.

"No, it wasn’t. I failed, and you ended up getting hurt. I heard you were weighed down after hearing the news of the damage done and it did put me into a lot of thoughts. You don’t have to feel pressured by it, I will try to understand and be patient." He wasn’t good with words, he hoped she understood what he meant.

"Cedric, it’s enough," she tried to stop him. She didn’t want to listen. She didn’t want to see or imagine this part of him that seemed like he cared. Her eyes stung, his embrace didn’t seem as terrifying as it was earlier. It gave her a faint warmth she didn’t want to receive from him, although a part of her secretly craved this warmth.

She needed this because she was falling apart. She needed someone to hold her together, but unfortunately, that person couldn’t be the one pulling her apart.

"It isn’t, I am sorry the letters didn’t get to you. He said you were looking forward to the letter, but it never came. I wrote to you twice but never got a reply and didn’t understand why. It made me upset." Cedric stopped for a while. The room fell silent once again. Time ticked by for a few seconds.

"You don’t have to find anything sought of comfort in him. I don’t care about the rumours but I do care about you." Her hand clutched her dress, finding everything he said hard to believe.

There was no reason for Cedric to lie, he wrote to her. He was too proud of that, but it seemed too good to be true. "Who else did you write to?" She asked.

"Kaiden, I sent word to him twice when I arrived and after everything was done. He got the letter but it is confusing why you never got the ones I sent to you."

He didn’t mention the letter he sent to Callista. Abrielle wiggled in his embrace, she turned around to stare back at his gold eyes. Hoping to read through his gaze.

"What about Callista?" She asked him. Cedric’s gaze dulled. "Callista, what brings her into this conversation?" He asked her; he was honestly lost as to why Callista was being mentioned. He wondered if it was Abrielle’s secret rivalry against the priest.

He never understood why she felt insecure about a priest. "Did you write to Callista?" Her question confused her further.

"Why would I write to Callista? She isn’t my family and I don’t really consider her a close acquaintance. Are you jealous of Callista?" He asked Abrielle who was now stunned. Callista received a letter from Cedric just like the plot, or was there a mix-up somewhere?

Cedric panicked seeing her look of confusion. He worried she misunderstood him. He tilted her chin making sure she held his gaze. "There is no need to be jealous of her. I know I spend a lot of time with her but it is for the investigation. Callista is a good companion and has made the investigation a whole lot easier, but if you want me to withdraw from the investigation, I will write to the king."

Abrielle felt like laughing. It felt all like lies; she knew what she saw that day at the castle. He had gotten to the point of lying to her to hide his growing obsession.

"Is that what you want? It is not about what I want, Cedric. Honestly, I find it hard to believe that you haven’t fallen for her. She is pretty, smart and talented and not the clumsy fool you are married to. If I were you, I would also love her, considering how much time you spend together." For the first time, she said what was on her mind. His hold loosened, and he was left speechless by her accusations.

"You accuse me of having an affair with Alfonso but I have never spoken of the fact you have chosen her over me. It is fine you don’t have to spout lies. I will respect your decisions." She added, her fingers were curled into a fist. A sad smile hung on her lips. It was crazy that she was this brave when he was holding her and could easily end her.

She was playing with fire. "What made you think I chose her over you? You act like you don’t care or hold affection for me but yet you come up with baseless accusations. I thought you said you were here to talk and not fight." His words ticked her off. She tried to pull his arms apart but he didn’t bulge.

"Cedric you wrote to Callista. She received your letter and yet you deny it. Callista even approached me herself." She snapped at Cedric. He was stunned by her tone and her words.

"I wrote to Callista," he repeated. What was going on here because Cedric didn’t seem to understand?

Abrielle was more irritated. He still refused to accept it.
