Chapter 179: You never loved me

It was one dramatic winter prayer. The royal family came to pray for the kingdom, but with the amount of tragedy they faced during the period, they needed prayer themselves.

Eleanor and Callista were gravely injured. Lucian also had a couple of injuries, but it was mainly exhaustion he suffered from.

While praises of how a brave foreign priestess rescued the queen travelled around the temple, another rumour was secretly spreading, one that Abrielle was not shocked to find out about.

In summary, Kaiden’s hands are filled. "The rumours said she spent 2 nights with him in a cave, and when a physician checked her, it was confirmed she was no longer pure." Soft whispers for a group of gossip snuck into the ears of our dear villainess.

It was noon, and the main temple auditorium was technical with only a few around who were offering prayers to the goddess Nyxoria. Abrielle was kneeling before the altar with her head bowed and eyes closed offering her prayers.

She was not praying for herself because she doubted Nyxoria could help her but came here out of obligation just to show a front that she cared about her duties to the kingdom.

Her mind filled with a lot of thoughts from her family on earth and even here. Being her sucked, she was distracted by the interesting gossip from two noble ladies dressed rather expensive. She recognized one as a countess based in the capital. They were gossiping about Ophelia.

Just like the plot Ophelia and Ryker had an entanglement while stuck in the forest. "I can’t believe a princess can be that cheap. I wonder what Her Highness Lady Marinette is teaching her daughter." The countess scoffed.

The funny part was that these ladies were kneeling at the altar while gossiping. "Hush, be careful before it gets to their ears. The royal family has a lot going on: first, the first prince’s wife having a miscarriage on sacred land, Queen Eleanor attempted assassination, then this." The other lady cautions the countess.

Abrielle’s eyes twitched, why was her miscarriage being dragged into the topic? Come on they should give her a break. "The miscarriage is such a shame. Princess Abrielle is such a pretty lady. Rumours had it she was originally meant to be betrothed to his Holiness Sebastian but she chose the one who no one talks about." The countess chimed in. Cousin marriage was a norm here, especially among high birth, to keep the lineage pure.

Abrielle was surprised her proposed arranged marriage to Sebastian was common knowledge. "They would have been a beautiful couple, but it doesn’t matter. His holiness is still next in line for the duchy title unless Prince Cedric decides to let go of his surname, Von Drakkar, to take Abrielle’s own, will the succession move to her." The gossip mongers continued shifting the topic to her.

Abrielle was not comfortable and wondered if they didn’t recognize her at all. "At least this year is more interesting than last year; I wonder what will happen next, maybe a wedding." The countess chuckled. She had no idea.

"The sanctuary of the goddess isn’t a place to gossip, these are trying times." A sharp voice cautioned the stunned ladies.

"Your Holiness," they gasped, surprised; the high priest caught them gossiping about his family. They quickly apologized to Sebastian and fled the scene.

Abrielle almost broke into a laugh but she held herself and continued pretending to pray. The sound of a soft laugh took her unaware, and she was forced to look towards Sebastian, who was smiling at her side.

"What is so funny? You interrupted my prayer." Abrielle pouted. Sebastian’s smile only grew wider, "it was only a matter of time before you laughed out. You are still bad at pretending, Abrielle." Sebastian chimed in.

Abrielle nervously laughed, getting on her feet, "I guess it is hard to hide from your eyes," she blurted, dusting off the invisible specs of dirt on her dress that was green in colour.

"Not really, I just know you well enough to know my dear cousin was not fond of praying. Remember, you got into trouble a lot because of it; Uncle suggested you focus on being a noble lady rather than being associated with the temple." Sebastian recalled. His eyes glimmered when he remembered their childhood.

"That was long ago. I am now a princess whose duty is to offer my prayers, and I wanted to pray for my mother and father. It’s been months already." Abrielle explained, she did have Abrielle’s parents in her heart and mind because not only did she have the previous host’s memories but also her feelings, which were messing with her.

Abrielle thought that was why she was a bit hesitant to kill Cedric because the original Abrielle loved him, and that aside, she missed her real father. Hazel’s family, they were so far away with no chance of ever seeing them again.

"If you miss them you should write to them." Sebastian suggested, ’ How nice it would have been if I could also write to my other family, but it was impossible?’ Abrielle sighed at the thought.

"They are visiting the capital in Lunaria for the spring festival. I did send a letter saying how much I look forward to their visit." Abrielle replied. Lunaria was earth equivalent to February.

Sebastian nodded at her answer. "By the way how have things been? Any clue about the cause of the fire." Abrielle asked Sebastian.

Sebastian sighed, thinking about the workload. It has been one hell of a winter prayer. "No clue yet, but thankfully, the queen is recovering well. That aside, I have to prepare for a wedding between Princess Ophelia and Prince Ryker of Galvai." Sebastian answered.

"Cedric was also of great help. I guess he isn’t that bad but I still don’t think he is a perfect match." Sebastian added his honest opinion.

Abrielle’s eyes narrowed at him, "Do you think you would have been a perfect match?" Her question pushed him off balance. The priest was not expecting it. He nervously scratched his hair. "That is not what I think. I was not a perfect match you never loved me that way and only saw me as a big brother. The thing is that Cedric is complicated."

"How do you see me, Sebastian?" She asked, making the priest more uncomfortable. There was a fleeting look in his eyes that quickly disappeared.
