Chapter 145: Welcoming banquet
Chapter 145: Welcoming banquet
There was an artificial food shortage, according to how Cedric would describe it. This was due to the season and the sorcerers; while investigating the sorcerers, a plague that had been ravaging some parts of the kingdom that majorly dealt with farming towns was linked to their stored food.
The food was contaminated, making it unfit to consume. Left with no choice, tons of dried grains were destroyed in the middle of winter.
The food shortage was getting serious and there was an expected hike in the price of the available ones. This would obviously cause a serious problem, so to solve it, the king decided to import from a neighbouring kingdom.
Diplomats from the Kingdom were invited to the palace, and a welcoming feast hosted by the royal Family was organized. Abrielle had no choice but to be present.
In the original plot, this also happened, only that it wasn’t this early, but after the winter prayers, despite the slight change in the event, Abrielle knew it was going to be a hell of a banquet, and she really didn’t want to be at the palace.
Her carriage arrived at the main entrance of the Silver Crescent palace and the door was pulled open. Evelyn gave her hand to the princess to slowly alight the carriage. Abrielle was wearing a green dress which had some intricate gold designs along the hems.
It was deliberately chosen to match Cedric’s outfit. From outside the palace was rather Vibrant and she knew the banquet was about to start.
She was led inside the palace heading for the grande dining room. It was a bit sarcastic that a grand feast was going to be held to invite diplomats for negotiations to solve an impending food crisis.
"Abrielle," she heard someone call out for her; it was her least-liked brother-in-law. Alfonso approached Abrielle with a bright smile; it was hard to even imagine that what happened earlier was true. He was looking rather dashing, with his hair nearly combined and he was wearing a red outfit.
"Alfonso," Abrielle chimed with a forced smile; why did she always run into him whenever she was visiting the palace for an event? He took Abrielle’s hand and placed a soft kiss on it. She didn’t necessarily feel his lips on her skin because of the gloves she had on. "You look as stunning as ever, I really do wish I was Cedric each time I see you," Alfonso said sweetly, like a seasoned playboy.
Evelyn had to step back to give the members of the royal family some privacy. "You don’t have to act so sweet; I won’t tell anyone of the incident that happened earlier." Abrielle chirped in a low voice. A soft smile was on Alfonso’s lips.
" That isn’t the reason I complimented you. I am not scared of Duchess Elizabeth; the truth is we did have a past, but I don’t have anything to do with her, especially now I have found true love, but then again, my faith is always challenging."
"True love, so who is this true love you speak of? Your mistresses will all be mad to hear that." Abrielle teased him, unable to believe his words. Alfonso was a playboy till the end when he died.
"Why do I have a feeling you don’t believe me?" Alfonso asked, narrowing his eyes at her. Would it be crazy to say among all the members of the royal family, he was the one that Abrielle had the least problems with, including Cedric, despite what happened at the winter hunt?
Either way, it was still early to judge, but at least Alfonso was the last person who might kill her. "I don’t believe you in the least way." Abrielle Frankly said.
"Ouch that hurts a bit, but I am being serious about changing. As a matter of fact, the person I am in love with is someone you know." Alfonso said with a serious expression that only made him look funny.
A smile graced Abrielle’s lips; she didn’t believe his rubbish in the least. His little chit-chat was indeed helping her manage her nervousness. "Let me guess, you will say I am the one, but unfortunately, I am married to Cedric." She teased, it was purely a joke. She giggled softly. Her voice was really melodic with her eyes sparkling.
"What if I say I am really in love with my brother’s wife?" He asked and she almost choked on her spit. She laughed louder, it was truly ridiculous. Did he think she would believe his lies? The only reason he might be the least interested in her is to get information about Cedric.
"Please tell a better joke; I would believe it better if you had mentioned a random noble lady from the capital." Abrielle chuckled; Alfonso scoffed, rolling his eyes.
"It isn’t a joke, Didn’t I tell you of my intentions long ago?." He deadpanned, making Abrielle’s feet stop moving. She narrowed her eyes at him. "Did you hit your head against something? Stop saying crazy things like that someone might overhear and misinterpret. You don’t have to go this extra way to make me seal my lips."
Alfonso’s lips parted. He was about to probably say something cheesy, but his eyes seemed to have spotted something. His expression turned neutral. "I will appreciate that, Abrielle. I guess we have to talk some other time." He suddenly said,
Abrielle was puzzled by his sudden change of countenance, Alfonso was never the type to easily give up. Alfonso walked past her, her eyes following him. As she turned around, she found herself hitting her face against something hard, followed by a strong scent of sandalwood and Vanilla.
A familiar scent that was etched in her memory. An arm wrapped her waist before she could move away. She suddenly had this strange fuzzy feeling with her heart beating sporadically. "I heard you arrived earlier and wondered what was taking you so long I didn’t know you were having a buddy chat with Alfonso." His low baritone chimed.
