Chapter 116: Astrid did it

The maid was dead; the shock Abrielle felt from the news terrified her completely, with her face going pale. The queen studied Abrielle’s reaction. She trusted her judgement, and she had someone she suspected, but she wanted to hear what the princess thought.

"That is unexpected, how were they able to infiltrate the castle?" She gasped, as beads of sweat formed on her forehead.

"It’s a suspicion she was assassinated. Some claimed she might have committed suicide, but the bottom line is that she is dead, and there is no strong lead to who gave her poison." The queen explained Abrielle’s hold clenched around the cup. She was scared of saying the person she suspected before there would be one more person who wanted her dead.

"That is really unfortunate, your highness." The princess mentioned, and then they both went silent, their minds filled with several thoughts.

"The person that sent her was at the tea party. Isn’t that the case?" Eleanor stated drawing Abrielle’s attention from her tea cup to stare at the Queen’s grey eyes. She brought the cup close to her lips, the rich aroma of the tea waffled into her nostrils as she took a sip.

The hot liquid made her throat feel parched as she swallowed. It would be hard lying to the queen. Why did the system want her to be entangled with such a dangerous person?

"If my suspicion is true, the person was also at the tea party, but it is just a hunch." She emphasized the fact, that she didn’t want to be entangled in any conflicts

"Just as I Suspected. Karissa that witch. She was the one that did it with the way she was defending the maid." The queen stated her assumptions. Karissa was indeed the person in the original plot that planned everything but Abrielle discovered something yesterday that wasn’t too shocking.

"I was also suspicious of Karissa but I don’t think she is the one. At times the obvious answer is wrong." This left the queen puzzled. She tried to think of another person, but that was all she could think about.

"How is that possible? She openly wanted to defend the maid." That was a fact that made Karissa a suspect. She was supporting the maid; maybe she did it out of spite for Cedric, but this time around, she was innocent.

"Karissa was not the only one who supported the maid. Even Callista’s actions are suspicious, but she is innocent. I rather not say who I think it is because you will not believe me in the first place." Abrielle pointed out the way Callista behaved.

Abrielle felt Callista was just disoriented or scared by the sudden attention placed on her, but one thing was certain: she didn’t like the female lead for so many reasons.

"It can’t be Callista. She had no reason to kill me, and neither does she have access to my personal maid." That was a fact that cleared Callista from suspicion. Abrielle then asked Eleanore a very tricky question.

"Among everyone there, who do you think has the closest contact to your personal maids, someone in which she going to visit the maid would not raise any brows?" The suspect Abrielle had in mind was a bit sketchy, she wanted Eleanor to realize everything herself.

The Queen’s brows pulled together in a knot as she tried to piece everything together. After thinking for a while, the teacup in her hand slipped to the floor. The ceramic shattered on the floor, alerting the maids, who came rushing, but Abrielle stopped them.

"Please stay out, the queen and I have something private we are talking about." She sent them out immediately. The maids were hesitant, but they listened to the princess in the end.

Eleanor had started to tremble her face going pale as the realization started to sink into her. "It can’t be possible, why?" She muttered.

"I guess you have realized the answer now. She hid her intentions perfectly well, and guess what? The tea wasn’t poisoned, but the tea set." Abrielle chimed. The queen shook her head, she was already informed that it was the cup that was poisoned. Everything was targeted towards her and Abrielle who would have gotten complicated in everything.

"I know but why would my daughter want me dead? Astrid can’t do that, what does she have to gain from it."

"Maybe it is a personal vendetta. Have you offended her before that made her angry and targeted me? Also, yesterday was the first time I met the princess. Astrid was the only one who could have pulled it perfectly; if my suspicion was right, she would have hidden the poison in Karissa’s place. Karissa might not be queen but being accused of what she didn’t do would attract the anger of her kingdom." Abrielle analysed everything for the queen. She has spotted Astrid’s strange behaviour.

Her reasons were simple: Astrid hated her mother for marrying her off to her husband and making her crush hate her. Cedric was in the middle of this. Abrielle was Cedric’s wife, and Eleanor was the person who wanted Cedric dead and sent him to war after discovering Astrid’s feelings for her stepbrother.

Eleanor was still in love with Cedric and hated the fact he was married to Abrielle; she wanted to sabotage Abrielle, and also make her mother suffer in the process. Eleanor also knew this, her jaw clenched as a fire started to burn in her gaze.

"This is all his fault. He wants to ruin my life," she swore, then her gaze locked with Abrielle. She might be able to get Astrid punished, but that didn’t mean that she could not go after Cedric.

"How has marriage been? I heard you tried to flee." The queen mentioned and a butter taste found its way to her mouth. She had a bad feeling about this.

"I rather not answer that."

"You have a sharp mind, Abrielle, and it seems we both have the same enemy. Have you ever considered getting rid of the devil that haunts you? I would love to work with you." The queen was suggesting something dangerous.
